Do you believe that an universal distro that suits everyone's taste can be made?

 No.1018227>>1018228

Sure why not. Sane defaults and make it customizable enough.

 No.1018228>>1018274 >>1018374

>>1018227

Basically Gentoo?

 No.1018254

No. Some people like me who can't be arsed with configuring shit will prefer Ubuntu. Other people who want to fine tune to even the low levels of their setup will prefer Arch or Gentoo. It's a matter of preference, but I wish everyone worked on a handful of distros instead of scattering developer power across a gorillion different projects.

 No.1018255>>1018259

There's CloverOS, which is essentially ez Gentoo. Like, really ez

 No.1018259

>>1018255

Yep. A deriative that just supplies the defaults.

Ubuntu without the bloat would be perfect.

 No.1018271

It's easier to make the people suit one distro than it is to make a distro that suits every person.

Some people don't like the slightly longer install time.

This _IS_ a valid reason for them, this is enough for them to not use Gentoo.

Others are scared of any distro that is a derivative of, or copied from, Gentoo.

To most people, Gentoo is scary and the hardest distro they have ever read a blog post about.

 No.1018279

Gentoo with one or more binhosts.

 No.1018283

people are kidding because of the meme but gentoo can be everything, from ultra lean with custom init and static /dev to poetteringware 3.11 for workgroups and everything in between. Of course you can do that to any system but gentoo is the only one I'm aware of where you can make the package manager also play nice with it and don't break everything next update.

 No.1018284>>1018317 >>1018364

>>1018274

I installed gentoo once, it took a day to setup/compile everything(!) The amount of time is the only reason I don't install it again

 No.1018317>>1018318

>>1018284

It's probably because you wanted to install stuff that probably won't even run on your old machine. Why even build KDE Plasma if your PC is going to handle it poorly?

Also, you can use a binhost (Clover OS has one), make your own binhost or run distcc on separate machine in order to speed it up.

 No.1018349

>>1018221 (OP)

Fuck no. Anything more than what I need is bloat. Anything less makes the distro insufficient.

 No.1018364>>1018374

newegg has 8 core Ryzen 1700x for $190 and it's not even on discount. The money on that sort of system is worth it if you get privacy and your own proper OS. Of course some (((intel))) user will come in here and tell you you should buy an Intel instead because it's 10% faster in the latest AAA game even though it has half as many cores.

 No.1018374

Not today, but maybe in the future. The main problem is that people have different needs. Gentoo guys like fuck all day long with configuring shit, and it doesn't even have an installer. Hopefully GuixSD will make things easier, cool bootstrapable builds they have. But even GuixSD wouldn't suit everyone's needs, because some people just want to turn on their computer and do their stuff, like Torvalds - for him only the kernel is important. Others just play proprietary games, use crapps and LARP.

>>1018228

>Basically Gentoo?

And no, it isn't Gentoo. This distro is too complicated for me. OpenRC init scripts are cancer, and there are bilions of config files. In GuixSD everything can be configured in one language and using a few files. Truly universal distro would be both powerfull and easy to use.

<spoiler>But if it suits your needs, good for you :)</spoiler>

AMD has PSP, it's the same shit.

If you wan't privacy, run ARM without Mali, or better - Libre Risc-V, which doesn't exist yet.
