I do know R and don't like it very much. I'm hoping to learn Julia as a replacement since I prefer the MATLAB linear algebra notations, and python like general programming.

Learning R and writing a breakthrough algorithm are orthogonal. R is a tool, and is relatively easy to learn. Designing algorithms can be very hard, especially in an intensely competitive space like that. Your post makes about as much sense as "Why don't you learn to use a typewriter and write the next American classic novel and become rich?"
