Ubuntu-based Bodhi Linux 5.0.0 release candidate now available

by Brian Fagioli

>One of the best things about the Linux kernel, is that it can be used by lightweight operating systems to breathe new life into older hardware. Not all Linux-based operating systems focus on computers with aging and meager hardware, however. Instead, there are specialized distributions that focus on being light on resources.

>One such excellent option for those with old hardware is Bodhi Linux. This is a lightweight operating system that is based on the wildly popular Ubuntu. It uses the Moksha desktop environment, which is a fork of Enlightenment 17. Today, Bodhi Linux 5.0.0 reaches release candidate status.

>"Today I am very pleased to share the hard work of the Bodhi Team with our latest 5.0.0 pre-release disc which we are tagging as a 'Release Candidate'. These disc images have no major issues that our team has been made aware of and will likely be fairly close to the images we will tag as a stable release later this Summer. Past providing our rock solid Moksha Desktop on an Ubuntu 18.04 base, these disc images are the first to feature our fresh new look which is a modified version of the popular 'Arc Dark' theme colorized in Bodhi Green. Also included are a fresh default wall paper, login screen, and splash scenes as your system starts up," says Jeff Hoogland, Bodhi Linux.

>Hoogland further says, "If all goes as planned we will move to having 5.0.0 be our Stable Release mid August. While this may seem like a long release cycle for some, we much prefer to be confident that our software is stable before calling it such rather than rushing things just to push a release out the door."

>There are two versions of Bodhi Linux 5.0.0 RC available. There is the "Standard" edition, which is designed for 64-bit hardware. The other variant, called "Legacy," is for 32-bit hardware and excludes PAE for better compatibility.

Toshiba XG6 NVMe SSD is world's first with 96-Layer 3D Flash

by Brian Fagioli

>For PC builders and enthusiasts, these are quite exciting times. Hardware is faster than ever, making it possible to build some monstrously powerful computers. Solid state drives in particular have made storage blazing fast -- especially since NVMe began replacing the slower SATA drives.

>Today, Toshiba unveils its latest NVMe solid state drive and it has some revolutionary technology on-board. You see, the "XG6," as it is called, is the first SSD to feature 96-Layer 3D Flash.

>"As the inventor of flash memory and the first to introduce the concept of 3D flash memory, Toshiba Memory is driven to continually push the boundaries of what is possible -- and move the technology forward. Its 3-bit-per-cell (triple-level cell, TLC) BiCS FLASH technology improves the performance, density and efficiency of SSDs. And its innovative 96-layer stacking process combines with advanced circuit and manufacturing technology to achieve a capacity increase of approximately 40 percent per unit chip size over 64-layer 3D flash memory," says Toshiba.

>The famed company further says, "The new XG6 series is available in an M.2 2280 single-sided form factor and supports PCI Express Generation 3x4 lane and NVM Express revision 1.3a. A powerful combination of efficiency and performance is a hallmark of the XG6 series, which consumes 4.7W or less of power and reaches up to 3,180MB/sec of sequential read and nearly 3,000MB/sec of sequential write, and up to 355,000 random read and 365,000 random write IOPS. Achieved by optimizing SoCs, the sequential write performance of the XG6 series leads the industry."

>Toshiba shares the following notable features of the XG6 NVMe SSD.

> • Security: Pyrite or self-encrypting drive models supporting TCG Opal Version 2.01, as well as support for block SID and digital signature

> • Support for user-selectable over provisioning feature through NVMe command

> • Top-of-the-class sequential performance (client class)

> • Enhanced SLC buffer to improve drive performance for client workloads

>While pricing and consumer availability are unknown, we do know storage size. The XG6 NVMe SSD will be sold in 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB capacities.

Spend Labor Day Weekend installing Linux Mint Debian Edition (LMDE) 3 'Cindy'

by Brian Fagioli

>Linux Mint Debian Edition isn’t a very popular operating system. As you can imagine, the normal Linux Mint variant --- which is based on Ubuntu — is used by far more people. It’s not hard to see why this is — the Linux Mint developers don’t really consider LMDE to be anything more than an experiment. You see, it serves as a contingency plan just in case Ubuntu development ever ceases.

