I need advice. I have some old 7zip files that are protected by a password I no longer remember.

I looked into it, and it seems my only options would be to try and use free password cracking programs which are so over my head that getting them to work in the first place would be a miracle, OR actually risk buying something that might be a little more idiot proof.

What do?

I have made progress. I managed to get Kali Linux to work on Virtualbox and proceeded to use hashcat to begin the process.

Unfortunately after getting everything set up it seemed that the hash was too large for hashcat to deal with. Either I find a way to reduce its size or I will have to try again with JTR which was being a bit more dificult for me to get to work. This has been an interesting learning process. And I appreciate all the advice I can get.

I hope I can do it, and of course thank you for helping me.

I'm stuck, John the Ripper gives me a "7-Zip files without header encryption are *not* supported yet!" message.

And hashcat says the file "unfortunately can't be used with hashcat since the data length in this particular case is too long"

Do you think your password might be vulnerable to a dictionary attack? As in, was it more like Terry_Davis@127 or saklh(A*Suer? IF the former then you can try fcrackzip, if the latter then rarcrack but brute force takes a long time.
