That's... actually pretty fucking easy. I did harder things the first day of my second year, like implementing a stack using only closures because the teacher didn't let us use arrays for that exercise. Got it in a few minutes and it wasn't even hard despite not having ever worked with closures before. Then again it wasn't what the teacher was asking for, but I was really looking to flap my e-dick around. And I studied a fucking webdev trade

>Unfortunately on the midterm instead of writing the password I just wrote the CVE number and the fact that it was vulnerable

If I would have used Dirty Cow there is a good chance I would have crashed the dev server. On the same topic, the teacher made his own system for doing daily assignments (a small challenge that was run against unit tests for a grade) and he uploaded the code to the internet. Upon cloning it to my computer, I noticed that logs for people's grades were still in the repository, they were just deleted. I did figure out the right command to actually delete the previously committed grades, but I was too lazy to tell him. Additionally posting students grades is breaking some law I'm pretty sure.

Assuming you're a fellow burger, this is just the way it is. Everyone goes into debt at some point, and yes, it sucks, but the best thing you can do is find a payment plan that works for you and stick to it. Missing payments is the worst thing that can happen to you, so make sure you can pay everything off as quickly as possible.

Get a job, no matter how shit it is. If it pays, take it. Spend your money wisely, apply for neetbux if you have to (just fake hardcore assburgers, you'll get it), and you'll be good.

No matter how many classes I attend at Uni, I just can't find anyone who actually cares about the subject we are learning (except the few autists in the class) No one has any sort of passion or interest in tech, they all are just niggercattle who memorize bunch of stuff to pass the tests (instead of actually learning the subject and learning how to apply their knowledge) Everyone just keeps talking about their normalnigger parties. Out of 90% of students studying CS or CE, only like 10% or 5% actually even try to understand the subject, others just copypaste from Stack Overflow. I know this is obvious for the /tech/ students, but please, please, don't waste your time playing vidya and doing fuck-all during the 4~6 years of college/university.

It's only partially about what you're taught, even specially when you consider that sometimes, besides fundamentals, what you're being taught is just wrong/obsolete (e.g. read the thread).

It's also about meeting other [competent] people, studying about things that interest you, and applying that into interesting projects.

If you see the process as some kind of conveyor belt in which you're passively moved from beginning to end without any of your input, then you're doing things wrong! And you'll regret it later, specially if you're getting into debt for it.

>>984725

>>984781

>Out of 90% of students studying CS or CE, only like 10% or 5% actually even try to understand the subject

It's becoming more common as CS becomes a literal meme. As time passes though, most of the 95% either become serious or end dropping out.

If you're an introvert, or just socially inept, then don't bother trying to make friends of everyone. Focus on that 5~10% that actually give a shit instead.

I would still argue that learning to deal with people different than you is a valuable skill, and that it can be learnt. Carnegie is often a good starter.

>I can't seem to find anyone with whom I could talk about /tech/ or animu or anything else.

I met a guy who could only talk about anime. His powerlevel was much higher than mine (pleb taste, though) and he was also stunted when making new friends. But he lacked self-awareness and wore anime related stuff publicly (many pins, some naruto gear, a fuckload of anime keychains in his backpack... "programming" gloves, etc) so I started talking to him when I recognized one of those anime and asked about it. Then we became good friends as we started working in group projects together.

What I get from that, is that you either approach other people or make yourself approachable. I guess that if you care about programming, then maybe become good at it? If there's any programming contest or tech club or whatever... join it? I really don't know, I'm not the one who waits.

>So, /tech/, how did you [did] find friends in uni?

I talk to people who I find interesting; if there's a group project coming I suggest we work together, that's the easiest way. You get to know if they're flakes, which is a nice bonus. You don't want to associate with flakes too much, maybe it's fun, but often it's a waste of time.

When talking to someone, often you're able to glance some of their interests: ask about them. Pretty much anyone likes talking about the things they like, as long as they feel they won't get judged harshly for it. If you're generally cultured, then you'll find some points in the conversation where you can relate in some or other way. Just don't make it a one-upping contest, it serves to prevent the conversation from becoming an interrogation.