>With all of that said, there’s no reason why users shouldn’t give Linux Mint Debian Edition a try. Today, just in time for Labor Day Weekend, LMDE 3 “Cindy” finally sees release. With many people enjoying a long holiday weekend, it is the perfect opportunity to install the rolling release distro and play around with it!

>“LMDE is a Linux Mint project and it stands for ‘Linux Mint Debian Edition.’ Its main goal is for the Linux Mint team to see how viable our distribution would be and how much work would be necessary if Ubuntu was ever to disappear. LMDE aims to be as similar as possible to Linux Mint, but without using Ubuntu. The package base is provided by Debian instead,” says Clement Lefebvre, project leader.

>Lefebvre further says, “There are no point releases in LMDE. Other than bug fixes and security fixes Debian base packages stay the same, but Mint and desktop components are updated continuously. When ready, newly developed features get directly into LMDE, whereas they are staged for inclusion on the next upcoming Linux Mint point release.”

Mageia 6.1 Linux distribution now available

By Brian Fagioli

>While many people are familiar with popular Linux distributions like Ubuntu, Fedora, and Mint, there are far more open source operating systems available. There are probably too many, but I digress. Please know, just because a distro isn't very well known, doesn’t mean it's bad.

>One such quality Linux distro that isn't super popular is Mageia. It is a fork of the once wildly popular Mandriva operating system. Today, Mageia 6.1 becomes available for download. It features LTS Linux kernel 4.14 and updated Nvidia drivers.

>"This release brings all of the updates and development that has gone into Mageia 6 together into fresh installation media, giving users a kernel that supports hardware released after Mageia 6. The new installations will benefit from the countless updates that current fully updated Mageia systems will have, allowing new installations to avoid the need for a large update post install," says Donald Stewart, Mageia.

>Stewart further says, "...if you are currently running an up to date Mageia 6 system, there is no need to reinstall Mageia 6.1 as you will already be running the same packages. This release is available with only Live media, i.e. Live Plasma, Live GNOME and Live Xfce in 64bits, and Live Xfce in 32 bits. A network installation is also available, for users wanting more granular control over the installation."

Linux on DeX Beta can turn your Samsung Galaxy smartphone or tablet into an Ubuntu desktop

By Brian Fagioli

>As Microsoft continues to sully the reputation of Windows 10 with buggy releases and other failures, Linux continues to be a great alternative. Slowly but steadily, consumers are starting to realize Windows isn't necessary anymore. Hell, if Microsoft no longer cares about quality, and is satisfied to release deficient operating system updates, why does it deserve our money and attention?

>Linux is great because operating systems based on it can adapt to various hardware configurations -- from meager low-powered computers to hardcore gaming PCs. Android phones are Linux-based, so it should not be surprising that Samsung is keen on transforming some of its Galaxy phones and tablets into makeshift Ubuntu desktops with the use of hardware docks and its DeX software. Called "Linux on DeX," it was announced last year (as "Linux on Galaxy"), but you can now finally sign up to beta test it.

>"When it was first demoed at last year’s Samsung Developer Conference in San Francisco, Linux on DeX generated significant buzz within the developer community by presenting a simple and convenient way to use Samsung DeX to build apps within a Linux development environment. The combination of Samsung DeX and the Linux on DeX app adds new levels of flexibility to developers’ work by allowing them to connect their Galaxy device [Note 9 and Tab S4 for now] to a monitor using just an HDMI adapter, and instantly enjoy a fuller computing experience when on the go," says Samsung.

>The Galaxy-maker further explains, "Linux on DeX frees developers from their desks by allowing them to access a PC-like Linux development environment anytime, anywhere. The app enables them to work on both Android and Ubuntu-based Linux distributions. Samsung provides a modified version of Ubuntu for Linux on DeX users, and has been working closely with Canonical, the company behind Ubuntu, to provide the best experience."

>Samsung Developer Conference 2018 attendee Ericka Jackson offered the following statement.

