Hey /tech/. I've been thinking about something recently -- would you advocate for the possibly illegal leaking of documentation from companies like Microsoft, Apple, Google, Facebook, etc, in an effort to further the Free Software movement? And if you had the chance to do this, would you?

This would obviously have many benefits (most obviously helping people make a free alternative to a proprietary program or network service).

Of course, intellectual property is greatest evil of modern technology.

Bureaucrats shat out intellectual property and technology was the fan that spread it.

This is the attitude I wish all normalfags had. Yes of course you should leak anything and everything you get your hands on including their source code. Faggots will tell you it'll harm Linux because

>If we read the source code of Windows 2k and work on the kernel they could sue us!

But that's just gaslighting from Microsoft shills embedded throughout the community.

>>934676

I couldn't agree more.

>>934685

Knowing some people that work for Google and MS, they always say "it will hurt the community overall." It's nonsense. The more information we have to write software, the better. They also somehow rationalize that what they're doing "isn't that bad." It's not like the average devs are evil, but I think companies trick them into thinking they're doing something that's good for the world. In reality, it's all PR bullshit.

This.

It goes against every principle scholars have developed since greek times.

I am all for leaking documents and code, especially if it's for software that has been abandoned and is effectively held hostage. However, no one would dare to touch it because of the legal issues of using proprietary code. This is why I don't get why people are giving shit to the guy who returned the Starcraft source code back to Blizzard; even if he released the code to the public no one would dare to make an open-source Starcraft engine. There is this one Wing Commander fansite who have the source code for Wing Commander, but they cannot release it either:

https://www.wcnews.com/news/update/11167

Until the laws change there is not much hope. Copyright law is fucking broken, if you haven't been able to make a profit from software in over two decades, then you never will be.

>what is TF2 classic

>what is openmorrorwind

How to release source code and work on it

>actually not stop and continue the reverse engineer project sekritly and privately (if they got snapshots and you use windows with rdp then you deserve it!)

>then make or use existing cracker release group release your "reverse engineered crap" to make it seem "not my fault but thanks to them (you)" so everyone can pick the code up

>???

>!!!

Just follow the same concepts the console crackers always use.

I am not familiar with TF2 classic, but OpenMW is not using any code from Bethesda. You are allowed to reverse-engineer the binaries, buy you cannot just swipe the original source from a server and run with it.

 No.934718>>934720 >>935293

Leaking software literally harms the prospect of reverse-engineering of that software, you fucking retard. Now the author of that software has evidence that similar projects could have feasibly stolen from them.

You're not arguing with me, retard. In case you don't have basic reading comprehension, you're arguing with the trillion dollar corporation who will say anything to efface competition.

Never expected anyone to know IP was a sham. Usually normie faggots whine about muh starving creators. All the while completely ignoring that IP goes completely against its stated goal to advance science and the useful arts by locking up knowledge and impeding collaboration. Having historically been used to enable the existence faggots who buy rights to seek rent, raise the cost of/outright impede research, bankrupt the competition with vexatious litigation, squat names, etc.

I'm so happy this board has woken up to the fact that IP is a joke of a concept.

Lmao no, you just get separate people to document the leaked data than the ones programming like ReactOS does and you're good.
