How to easily keep track of a lot of key-bindings when configuring programs.

So I run i3wm and it uses a lot of key-bindings and I want to try a different configuration but I find it hard to keep track on what bindings have already been used, and which hasn't.

Any ideas for this?

I'm imagining a spiral bound book where each page is laminated and has a keyboard printed on it. It could come with pages for keybindings for popular programs, and then templates to make your own. Keep it as a desk reference.

Yes I guess I could print a empty keyboard and color in/write on it. A bit low tech but it could be good,

This problem was solved like 40 years ago.

Why don't you just comment out all the keys in the config you won't use? Is it really that hard to keep track of keys for i3? All you really need for basic usage is:

>open dmenu

>close window

>switch workspaces

>navigate windows

>move windows

>reload/exit i3 (just in case)

Once you are comfortable, you can enable different window types, open terminal, toggle floating, shortcuts for macros, and the like.

Because I want to remap about half keys ( workspaces and moving ) to letters instead, but a lot of them are already in use for other things.

So it's a lot at the same time and what I want to use is already used.

But I think I'll go with the paper route if nothing better comes up.

Don’t use so many key bindings. Go with defaults when possible. Keep customizations to a minimum. Don’t waste time on nonsense and just use your computer.

I honestly wish everything had this feature.

Have a different keyboard for different lists

Put stickers on them

Good point. You could plug in 7 or 8 labeled keyboards and then you don't have to cross reference.

I can't believe no one wrote a software for centralized input config management in all these years.

You can start yourself by making a script that fetches all software input configs and arranges them in 3-dimensional array table for cross-referencing. Then you put a visualization on top of that and a GUI.
