Hey /tech/, I'm bored so I wanted to install NeXTSTEP 3.3 on Virtualbox. I got it from WinWorldPC, and tried to install it without success. I'm still searching the Internet for any fixes.

Basically the issue is, I boot up the Boot Disk fine, switch over to Device Drivers Disk and then Beta Drivers Disk, I load up SCSI driver 2 (to avoid an installation bug says a site I stumbled upon), and then I select the Dual IDE driver from the Beta Disk, then it gets to the graphical loader, but says No Valid Disk Label. It tells me "No CD-ROM Drive" (even though one is already there?), and asks me to select the root drive. I type hd0, it does the initialization again and then panics. I haven't been able to get beyond this point.

Anyone has any idea? I can't try QEMU right now at work with only Windows computers but will do at home and post results.

A lot of old operating systems have issues on Virtualbox. Even Windows 95 is a bit buggy. I'd love to emulate BeOS5 because I still have programs saved, but it kernel panics on boot.

...even TempleOS. That's why Terry mainly uses VMw

are.

You can run linux in VM and qemu inside of it, not ideal, but at least you can see if it works at all in QEMU.

Seconded OP.

NeXTSTEP is so cool.

I love IRIX and BeOS but something about NeXT is so cool and novel. Shane it became MacOS, would love a haiku equivalent of NeXT.

MacOS 1-9

OSX 10

macOS Tim COCK

You can install OpenStep, but it was aged 15 years ago.

It's hard to find copies of it and since it remains closed-source, there are no ways to improve it.

I feel the same way anon sores about os2/warp but atleast autists are reverse-engineering that.

I see it runs on M68000. maybe you could installed inside of Amiga emulator, WinUAE

OPENSTEP (NeXTSTEP 4.0+) has good x86 support.

Otherwise, this should work for NeXTSTEP 3.3 and lower

Good luck.

There's GNUstep, but it's buggy as hell.

 No.810627

GNUStep only implements prtions of OPENSTEP, namely the window widgets (Cocoa API for Objective C).

Shame nobody has done anything with GNUStep. Modern Cocoa with a good WM+compositor like Aqua/Quartz or ?/Wayland beats the hell out of X11 GTK or QT.

Haiku OS x86-32 has limited compatibility with BeOS programs, so you might try that. If you don't know already, Haiku OS is to BeOS what React OS is to Windows.

There is always straight emulation. Try QUEMU with all the JIT and virtualization stuff disabled, bochs, or PCem.

TempleOS was designed to work in a virtual machine, he does all his development in a VM on ubuntu.

Even though ReactOS is meant for real hardware, the devs also use Untunu 16.04 LTS and develop ReactOS in and alongside a Windows VM.
