Why is this still in use? I have a windows phone and Iwant to recover quite a lot of things that I've deleted. Now, I'd usually use testdisk, but MTP forces the device to be "mounted" (idk if that even happens) in a separate place like

/run/user/[number]gvfs/mtp\:host\=whatever

I establish a symbolic link to it from a directory in /home but testdisk doesn't recognize symbolic links. And

jmtpfs

requires it to be mounted (how?)

I can access it in thunar but nowhere else.

help?

MTP won't give you low enough level access to the filesystem to run recoveries. Even if you use something terminal based to mount it testdisk won't work. The only way to do it is to run a native app on the booted phone itself.

MTP is the devil itself, thankfully my phone lets me use sftp for file transfers.

Mery Christmas and congrats on your free "Winows" Phone. Be forewarned that before I was a neo-ludite I used one. So I can say to you non-luddites that it is a scam. There are no apps for it, the things break, and it isn't even Windows. It is similar to the difference between iOS and Macintosh. The system fails in so many ways, and lacks simple things that you have come to expect and know from cellular phones. The majority of the cell phone apps are made by third-party developers in India while any official apps have not been updated since 2011. I assumed when I got it it would be like a Pocket PC runnin Windows NT like Android is a buthered GNU/Linux distribution. It isn't that. It is a wholly unique thing. Enjoy your hell.

I know. I don't really get any calls and I only use it for whatsapp because everyone else in my workplace started using it and I couldn't be assed to buy a new one for a shitty messaging software.

Because the SD card/internal storage is already mounted by the phone's OS. MTP is just a shitty solution to that.
