>Purism isn’t only about designing and producing secure hardware and software, and we have just added a neat bundle of services to our offer:

>Encrypted chat -- simple end-to-end encrypted chat, VoIP, and video calling.

>Encrypted mail -- easy to use, end-to-end encrypted email.

>Encrypted VPN -- toggle your connection to a secure VPN tunnel.

>Public social -- safe and privacy-respecting social media account.

>At Purism, we are a Social Purpose Company. We don’t exploit you (and, by our own philosophy and contract, we can’t exploit you). We don’t offer advertising services to third parties. We don’t track users. We don’t look at, sell, or share anything -- we offer a simple subscription model.

>Librem One is a subscription service, using open standards and free software, and it is available for $7.99/mo, or $71.91/yr for the four services. Librem One does offer a basic tier, with encrypted chat and public social, for a pick-your-price from free to $5.99/mo. Librem One bundles popular, convenient services into a single, easy-to-use account -- with more services are to be added over time.

So which faceless cloud giant is going to operate the metal that these services run on? Anyone know?

Whois queries for librem.one (the domain this thing is actually at apparently) come back with literally nothing. Trying it with puri.sm gets me, among other things:

DNS Servers:
ns1.puri.sm
ns2.puri.sm
ns3.puri.sm

If you try the same with Duckduckgo, you'll see it list AWS names for their name servers.

Name Server: ns-175.awsdns-21.com
Name Server: ns-691.awsdns-22.net
Name Server: ns-1027.awsdns-00.org
Name Server: ns-1816.awsdns-35.co.uk

Using an IP location finder service on the web, it appears that they use DigitalOcean. Make of that what you will.

Pic related.

Librem Chat = Matrix.org rebranded

Librem Mail = K-9 Mail for Android rebranded + some shitty vendor lock-in server (no option to use own domain)

Librem VPN = PIA paid them, just whitelabelled PIA

Librem Social = Mastodon rebranded

People should host themselves and not use this shit.

All of these services can be hosted on an affordable VPS and you'll have total control.

Some servers are in Hetzner.de Falkenstein as well.

If you believe this you are retarded, what do you think they'll do when the TLAs come knocking?

Stop trusting promises, make sure you CAN'T be tracked instead.

>All of these services can be hosted on an affordable VPS and you'll have total control.

Won't your VPS company have more control since they own the hardware? They have physical access to your server. There's virtually unlimited ways for them to pwn you.

It's not as bad as using some AWS honey pot but it's far from total control.

On VPSes, host pwning your shit is very easy.

You should get a dedicated server for defense.

So brave:

>The debacle with @purism underscores this: it's not freedom when for-profit corporations are treating communities as free-as-in-money resources, avoiding their inconvenient and expensive community management responsibilities in the name of "freedom." It's not "freedom" when the only recourse for toxic behavior is to get a court order. It's not "freedom" when raw sewage is dumped into the river we draw water from.

>rebranded

Shame that they're going to the marketing crap scheme.

>People should host themselves and not use this shit.

Agreed. But most people are have their own field of work and simply don't want to change. And yes, I agree that in that case such people should't use their software if they can't even understand the basics.

Also, services aren't bad, imo all small towns should have their own tech dude who serve customers.

But people generally don't want to pay for such work because they were spoon fed with corporate Gratis services in exchange of their private data.

People around me still thing that their 4 year old computer is OLD because it's not brand new.

And when I show my rig that is 20 years old and goes faster than their "modern" hardware they are simply astonished.

Purism products likely aren't aimed at you.

You have the understanding to make choices for yourself. You don't need to be saved.

Purism seems to be targeted for the people who do care about privacy but are too addicted to convenience or simply aren't invested enough to do research on and learn 20 new products. That isn't to say their products can't benefit us (that phone looks to be a great balance of the apparent contradiction of smartphones and privacy) but it means you are able to take the phone and flash it with something better than PureOS, get a better VPN and self-host all you want.

> Encrypton

lol techfags btfo'd. Encrypton means shit when it's over the wire. Anyone in the middle can detect source and destination and their respected ports meaning your ISP or the US / Chinese governments can easily intercept your traffic and know where it's going (and possibly decrypt it if they coerce the other side to tell them how to decrypt it.

Only "safe" data is data not attached to any network.

>>1060695

So what is this autism? Are they seriously asking some random company (purism) to give them money so they can create a furfaggot safe space?

 No.1063008

>>1060706

No one cares that they know where it's going (if they can ever do so), only what it is and how to read it, dickhead.

Sending message over Tor = see message leave, encrypted, sent into a fucking hive of thousands of other messages, and you don't get to find out where it goes next because the next hive doesn't know who you are and tells you to fuck off...

Meanwhile you think:

>Sending letters in mail = open letter, read paper

Is a smarter idea...good luck encoding by hand and avoiding them simply getting into YOUR network to grab the encryption key(s).

there is no way to buy VPS in private and anonymous way

also, if you have VPS or dedicated server, you don't have physical security of the server, anyone (police or server owner) can steal data from it or plant malware
