I can boot from a live USB fine, so my laptop doesn't seem broken. I can also decrypt and mount both drives while booted from a live USB, and all the data is there. However when I try to boot, I enter the password to decrypt the OS and it freezes and won't progress. Any ideas about why it won't turn on?

this doesn't follow. You can mount and look at data on drives that, post a hugging on the order of your event, can be missing files, have garbage in important files, etc. Seen it on servers, especially with virtualization. rsync your data off. log the transfer. pay attention to errors. and then, try reinstalling and restoring your personal data from the rsync.

I assume the the OS is Linux and you're using Luks for full disk encryption. By OS login, do you mean in GRUB (boot disk encryption) or after grub (root disk encryption)? If root disk, your vmlinuz image got messed up since the whole system is running on it while your root device hasn't yet been mounted. You can try to rebuild it using mkinitcpio in a chroot from a live disk.

I started backing up the data on the drives and no errors yet, though I'm not that far into my data yet. Can I use rsync on individual directories

>>1005850

Thanks for the advice anon. Right on both accounts. It hangs on the root disk decryption. I will try rebuilding the vmlinuz image.

yeah of course. How are you using it? If you're not playing any games with multiple hard links (if you have incremental backups, multiple hard links are likely), just rsync -avP $some_dir $dest

if it's over a network, add a -z

My laptop? I program, do homework, and shitpost. No games. What do you mean by hard links? Isn't everything that's not a symlink a hard link?

 No.1005865>>1005873

use ln without -s. bam. you've got multiple hardlinks to the same inode. if you rsync that without -H, you'll get two separate files with the same content, not two separate links to the same file.

Damn, I suppose I should have been able to figure that one out by myself.
