Where do you get your good ideas for programming projects? I'm too boring to need much of anything automated, and games require assets and more ideas.

My motivating factor is making something that people will use, so lackluster clones of other software probably won't work that well.

get on one of those freelance work sites and look at the projects that are open for bidding

Get a cute skirt and kneel by my side as I code and take the leftover ideas I don't use.

i figured i might as well give you a better response.

to get ideas you work on stuff. for example, you are working on a project and you need to solve an ancillary problem first, but you realize that your solution can apply to other projects just as well. or you might be working on a project and an idea out of left-field will hit you.

don't sit at your desk with a blank piece of paper and motionless pen. just start writing on anything. reinvent the wheel if you have to, because you might make something better in the long run.

Ideas keep flowing when you're on crack

Think of small frustrations you have during the day, little things and try to improve them. Or different things you find yourself doing throughout the day on a regular basis, or on occasion. Then try to see if software can make those things easier. Instead of thinking of what other people will use, try to first think of what YOU will use, or want to use.

How about BETTER clones?

I look at programs written in C/C++ and rewrite them in Rust.

Now there's a good idea.

I look for Rust projects and re-write them in Ada.

Since all rust projects are shallow hipster copycats of better, more mature C/C++ projects, why not skip the trash and just rewrite the originals?

If you want people to use something, it's not just the idea but you need it to be easy to consume (webapp or mobile app) and with a polished UI.

Or, you could build tools for other programmers in which case you can build a command line tool.

Another option is to contribute to open source projects, which can be daunting at first since the codebase could be huge and hard to understand, but probably very rewarding.

^a reddit space. Because I expect markdown to join adjacent elements, I add spacing out of fear.

^a FUCKING PARAGRAPH.

Get a job. Lament that a thing sucks. Make the thing suck less. Ex. "goddamnit, why have an option to use checksums of only some files?"

why doesn't rsync have an option.

Fucking captcha. Obviously also the reason I just missed my stop.
