While it can't be worse than Discord, it does seem a bit hard to trust. A closed source application that's way more polished than any alternative and doesn't cost anything, suggests to me that someone with a secondary motivation invested money to make it.

I've set up a small server with it, it's nowhere near as easy to use or as pretty as (((Discord))), but that's the price to pay for privacy and security I guess.

There's also encryption options, but it basically says that once you enable encryption you can't disable it ever again, and it might fuck up while encrypting and break everything you've set up so far, so I just leave it off.

Riot is okay but a little shady, you should self-host a matrix server if you want to use it. Disable federation so you don't connect to the main servers as well and you're more or less good to go.

Riot does take the hostname of whatever server you're connecting to by default and analytics is opt-out. I want an alternative client but everything else is too half-baked.

There is a google api on the website because the theme includes space for links to social media at the bottom. That is only on the website. The chat page and chatroom contain nothing of the sort.

They also installed google re-captcha for registration (and presumably sign in) which will prevent the majority of anonymous registrants (some will get lucky, but I had no success). Note that there are other captcha services that are open source, but they chose google. They seem to fundamentally misunderstand what opsec is.
