Testing is a huge help to developers. Finding and reporting bugs, and then applying/testing the newest builds for fixes is always sorely needed. It also gets you talking with the core team and building credibility.

Honestly? Assume all projects are chronically understaffed and underfunded. You probably use several programs right now that could use some additional help. Check out their bug boards and discussion channels.
