Hail, /tech/ not sure if I should ask it here

I wanted to get a sort of secure and personal self-hosted cloud(?) or collaborative\household management application for local network where I or other members of my household could share documents\accounts across all PCs, keep track of assets, and so on and so on to make life a bit more easy and planned.

Because right now it's pretty chaotic, I'm using errr, a good ole physical ledger and it's getting pretty darn annoying to get through all the bureaucracy instead of just(ideally) typing and clicking new entries and let the machine to do all the work. We are living in 21st IT century after all, so there should be tons of available cool options for automation... right?

I was looking at this list:

https://github.com/Kickball/awesome-selfhosted#groupware

and can't really decide what is easiest to get up and running for someone who knows nothing about networking.

I could probably go as simple as spreadsheet but I don't know how to share them across local network without risk of them being compromised, you see I've heard tons of stories about people who didn't consider these security aspects and lost crucial data in the end. (something that worked as google docs\spreadsheets accessible only from local network and probably encrypted would be pretty cool)

I humbly ask you tech-savvy lads for an advice where to start. I don't know how to set up a proper local network so that it won't be that easy to crack down and I figure I would need a home server of sorts(would old but still working notebook work as one)?

Post this in the sticky, it's why it's there.
