Do I need it, or should I replace just the bead?

Don't want to buy a new power cord

If you're worried about noise, just get some snap on ferrites.

Never mind, but thanks, It was nothing fancy, just a tube shaped magnet.

I put the cord through it and spliced it and taped the ferrite bead in approximately the place it originally was.

2nd time that i've tripped over the cord so hard that I broke it and had to slice

At least the plug at the back of the laptop didn't come loose like one of my other computers

Yeah just don't put it right in the middle or anything. Try to chose a spot near one end. It cuts down on harmonics getting through.