I play around with a lot of microcontrollers like Arduino and Raspberry Pi, so being able to have Linux on a more portable platform will be a lot of fun, because then I can take it and access Linux environment outside of my own network. It was really impressive. I'm looking forward to playing with it.

ADATA announces svelte and speedy UE700 Pro USB 3.1 flash drive

By Brian Fagioli

>Even though cloud storage is ubiquitous these days, I still love a good ol' USB flash drive. They are great for installing various Linux distributions -- it is handy to have, say, Fedora and Ubuntu install media ready to go. But also, sometimes -- for various reasons -- you may just need to share files offline.

>Today, ADATA launches a beautiful new USB Type-A flash drive. Called "UE700 Pro," it is very fast and slim. It features a retractable design, which I prefer -- there is no cap to lose. Best of all, it is offered in capacities up to 256GB.

>"Employing USB 3.1 the UE700 Pro sports fast read/write speeds of up to 360/180MB per second. That means users can transfer a 4GB high-resolution movie file in a speedy 22 seconds . Also, in an era of 4K videos, there can never be too much storage capacity. Therefore the UE700 comes with up to 256GB of storage capacity so users can capture hi-res photos and videos without fear of running out of space," says ADATA.

>The company further says, "The drive features a capless design where the USB connector is concealed in a compact body, fully protected without the need for a drive cap. A simple thumb swipe forward makes it ready to use, and the reverse motion stows the connector for storage or travel. What’s more, it sports an ultra-thin 7mm form factor and an elegant brushed aluminum surface that highlights the sleek concentric lines that emanate from the beautiful blue LED indicator. A lanyard hole offers convenience and personalization allowing users to attach the UE700 Pro to a lanyard or keychain for easy carrying, or accessorizing."

>ADATA shares the following specifications.

Capacity: 32GB / 64GB / 128GB / 256GB
Color: Black
Dimensions (L x W x H): 63 x 23 x 7mm / 2.5 x 0.9 x 0.3"
Weight: 11g / 0.4oz
Interface: USB 3.1 (backward compatible with USB 2.0)
Performance: Up to: 360MB/s (Read), 180MB/s (Write) (256GB model)
System Requirements: Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8, 8.1, 10, Mac OS X 10.6 or later, Linux kernel 2.6 or later, with no device driver needed
Accessories: USB 3.1 cable, Quick Start Guide
Warranty: Lifetime Warranty

>Unfortunately, as is typical with ADATA product announcements, cost and availability is unknown. We will know pricing soon, however, once the drive hits retailers like Newegg and Amazon.

SuperTuxKart, the open source Mario Kart clone, achieves beta status with network support

By Brian Fagioli

>While I appreciate hardware makers and game developers pushing the boundaries of what gaming can be, it is important to remember one important fact -- fun trumps all. In other words, it doesn't matter how much processing power a computer or console has, or how beautiful a game's graphics are, if it isn't fun to play! That's probably a big reason why retro-gaming is so popular these days.

>For Linux users, gaming is getting much better these days, especially with Steam support. One game in particular, however, has brought much joy to Linux users without the need for high-end graphics cards. Called "SuperTuxKart," it is essentially an open source clone of Mario Kart, that is simply fun to play. While the title character is the Linux mascot, there are Windows and macOS versions too. Thankfully, the game is about to get even better, as networking is being added -- allowing you to play against others over LAN or the internet. Today, following an alpha period, that feature finally becomes available in beta, with version 0.10-beta1.

>"We are now confident that our code is stable enough for a beta release: 0.10-beta1. This means that we will provide our usual set of binaries and installers for all supported platforms. And hopefully that means that many more people will be able to test this current version. Note that we consider this beta very stable, de-facto very close to a release candidate. But we are waiting for another track to be ready to be included, so we are using this time to give more players the opportunity to test (or re-test) our online racing implementation," says Joerg Henrichs, Project Lead.