Also, most people are grateful that someone is trying to talk with them, and they'll cut you some slack when you do so. Specially in a place where they don't know other people (or only know a few), e.g. during semester starts.

Finally, if you're really desperate, then playing team based videogames is often an easy way of making ""friends"". As I implied earlier though, the people who waste too much time in videogames often aren't worth it. And it's very easy to get addicted to it. And botnet.

>I have been trying to be more interesting but, so far, it hasn't worked.

I didn't mean to suggest that you (or anyone) should aim "to be more interesting", not at all.

What does that even mean anyways? Different people look for different things in other people and in their relationships with them.

What's "interesting" to some turbonormie may seem unbelievably vapid to you, and viceversa. Likewise, some people just expect to get some laughs out of friendship, while others also expect emotional support, and some others also expect to grow together with their friends (aka "flying with the eagles").

I'll also state the obvious here: nobody gives a fuck whether you get good grades beyond to know if they can ask you for help or not (this doesn't mean that you should just give yourself to academic mediocrity though).

>I want to improve myself and my situation so there is still some hope for me

Then you'll follow the advice that's already given to you. I believe the most important one is to take initiative more often. As said, group projects are often a good excuse if you're too self-conscious. And nobody is saying that you have to limit yourself to interacting with your classmates, or even only with people with the same major.

I do have an issue with "caring too much" though: it's probably pointless.

That's because your real focus should be placed in yourself, working in your projects, and eventually in accomplishing your goals. Not in getting some dumb niggers to like you. You may call it the Law of Attraction, The Baader-Meinhof Phenomenon, or whatever. But one thing is true: when you really apply yourself to some goal, people and opportunities come to you. Or were they always there and just now you notice them?

>I feel that people see me as their last resort. Ugh, I am starting to sound more and more like a soon-to-be Supreme Gentleman

Reading this thread, people here are surprisingly normal. Most of my issues in college were because of the teachers, and because of my own inability to survive in that kind of environment. Other students for the most part at least weren't as intolerable as they could have been, but they made a lot of noise so it was difficult to concentrate, and I never talked to them at all. I also always sit right in front of the teacher, so I didn't have to see them, and didn't have a bunch of people around me (that causes deadly levels of anxiety, so I always make sure that everyone is behind me, because then the noise comes all from one direction, I don't have to see people, and it's easier to enter and leave the classroom). I just tried to be invisible, that's what I always wanted, and I was pretty good at it. Also, communist indoctrination and propaganda were an issue, but the most major problem is that I am incapable of doing things that make no sense, and that the teachers were intolerable and incompetent. If you tell me to write about programming instead of actually programming, or to learn shit that I know for a fact is useless, I just can't do it. If I can tell that a teacher has no idea what they are talking about, I have a hard time taking their retarded orders seriously. They are so useless that they even make students do their fucking job. Dumbest people that I have ever had to deal with. Something that the Americans here may find amusing is that a teacher of mine, that was in her 60s, thought and probably still thinks to this day that Alaska is actually a country. That was a fun one to remember, at least.

Anyway, they teach so much that you have no use for and make you do so much dumb shit that it's even detrimental to the subjects that actually matter, since you have to spend so much energy essentially juggling turds for their amusement. Also, I refused to do anything that involved any social interaction. I tried, but it's impossible. Also, the lack of focus doesn't help either. Education is all over the place, there is no actual structure, and that destroys people that go there with actual interests and goals in mind, and people that need a solid, consistent routine to function. Overall, the way that the entire system works is completely incompatible with how my mind works. Being there caused me so much stress that I would frequently freeze and become unable to do anything for months. I have never been as depressed as I was back then. I couldn't stand being there, it was killing me.

