Anybody here work with FORTRAN? I've recently started learning it and it seems like a really interesting, if archaic, language. Really, from what I've seen, it feels more like a scripting language than a full-blown compiled language.

If you do use FORTRAN, what compiler do you use and which is your favorite? What do you use it for and would a more contemporary language do it better (are you using FORTRAN to deal with legacy baggage?)

>/tech/ doing real work

Fortran is currently the best language for distributed numeric operations. Multidimensional array calculations on a cluster and what not. It is consistently benchmarked as the fastest in this domain. Its absolute shit for everything else these days though.

Number crunching*? Use FORTRAN.

* Only if you're running code on a super-computing cluster *might* you be number crunching.

Massive parallelism seems weird for something so old.

Fortran has been kept updated. Last stable release from 2008 t. wikipedia.

There are huge codebases in fortran that have to be maintained so the groups pay for tool support. It has OpenCL/CUDA glue too as all those CPU + MPI clusters need to gradually incorporate modern tech.

I've actually done some modeling work with CUDA FORTRAN for an egnineering firm and prefer it over JavaCL, which is, itself, easier than C++ OpenCL.