>Henrichs further says, "The network implementation is actually quite sophisticated, but there are still limits in what we can do about the latency (or ping) between clients and servers. We strongly recommend to find a server with a ping of under 150ms for a smooth playing experience. The ping to the server will be shown when you connect to it. You can of course try servers with higher latency - while it should still work, you might notice more often that karts stutter, drive like drunk (though that might of course also be the skill of the other players) or are 'teleported' around. In addition you need a stable connection, so if you experience significant packet loss or jitter you will see the same strange behavior."

>The SuperTuxKart developers share the following features that have been added since the last stable release.

- You can now race against your friends or people world-wide in online races, either in LAN or WAN games.

- You can either run a server on your own computer, all handled by SuperTuxKart, fire up a stand-alone server, or connect to servers already running.

- A Raspberry Pi 3 is powerful enough to act as a game server (though you need a server-only binary). We provide several game servers on VPS and Pis that are constantly up.

- On special so-called 'ranked servers' a global ranking of online players is maintained.

- If you are interested in the beta of SuperTuxKart with the networking functionality, you can check it out here. It is currently frozen from a feature perspective, and the developers promise it is very stable.

deepin 15.9 Linux distribution is here with new multi-touch gestures and improved power management

By Brian Fagioli

>Since Microsoft will be ending Windows 7 support in less than a year, many computer users will have to decide if they will move onto the much-maligned Windows 10. Alternatively, depending on their needs, they could opt for a Mac or Chromebook. But what if you are happy with your current computer and don't want to buy new hardware? In that case, Linux can save the day. The excellent Netrunner, for instance, is a great option for Windows switchers that fear a change of user interface.

>If you are open to moving away from the traditional Windows-like interface, another superb Linux distribution to consider is deepin. If you aren't familiar, deepin is a very stable operating system that focuses heavily on appearance. Quite frankly, it puts Windows 10 to shame in that regard -- its "Deepin Desktop Environment" is far superior to the dated and boring interface found on Microsoft's latest operating system. Today, deepin 15.9 becomes available for download with a huge list of changes, including new multi-touch gestures and improved power management.

>"In deepin 15.9, many known bugs are fixed and the existing functions are optimized. Compared with deepin 15.8, deepin 15.9 adds support for touchscreen gestures and onscreen keyboard, optimizes the using frequency algorithm for application sequence in Launcher mini mode, and introduces a new function - Smart Mirror Switch, hoping to bring users more stable and efficient experiences. Since deepin 15.8, deepin have used a rolling update strategy to release the updates on a regular basis. That is to say, deepin 15.9 covers all the system updates after deepin 15.8," says The deepin Developers.

>The devs further say, "For touchscreen devices, multiple gestures are supported, including click, double click, long press to call out the context menu, slide up and down and others. Working together with onscreen keyboard, you are able to enjoy the free operations on touchscreen. More user-friendly power management for laptops and desktops. Whether your computer is connected to power supply or not, you can easily change the monitor and computer suspend time for different scenarios. New feature - Smart Mirror Switch in update settings. Switch it on to connect to the quickest mirror site automatically, which speeds up the download and installation to save your time."

HyperX breaks DDR4 RAM overclocking world record with 5608MHz speed!

By Brian Fagioli

>If you are a PC builder and/or gamer, you know this is a wonderful time to be alive. Hardware is faster than ever, while companies are increasingly catering to enthusiasts with components that look great too. And yeah, appearance matters -- assembling a PC is art to many people. It is truly remarkable to see the amazing desktops consumers are building these days. RGB lighting in particular has been a fun game-changer.

>When selecting memory for a new build, there are a few brands of RAM that PC builders can always depend upon, such as G.SKILL, HyperX, and Corsair -- all three are excellent. HyperX in particular -- the gaming division of legendary memory-maker Kingston -- has amassed a cult following by consistently offering top hardware at reasonable pricing. HyperX has branched out from RAM, however, also offering storage, headsets, and keyboards to name few. With that said, memory is still its claim to fame, and today, HyperX announces it has reached a huge milestone -- it has shattered the DDR4 memory overclocking world record. Seriously, folks, you won't believe the speed achieved -- 5608MHz!

