Though I no longer think that Medichlorians are an inherently bad idea, it still fucking sucks that the Original Trilogy's true original theatrical versions(particularly A New Hope) are extremely hard to UNBELIEVABLY HARD if not impossible to find these days! Lucas went OVERBOARD as FUCK with the special edition VHS and laserdisc releases(ie Han not shooting first, and the stupid bonk noise) He and many at Lucasfilm convinced the NFR(National Film Registry) to accept a "specialized" edition instead of the original theatrical or 1981 re-shoot versions. Not only were many copies spliced and diced, some were destroyed. Thoughts?

They released the original versions on DVD on bonus discs back when they came out with the OT trilogy collection on DVD, didn’t they?

I wished they hadn’t changed the Han/Greedo showdown in ANH, and a few minor additions of CGI creatures -- in particular the performance at Jabba’s palace in RotJ, but that’s about it.

Even if they released the originals, I think they would need to do corrections to the audio & video -- a remaster.

with the exception of the silver screen edition (iirc they are working on acquiring reels of empire and jedi as well), the 06 DVDs, which are the 93 laserdisc releases, are the closest to the theatrical editions.

honestly, having seen both the 06 dvd and silver screen print, there's really not much difference except the silver screen clearly looks like it was made in the 70s, whereas the 06 dvd is cleaned up enough to look a bit more 80s/early 90s

tl;dr film color and grading is the only big difference, scenes are pretty much the exact same, so go with the 06 dvd release if you can find a torrent, or have hundreds of dollars to spend buying a physical set

06 DVD release is poor quality. Torrent the Despecialised editions. Very good fan restorations. Proper HD. ANH is quite different, especially Tatooine scenes. Also restores original emperor and cloud city backdrop to ESB, and original songs in ROTJ.

Most importantly of all, ANH opening crawl is simply "Star Wars". No Episode number.

I'm looking at a 1080 BD version on PTP right now that honestly looks like it's ACTUALLY the theatrical version, but I'd have to download it to verify (and it's almost 30GiB) so fuck that, I'll just give you the filenames

BTW, a 4K copy of ANH exists, it's sitting at the skywalker ranch, presumably to be released this year for the 40th anniversary.
