I have been looking into learning Java to use lwjgl. I know C++ and have dabbled in SDL, but my aim is to start writing video games. Java is almost made for game development so it would be prefect for me. Should I aim for lwjgl or another game lib for java?

Yikes.
Go for it. There's large community and support structure for learning on this platform. I'd recommend using Kotlin instead of Java; its much less verbose and just generally a better language, but runs on the Java runtime. LWJGL is at least partially written in Kotlin, too.

What makes you say that? The focus on OOP? It's an interesting option for supporting as many platforms as possible, but what if your game is going to need some decently intensive calculations?

C++ with sfml makes game dev fun and easy. Basically takes all the boring shit out of opengl and makes it easy to make shit.