>"HyperX Predator DDR4 memory was used to set a new overclocking world record for the fastest DDR4 memory frequency at 5608MHz. The world record for highest frequency was set by overclocker 'TOPPC' of MSI using a single HyperX Predator DDR4 8G module on an MPG Z390I GAMING EDGE AC. At the time of this release, the record-breaking frequency is posted on HWBOT, the site for PC enthusiasts looking for news, tips and information on overclocking, benchmarks and competitions," says Kingston's gaming division.

>The machine used to break the world record is using an Intel Core i9-9900K CPU running at 3.60GHz. Since the overclocker, TOPPC, works for MSI, he of course used one of his company's motherboards -- the MPG Z390I GAMING EDGE AC (MS-7C04). The specs of the RAM can be seen below.

Total Size: 8192 MB
Type: Single Channel (64 bit) DDR4-SDRAM
Frequency: 2804.4 MHz (DDR4-5608) - Ratio 1:55
Timings: 31-31-31-63-3 (tCAS-tRC-tRP-tRAS-tCR)

>Before you get excited and think you can achieve such a speed, please know -- you probably (definitely) cannot. First off, the RAM used to break the world record is not yet on the market -- it is a single 8GB stick of 4266MHz RAM (part number: KHX4266C19D4/8GX) that was provided to the overclocker by HyperX. This upcoming product apparently won't be available for purchase until Q2 2019 at the earliest. Not to mention, both the processor and RAM were apparently cooled using liquid nitrogen, making the overclock impractical, albeit really friggin' cool!

>You can see proof of the record-breaking achievement here [http://web.archive.org/web/20190122130905/https://valid.x86.fr/sbz1uy] and here [http://web.archive.org/web/20190122130910/https://hwbot.org/submission/4039905_toppc_memory_frequency_ddr4_sdram_2804.4_mhz/].

System76 unveils 'Darter Pro' Linux laptop with choice of Ubuntu or Pop!_OS

By Brian Fagioli

>When people come to me for advice on buying a computer that comes with a Linux-based operating system pre-installed, my first suggestion is always System76. While other companies, such as Dell, also make great laptops running Ubuntu, for instance, System76 stands above the rest by also offering its own operating system -- Pop!_OS (which is based on Ubuntu). In other words, System76 has better control over the overall customer experience. Not to mention, its contributions to both the Linux and open source communities are invaluable.

>Today, the company unveils its latest laptop, and it looks like a winner. The 15.6-inch "Darter Pro," as it is called, is thin, but not overly so -- it still has USB-A ports (thankfully). The computer is quite modern, however, as it also has a USB-C/Thunderbolt 3 port.

>"Outfitted with a large battery inside its thin 18mm chassis, the Darter Pro is expected to last a full work day without needing a charger. The Darter Pro was tested under a variety of conditions, including video, music, email, writing via the cloud, and online messaging programs. On average, the battery lasted about 7 hours. Customers have been requesting improved battery life for quite some time, so the company is confident that the Darter Pro will be a coveted option among those who prefer to work unplugged," says System76.

>The famed Linux-based computer-seller further says, "A thin bezel brings the user closer to the action on its 15” screen. Tactile feedback from the multi-color backlit keyboard provides the feel of mechanical keys within its chiclet design. Travelers and remote workers can also take advantage of the Darter Pro’s lightweight chassis; as System76’s most portable machine, Darter Pro won’t hamper a day on foot."

>Alex Gerber, Copywriter for System76, has gotten to use the machine early and offers the following statement about it.

I'm very picky about trackpads. Normally the mouse lags behind my finger, but it was amazing to me how well this one followed my movements. The best part was getting to migrate away from my desk for a whole day to focus on my writing assignments without having to worry about my battery dying on me.

System76 is cucked for not offering non-systemDick distros as defaults on their latest hardware, but you can manually install a non-systemDick distro anyway.

System76 'Darter Pro' laptop finally here -- support the Linux community and buy it!