I dropped out of college in 2011, tried a few other things, and after years of complete failure I gave up on life so I don't have those problems anymore. Basically, if you want to be like me, just be born cripplingly autistic, get a shitload of emotional abuse from your family without even properly understanding what is going on until much later, be rejected by everyone around you for most of your life, fail to achieve all of your goals, fail to adapt to human life and society, and then give up and never leave your room again. It's pretty nice, actually, except when I start feeling alone, but I avoid that as much as possible, and this drinking tends to solve this problem. I learn a lot more just for fun than I ever did in school, though I was always a pretty decent student overall anyway unless the teacher was so bad that I couldn't even show up. I was even the best, when I was interested enough to actually study.

>If you could go back in time, is there any advice you would give to your family/friends to help you growing up (assuming they wanted you to have a better life)?

Maybe getting diagnosed early on. Still, the problem is that even that could make things worse because they are stupid (actual low intelligence) and crazy (actual insanity). Because of that, I would never have been professionally diagnosed if I didn't take the initiative, as an adult, after finally figuring out what was going on. Basically, nothing that I said had any effect, it's like talking to a bunch of brick walls, so I had to go to a therapist, and then the therapist explained everything. They still don't get it, of course, but now they kinda accept it so I just stay away from them. Talking to them is pointless, about anything. It feels like talking to inanimate objects, like they lack the capacity to really understand anything, and they don't remember anything either. I get this impression from dumb people in general that have no knowledge of anything and no curiosity at all, and eventually lose the ability to learn. If there is a reaction, then it will inevitably be a negative one. Other than that and "don't have children, ever", there's nothing I could really say.

I would definitely not tell my dad to not kick my mom while she was pregnant (I could tell him to kick harder, though) because then I could have been more likely to end up like her or the rest of her side of the family, and she deserved it anyway. She jumped from relationship from relationship and was always the supposed victim of violence when clearly she's the one that starts it every time (the fact that she got a broken finger once is an example of that, you only break your finger in a fight is you are on the offensive and the other person is on the defense, otherwise it's not all that believable). I don't really have any complaints about him. She divorced him, but he always treated me pretty well. We were definitely incompatible, though, and never really connected. It took me two decades to really understand what this family thing is and why people care about it when there's no particular reason to care about people just because they are related to you. By that point he had already been completely paralyzed and crippled by a traffic accident for a long time, pretty damn incoherent as well, and I hadn't seen him in quite a few years because I had no idea how to deal with that and interact with someone in that situation. He was already dead when I talked to the therapist, so he will never know. Still, that was a good kick as far as I'm concerned. It's not like I hate myself. Maybe there was some brain damage there that made me less stupid, or maybe it didn't do anything. Their insane relationship overall may have been the cause of the autism and of some weird things about my body. Still, if anything, being normal is the real problem. I don't mind being weird as long as I can get away with it. It doesn't seem to hinder my actual ability to communicate too much, though, fortunately. Probably because I was obsessed with language for a while, and I am a compulsive writer. Ended up accidentally learning English by myself as well, but my actual communication skills were horrendous until I was almost 17.

>>987497

Keep in mind that college can definitely make you hate anything no matter how much you like it now. I chose Computer Engineering, even though my interest at the time was programming (an interest that I lost for a long time because I ended up associating it with college and with complete and utter depression). It was the wrong choice, the correct would for me would have been to avoid college like the plague, but do what you want to. Anyway, start learning now and it should be easier to choose. And you should get used to that because teachers are creatures made of pure shit that wear meat suits and merely convince you that they are human when they are actually not. They can just decide not to teach anything and it's perfectly fine. They can even force their students to do all the teaching. Or just do a really bad job, because those that can't do teach. Education naturally attracts incompetence.

