>SD/SDHC/SDXC memory cards have a "Protected Area" on the card for the SD standard's security function; a standard formatter may erase it, causing problems if security is used. The SD Association provides freely-downloadable SD Formatter software to overcome these problems for Windows and Mac OS X.[112] The SD Formatter does not format the "Protected Area", and the Association recommends the use of appropriate application software or SD-compatible device that provides SD security function to format the "Protected Area" in the memory card.

sd cards are botnet and have DRM

do you know how to remove it?

https://www.bunniestudios.com/blog/?p=3554

they also have a microcontroller inside. sd cards are not innocent "tapes" to store data

 No.986691>>986698

so fucking what, it's not as if they are capable of actually giving the information to (((third parties)))

>inb4 muh cellular antenna inside sd card

The micro is for wear leveling, filtering out bad blocks to provide a nice abstraction to the OS. Your HDD or SSD also has a controller on it too anon

I'd be more worried about the microcontroller in your SIM card with an external connection and DMA, which runs Java(card).

Hard Disc Drives also have separate controller boards and their own firmware, you fucking queer

they could hack your operating system and use it to send anything

or store some metadata, information about your PC

how do you know it's only for this purpose?

>Your HDD or SSD also has a controller on it too anon

yes, those are botnets too

>I'd be more worried about the microcontroller in your SIM card with an external connection and DMA, which runs Java(card).

SD card readers could provide DMA to the chip

This is a fairly dumb line of thought.

Did you know, any modern computer is full of micros? Your display has a controller (that has DMA), your ethernet jack is backed by a controller, the battery in your laptop has a controller, your keyboard/trackpad have controller etc.

There are legitimate reasons for this. If all of these devices did not have controllers, the CPU would have to manage everything itself, at a huge performance cost. Instead, these tasks are delegated to their own, purpose built devices, and the CPU can continue to do its calculations at high speed. DMA is absolutely required for performance, as the alternative is clearing every data transfer through another processor.

If you think SD cards, HDD/SSD controllers etc. are botnet, then you think everything is botnet (which it is). Just don't use computers any more anon, think about how free you'd be.

Also cars are full of microcontrollers with proprietary firmware, designed to be non-user serviceable. I wouldn't own/drive/ride a car if I were you. So are buses, planes, and motorbikes. Pretty much the only non-botnet vehicles are bicycles and horses.

What's the point of this thread?

 No.986708

>>986689 (OP)

Don't forget the failure mode for SD cards is to shut off any write capabilities whatsoever.

>lol microontrollers are botnet

Unless you're using optical media or using drives with removable platters, your storage device is always going to contain microcontrollers. They're necessary for the drives to do anything.

microcontroller is one thing, but what about Protected Area? there is small area on card that contains hidden data and you are not allowed to erase it

>>986705

there are motorbikes that contain zero microcontrollers

maybe also some old cars

Wear backup wasnt present in magnetic hdds, those sectors were just marked as bad and thats it, what the point here of doing it.

 No.986765

>>986698

>they could hack your operating system

If they do that, they don't need special hardware to see your data, they're already in.

And no, hacking via a tiny piece of hardware in the SD card is not likely, I/O devices are pretty robust in that regard.

>yes, those are botnets too

Ah, so you're a dumbass, my mistake.

>>986733

>but what about Protected Area?

According to the specs, one of its functions is marking the card as read only, also generic formatters can easily erase it because the card host can read and write to the protected area without restrictions.

So it's crappy DRM.

>>986735

>Wear backup wasnt present in magnetic hdds

Different kinds of tech work differently, what a surprise.

If you don't do wear levelling on solid state storage you get bad sectors much earlier, it's like how having poor head management on a HDD will kill the drive much eariler.