By Brian Fagioli

>At the end of last month, BetaNews shared with you that System76 was preparing to release a refreshed version of its Darter Pro laptop. This computer features a large 15.6-inch display and a rather thin and light body. There are many useful ports too, such as USB-C/Thunderbolt 3, USB-A, gigabit Ethernet, an SD Card slot, and both HDMI and DisplayPort for video. If you are a Linux user, the new Darter Pro really looks like a home run. System76 even managed to fit a number pad on the right side of the keyboard -- a much desired feature for many consumers.

>We reported that the laptop would become available for purchase on February 5, and thankfully, that proved to be correct. Yes, dear Linux users, you can finally buy the new Darter Pro. Pricing is very competitive, starting at just $999! Best of all, by purchasing a System76 computer, you are supporting a longtime contributor to the Linux community.

>What does a dollar shy of a thousand get you? A pretty decent configuration. The base model comes with a very capable 8th generation quad-core 3.9 GHz Intel Core i5 processor (8265U). RAM is "just" 8GB DDR4, which should be plenty for general computer use, but professionals will probably want to bump that up. There is only room for one storage drive, and by default, you get an M.2 SATA 120GB model.

>If you want to increase the specs, you can swap the 8th Gen Core i5 for a 4.6GHz Core i7 (8565U) -- also a quad-core. RAM can be double to 16GB or quadrupled to 32GB. For storage, you have many SSD options, with capacity up to 2TB NVMe or 1TB SATA. If you were to choose the absolute top specs, you would be looking at a price of $2,192 -- not crazy for an 8th Gen i7, 32GB RAM, and a 2TB NVMe SSD.

>Most consumers won't need to max out the specs, however, so if you do want to bump it up just a bit, I would recommend sticking with the Core i5, but upgrading to 16GB of RAM and the 500GB NVMe storage drive. The price with those options? $1,293 -- totally affordable. Of course, you should ultimately choose the configuration that best meets your needs. For all configurations, you must choose between Ubuntu and the Ubuntu-based Pop!_OS -- I suggest the latter.

Howard Stern SiriusXM video content comes to Amazon Fire TV

By Brian Fagioli

>Howard Stern is arguably the greatest broadcaster of all time -- his radio show is legendary for its innovation and laugh-out-loud comedy. For well over 30 years, Stern has been broadcasting in some form -- first terrestrial radio, but since 2006, he has been on satellite (what is now known as SiriusXM).

>As great as listening to Howard is, his show can be very visual too -- it can be very rewarding to actually see what is happening in his radio studio. His E! television show is long gone, as is his "Howard TV" on demand service. Thankfully, the SiriusXM mobile app for Android and iOS now offers Howard Stern video content. Of course, wouldn't it be better to watch that content on your television rather than a small screen? Starting today you can, as the video content is now available on Amazon Fire TV. Previously, the only way to get the video onto your TV was using a Chromecast dongle.

>"The SiriusXM app on Amazon Fire TV now matches the experience on subscribers' mobile phones and the web player on SiriusXM.com, which boasts capabilities that help users find more of what they like across SiriusXM's 200+ channels. SiriusXM’s streaming subscribers will find it easier to navigate through categories and find shows, and the app’s individualized 'ForYou' recommendations make the next great piece of music, talk, news, entertainment or sports programming easier to discover. Those using the Fire TV Cube can also use the Alexa voice service to play live SiriusXM content," says SiriusXM.

>The satellite company further says, "Howard Stern video is arranged and presented on the SiriusXM app in a way that makes it easy to discover and view some of the best content from the King of All Media. Subscribers can now watch Howard Stern's full-length interviews with celebrity guests, highlighted show clips and show specials, and memorable musical performances from the Howard Stern studio, from both recent shows and deep in The Howard Stern Show archives."

>Keep in mind, the SiriusXM app is not only about Howard Stern, nor is it solely focused on video -- it is mostly an audio affair. Subscribers to the service can access countless channels, featuring commercial-free music, talk, and more. In other words, even if you aren't a fan of Stern, there's plenty of other great SiriusXM content to enjoy on your Fire TV. Hopefully Howard Video will come to more platforms soon, including Apple TV and Roku.