Well, I never said anything about everyone else, though I do have the lowest possible opinion of humanity. I was talking about dumb people. When you talk to a legitimately stupid person, it feels like you're talking to a wall, like they are barely hearing what you say. People that you can talk to about almost anything and they will never know what you're talking about. Basically talking about the stupidest people I have ever seen in my life. People in my family, and a couple of teachers (not even most teachers are on that level), most of them women. My grandmother asked before about what the hell the sky is, and what is behind it, why it's blue and what is up with that black thing when it's night time, in her fucking 60s, and she's not uneducated. I had a massive amount of issues with her because she always believed in insane superstitious bullshit (she even called everything that I drew demonic when I was a kid and made me destroy a few things) that I didn't understand at all as a kid, and would attack me for it, and everything was an excuse to say that I was a piece of shit like my dad and threaten to kick me out. Her sister, until her 20s, thought that we live on the inside of a hollow planet (I would like to hear her younger self explain how exactly the sun works, that would be fun). My grandfather used computers since the mid 90s and to this day he doesn't know how to minimize, maximize and resize windows, and other basic window manager shit. My mother has used computers since before she was 20 and only learned how to use a search engine when I explained to her, when she was already in her 40s, and her browser was always 50% toolbars. She also basically believes she's a witch (I don't know much about that, and don't want to know), is a compulsive liar, and everything bad that happens is a curse. She lost her keys once and ended up screaming that the keys disappeared because her ex cursed her. All of these people are emotionally out of control as well. Because of this shit, I became incredibly paranoid and didn't let them see anything that I did. When I was watching TV and showed up, I would change channels. When I was using the computer and they showed up, I would close everything no matter what it was. I still have issues with this sort of thing to this day. My door has to always be locked. When I wasn't allowed to lock it, I would look behind me so much that I hurt my neck and it become a recurring issue for many years. I feel very uncomfortable doing anything around anyone else to this day. And these are educated people that went to college and made and shitload of money (and wasted all of it, naturally), but their brains are rotten from lack of use, and they have no real curiosity about anything. Still, they think they know about everything and will argue with people that have dedicated their entire lives to learn about what they are talking about while they haven't even read about the subject once. Maybe they have heard some dumb shit on TV or "seen X in a movie once", but that's the extent of their knowledge if you can call it that. Also, all of them use cellphones now, and it's absolutely intolerable. And they think it's too hard as well. Struggle a lot to use technology specifically made for retards. Do you need more examples? Should I mention their morality as well? Or maybe this is all defensible? It's certainly off-topic, and I should definitely sleep because I have been an insomniac mess lately. Regardless, if I'm the monster here, I can only assume that being one can't be too bad considering that I have never done anything even remotely as bad as what people do on a daily basis without even thinking about it.

CS: It's basically The Art of Computer Programming in the form of a degree. Might as well, though you'll have some math classes too that'll likely be painful, but definitely achievable without much prior knowledge.

IT: If it's your life's aspiration to tell boomers to restart their computers and stop visiting porn sites at work until you finally snap and shoot up your company, this is the degree for you.

Discrete Math and Linear Algebra are very important topics. Probably should approach the classes from a 'programmer' perspective. Math and programming really are the same things just dressed up differently. Programming is wordy with heavy emphasis on procedural expression, while math is very terse with heavy emphasis on structures, properties, and effects. Do realize it builds up on earlier ideas much like one's code builds up on dependency APIs you import.

Math can be thought of as a fun game of creating a base rules-set (axioms) and discovering all the cool things you can do with the rules (theorems, lemmas). In this sense it's not too different than a game like AD&D or MTG, just much much more open-ended.

Study your prereqs again, but from an 'overview' standpoint. Mainly Algebra and "pre-Calculus" material. Most times math classes in public schools are taught in such a way that the forest is missed for a particular small subset of trees. IMO, a math class should be taught like a sandwich in three sections:

-Top-down concepts without rigor, start highest level and work down to the base parts, so as to lay out an initial fuzzy roadmap into which students will insert later details (first quarter of semester).

-Detailed and rigorous tour of the base components the high levels ultimately depend on, exploring the levels of abstraction in ascending order (middle two quarters of semester).

-Bottom-up concepts with rigor, but less emphasis on the minute details already covered in middle section and more emphasis on tying them together into a much sharper roadmap for which the seed was planted in the first section.