Mission Workshop 'Axis VX' is a modern and stylish fanny pack for your tech gear

By Brian Fagioli

>Ah, the fanny pack -- one of the most controversial pieces of fashion. Many people decry this waist-worn bag as ugly and nerdy, but they are wrong. Actually, the fanny pack was just way ahead of its time. In the 1980s and 90s, people simply didn't have all the tech gear we do nowadays. In other words, its usefulness is more appropriate for modern times. How great would it feel to not have your phone charger, keys, wallet, flash drive, or battery bank stuffed into your overloaded pockets?

>Today, a company named Mission Workshop launches a fanny pack for 2019. Called "Axis V," it is an upgrade to its previous generation product. This waist-worn bag can sit above either your buttocks or crotch -- you choose the position. You can also wear it to the side if you want. If you get tired of having it on your waist, it can also be slung over your shoulder -- it is very versatile.

>"Equally at home on the dirt or in the streets, the minimal silhouette is free from adornments to snag on clothing or trailside obstacles, while the 2.5L volume is optimal for carrying everyday essentials. The Axis VX stands out amongst waist packs with Arkiv compatibility allowing it to piggyback on larger Mission Workshop packs with Arkiv Rails, making it an ideal travel companion for adventures on two wheels or afoot," says Mission Workshop.

>The company further says, "The upgrade to rugged, weatherproof VX-21 fabric removes weight from the pack while simultaneously adding durability. Additionally, the Axis VX features a Fidlock magnetic buckle, which allows for easy one-handed removal."

>Mission Workshop shares the following features and specifications.

Dimension Polyant VX-21 Main Body Fabric
Fidlock magnetic buckle
Laser cut Arkiv compatible back panel with adjustable hideaway waist strap
Coated YKK zipper with kissing flap construction for added weather resistance
Floating internal lining for weather resistance.
Hidden U-lock carry loop
Internal zippered organization pocket for keys, phone, and wallet
Dimensions: 5"x10.25"x3.4"
Internal volume: 2.5L

>The Mission Workshop "Axis VX" can be had here for $155 after coupon code AXISVX. Yes, that is a lot of money, but this is not mass-produced crap. The company says these are made by hand here in the good ol' USA. Best of all, they are guaranteed for life. You can choose among black, gray, and white colors.

Privacy for the win! Startpage.com defeats Google and Bing to become best search engine

By Brian Fagioli

>Google may be the world's most popular search engine, but that doesn't necessarily mean it is the best. Don't forget, Google is notorious for tracking users and logging search activity. Not to mention, there are many other search engines out there, such as Microsoft's Bing, Yahoo, and DuckDuckGo to name a few.

>Believe it or not, a lesser-known search engine, Startpage.com, has defeated Google (and all others) to become the search champion! You see, following an in-depth investigation, German organization "Stiftung Warentest" has declared the search engine to be the best. Not familiar with that organization? Please know, it is similar to Consumer Reports in the USA. So yeah, this is a big deal. And yes, Startpage.com also defeated fellow privacy-focused search engine DuckDuckGo.

>"The testing involved comparing 50 search queries, that in some cases included typos, vague descriptions, and other ambiguities. Then the relevance of the first six search results was evaluated. The quality of the results were then reviewed in light of other search engine features and policies," says StartPage.com.

>Robert Beens, the company's CEO explains, "We are honored to achieve first place in this test. It shows that private search has come a long way and that it's not necessary to track people to attain award-winning service and profitability."

>While this is certainly good news for Startpage.com and the privacy community overall, "best" is obviously subjective. In other words, if you don't care about privacy and tracking, Google could possibly be the best for you. Hell, I know some folks that swear Microsoft's Bing is the greatest. With all of that said, StartPage.com provides Google search results without all the tracking -- it's the best of both worlds!

>If you want to read the study in full yourself, you can do so here [archive link at the end]. While it is in German, a translation service should make it totally readable.

>Will you give Startpage.com a chance now that it has been declared the "best" search engine? Do you already use it? Please tell me in the comments below.