School tends to mostly be middle section, sometimes with a last section, and almost never the first section. My reason for the first section is to lay out the structure of the subject *before* just learning what seems like random pedantic shit which will later be tied together. This is why I speed-watched lectures on YouTube of a math class I was about to take in the coming weeks. I did not bother to understand everything, just get a layout.

For your Calculus speed-runs, I strongly recommend Herbert Gross' Calculus Revisited series:

https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL3B08AE665AB9002A - Single Variable

https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL1C22D4DED943EF7B - Multiple Variable

https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLD971E94905A70448 - Complex Variable

If you can stand it, playback at 1.25x-1.5x speed. He can be a slow talker. Remember, the goal isn't to fully and rigorously understand it, it's to get some fucking idea what's even going on in the first place. THEN when you've sped through it and have some idea you'll want to go through it (or another source) again more rigorously, and finally wrap it up with a third run at speed, only confirming your knowledge and finding holes (this is where you'll want to use homework as tests).

For Linear Algebra speed-runs, I recommend channel MathTheBeautiful. He presents the material with all three views (arrow, matrix, function/functor) simultaneously. Go through the same way as stated above.

https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLlXfTHzgMRUKXD88IdzS14F4NxAZudSmv - Part 1

https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLlXfTHzgMRULWJYthculb2QWEiZOkwTSU - Part 2

https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLlXfTHzgMRULZfrNCrrJ7xDcTjGr633mm - Part 4

For Discrete Mathematics, I don't have a recommendation at this time. I am formulating a plan as to how I will mentally consume the subject and will present a recommendation in the future for such threads as this one.

While that's true, 1Kb SRAM and DRAM are one of the simplest memory circuit examples. Larger amount of RAM means larger amount of data lines, entrances and exits and memory cells, and these circuits then are being combined in certain ways for larger amount of memory per chip. Previously we looked how generally memory and other devices communicate with CPU using data bus, address bus and control bus, now we on basic level studying of how the memory itself works, but tutor explained things with this example so quickly I had no idea what questions to even ask.

I passed all the relevant subjects and still have another 1.5 years of Uni left. Legit, I'm studying Computer Science at one of Australia's best Uni's and have learned fuck-all programming outside of self-study. It's sad.

I guess doing some serious studying over the Christmas break between practical programming and some math is for the best.Although I've got to prioritise between my current project, learning more maths, doing an advanced game project and doing some basic robotics.

Hopefully by the end of the break I'll be competent enough to get a job.

it may be good to see if you can find good teachers or knowledgeable older students. if you aren't learning or making valuable connections, you're wasting LOTS of time and money.

also while the technical stuff you learn is paramount, do not neglect learning social skills as well. uni almost forced me to do that, and its nice to reap the benefits.

update: the other day I was in class and I mentioned how I got notepad++ set up to run python programs, and this autist next to me asks why I don't just use the IDE we have. I told him because it lags just entering text, isn't as versatile or as configurable, and is super bloated. Running python and notepad++ uses maybe 200M memory on my laptop, while the IDE we use for class, at idle with nothing open, uses 400M. Not to mention when you use it it literally copies a shit ton of files all over the place which is unnecessary.

So he kind of snorts and says "dude the IDE is better that's the whole point of and IDE" and "I don't care how much RAM it uses I have enough". I mean sure, we both have enough RAM to run bloated shit if we want to, but people just default to "muh shiny new is gud". why not use something that gets the job done using less resources?

It's pretty sad because these are literally the people who will be going to work in the industry. It makes it pretty clear why software just gets more bloated and botnetted each year, just thinking about that exchange is making me angry. holy fuck. Same guy had some program freeze and he sperged out, I mentioned using the command line and he just gave me a blank stare. dude didn't know what a command line is, he doesn't know that the command prompt exists in windows, and he wants to do CS. I mean jesus fucking christ, there's no helping these people. And this is even before introducing the concept that there is such thing as a non-windows operating system or something. I don't even want to do CS, I want to go into engineering and these fucks want to write software. the ABSOLUTE state of computer """"science""" these days.

At least my professor is alright. I talked to him about some electronics projects I'm planning to so in the school's machine shop and stuff. but really why are so many people retarded. it blows my mind.

Don't care about those who're content with mediocrity, but care about how it may warp the expectations you have of yourself.

It's easy to excel in an environment where little is demanded from its members, and where the members themselves have little desire to become better. Yes, you may try a little harder and use Notepad++ instead of Eclipse with the Python plugin, and maybe yes, you can actually finish the trivial ""projects"" with excellent scores and all; you may even believe that you're hot shit for doing so. But those are toy projects, and if that's your goal, you may even waste valuable time and opportunities in college by just being content with that. "Why do anything else? I'm doing GREAT already, let's spend yet another evening playing ${GAME} instead!".

>I talked to him about some electronics projects I'm planning to so in the school's machine shop and stuff

It's not necessarily "easy" in a dumbed-down sense, but it is very clearly written and will ease you into more advanced topics. Don't get discouraged if you struggle with some parts at first, that's the only way you learn. Also don't skip the exercises, working through those is the only way to make the material stick.

I'm not the kind of person who would do well trying to make it totally on my own, I'm mostly quiet and not very charismatic. I'm planning to just work for a company for the first few years out of college.

In high school I was a poor student. If I had done better maybe I'd have gotten into a decent college, or gotten scholarships, but I didn't, and I was and am an idiot, so I just went where my parents were fine with paying. Now that I'm in college I fucking hate it, so goddamn much. It's a scam and a shitshow, and everything I'm learning here I could have done on my own.

That being said the only reason to go to college is to get a shitty meaningless degree so shitty companies can hire you to wagecuck for them, and I'm fine with wagecucking for a while as long as it's something I'm fine with. I worked in fast food in high school, and my managers put me up front at the register despite me telling them I did not want to work that position. Still the pay was fine so I did it, but I hated my job, I hated staring at a screen all day, and I hated all the retards who came in. But on days where I had a different position, even like dishwasher I enjoyed it. So this experience leads me to believe that I'd be fine working in another job as long as I don't hate what I'm doing, and to do that I pretty much need a degree.

Right now I'm considering my options. I'm thinking of telling my parents to fuck off, and just going on my own to a community college and maybe work on the side. I don't know what the fuck I'm gonna do though.

fuck college man.

A close family member is an aeronautical engineer and said none of my skill would matter unless I had that degree to back me up. One parent told me often, while I was growing up, if I didn't go to school I would work at a gas station for the rest of my life(trying to scare me straight into believing in higher education or some gay shit). I wasted a bunch a time and have been incredibly depressed at how much youth and energy I wasted in trying to obtain a useless piece of paper. Pretty much all I think about is exacting revenge. I could have taken a year after high school to build up my portfolio(applied and participated in an independent study senior year; have at least one big project to show for it that's attractive to employers) and then been on my merry way but no; fucking retarded boomers and millenial siblings convinced me I was negligent for trying to do that.

>A close family member is an aeronautical engineer and said none of my skill would matter unless I had that degree to back me up

This is generally true advice, especially in his career. Can you imagine applying to an aeronautics firm and telling them you're "self trained". They'd laugh pretty hard. Of course you could be, but they usually take a safety-first mindset and it's easier to let the college verify your readiness rather than take a risk with real lives. They also don't want to risk the very real chance of being sued for hiring a guy who "learned engineering in his basement." In engineering disciplines, even normal grads get screwed over in some positions unless they take additional courses to get a "professional" designation.

Of course they would and I wouldn't blame them! You're right on the money with that one; however, this situation is not analogous to software development/engineering and I'm getting tired of people assuming it's the same(others, not you specifically).

The problem I have with this, with respect to software development/engineering, is that it's just the "appeal to authority" fallacy tenfold. The idea that these degree programs make you an expert in this field, let alone competent in it, is just absurd.
