So what was this thing, and what was its role on the Shenzhou?

Discovery's writers wouldn't dare make it an android, but is it a robot, or is there a being underneath?

Is the helmet a medical necessity, or is it simply used to increase efficiency?

Is it Romulan tech acquired in the Earth-Romulan War? It reminds me a bit of the telepresence unit used by the Aenar in Enterprise season 4.

Is it a Breen? Their homeworld is thought to be reasonably close to Earth. Could the Breen have flirted with becoming members of the Federation before deciding to form their Confederacy? Or were they just interested in acting as spies?

Rampant speculation is welcome.

>Is it a Breen?

funny thing is when I was watching the episodes, my online trek buddy kept asking me if that was a Breen. Took me a while to notice her, the kept cutting away from her too much. But to answer your question, hey, if they redesigned the Klingons so much, why not the Breen. Though the problem here is the normies they hope will watch the show have no idea who the Breen actually are so why even bother. Though ofc that makes the justification of redesigning them easier, so whatever.

>but is it a robot, or is there a being underneath?

I'm guessing a proper humanoid, you can see her chin in some shots.

>Is the helmet a medical necessity, or is it simply used to increase efficiency?

I wanna say for efficiency, but I'm not 100% on that bc they didn't have her do much to justify having the helmet. Frankly, I agree with >>8106 and also think they just wanted someone with a cool helmet or someone had just seen a Daft Punk video and thought to put that in somehow.

>Is it Romulan tech acquired in the Earth-Romulan War?

I doubt the writers know what that is. But in case they do, no, I think not. Again, they just wanted a cool helmet lady.

I'm curious why the ship's name is on the helmet. Just in case it gets lost and you'll know who to return it to? It also seemed like she got killed (I don't remember all the details), so we'll probably never see her again, but I do wonder if we'll see the same tech on another person. And if they'll actually take time to explain it then.

There is absolutely no reason to think that they wouldn't be this stupid, but since it's apparently already dead I guess we'll never know. When they go to read alert you can see it's helmet light up with the RED ALERT sign, so my guess is it's some kind of robot.

The guy with the implants on the top of his head I think is human with some sort of cyberkinetic assistence either for piloting the ship (think enhanced digital interface such as what the cardassians used on DS9) or I think it may be like Geordis visor and it is used to stop some temporal lobe epilepsy or something. Definitley don't think he is an android. There is also a talking robot for about 4 seconds on the bridge which simply says "impossible" when the Klingon fleet warps and decloaks. It looks like a pretty archaic simple robot, not complex or sophisticated enough to resemble an artificial life form like Data or Lore. It does actually look like a Breen though.

Don't have a clue if that other guy is Bynar but tbh I think it is probably a new alien race and it sounds like they may also be some sort of endangered spieces as the guy talks about how their only purpose was to be hunted and destroyed, doesn't seem like the sort of civilization which would reach warp drive or anything like that so I think there will probably be a bit of a unique back story to him.

> He said his homeworld does not have food chains, that species there are either predator or prey, with nothing in the middle. Kelpiens, as prey, were hunted, bred, and farmed.

Which doesn't make sense as farm animals bred for food tend to be chunky, lots of meat.

He's all skin and bone, no way his genetic history involved being bred for food.

And that line about sensing death, because that's exactly what farm animals are bred for, right!?

This whole show has nothing but shitty aliens made up purely for some bullshit plot point or throwaway line of dialog that doesn't even pass a basic logical consistency check.

I think he's just speaking figuratively about the whole "sensing the coming of death" thing.

I do like the idea of an alien species that evolved from some kind of skitish prey animal, like a deer or a mouse, with the instincts that come with this, instead of the classic human style omnivore or the idiocy of a predatory warrior culture. Every continent except antarctica has developed warrior cultures on earth and humans only rarely eat the other humans we eat. That only aliens who are predators would do this is a silly notion in the extreme. If you have ever seen an angry bull, you have seen what peaceful and docile herbivores can do when riled up.

Sorry about the rant.

I think Saru is referring to his skittish and nervous nature as a prey species, when he says he has been bred to sense death. He's just being metaphorical.

No idea what he might be referring to when he talked about being bred for food though. Maybe Kelpian brain is a delicacy somewhere? But who would be stupid enough to go to all the trouble of breeding sentient cows for food? Doesn't human level intelligence and problem solving ability make it a pain in the neck to keep them under control? I can also only imagine that the rest of the galactic community would take a fairly dim view on anyone in their neighbourhood keeping sentient livestock, ethically speaking.

>"While I'm flattered for the opportunity, before we do that, we noticed that you happen to have farms full of bipedal lifeforms. Do those happen to be sapient perhaps?"

<"Of course! The flesh of the prey animal is sweetest when it most deeply understands the terror of death!"

>"I'm sorry but we're not okay with that. You're going to have to set your space cows free."

<The Ilwrath wiggles its mandibles in discomfort

<"But the flavor of terror is so good. Where will the prey go if not to be bred for feasting?"

>"We'll trade them for a planetwide supply of synthetic chemical fear."

<"Sounds like a deal, friend."

>The Fed rep is then sacrificed to the twin gods of deceit and malevolence

>The Kelpians are liberated and homeless

>The Feds feel smug and self righteous

>The Ilwrath are free to terrorize the galaxy

>Everyone wins

holy fuck you're retarded. I never said all predator species have 2 eyes pointing forward. I implied that exclusively prey species don't. There would never have been a need for them to adapt that way so they wouldnt have them unless they were once predators and went back to being exclusively prey so the eyes would be vestigal.

This Kelpien horse-man character is supposed to be exclusively prey. Unless his species used to be predators, then it makes no goddamn sense for his eyes to point forward.

https://encyclopediadramatica.rs/Laurelai

Basically Wesley "Laurelai" Bailey is tranny who is also a gov't snitch, a social justice nut very publicly involved with Heat Street's headcase Louise Mensch and her Russian hacking fantasy, is maybe also a legit rapist and is definitely a huge cow. Everytime there's a major piece of online drama that's cybersecurity or society related Wes seems to pop up. Not only has Wes gotten into the whole U.S. antifa thing (or at least tried to recently), but also was in Chanology and later was (conversely) an aGGro (attacking this very site during the later situation). Considering Wes' history and especially recently with the political activism as of late, having a show thump it's chest about it's "right on" agenda and having someone like that also mixed in as a side reference is a little bit jarring.

https://lolcow.wiki/wiki/Laurelai

>Laurelai's most infamous incident happened in January of 2015, when she and Dan Olson conspired to try to get 8chan taken down. The plan called for Laurelai to set up a honeypot IRC channel corresponding with the launch of an alleged child pornography board (/hebe/) on 8chan. Laurelai would "plant" said content in the hope of luring in actual pedophiles to the channel and board, which would allow Olson to, via archive postings and screencaps, make the argument that 8chan was home to Child Pornography and had to be shut down as a result.

Take a look at:

https://github.com/Laurelai/decompile-dump/blob/master/output/055A3421813CAF77E1387FF77B2E2E28/055A3421813CAF77E1387FF77B2E2E28.c

>dated Feb 14, 2011

The code is a decompile of the stuxnet worm that he or the hacker group he was affiliated had posted online.

The show creators snag this snippet of code from his decompile of the stuxnet worm because if you google it, it goes straight back to him. It's a direct and deliberate reference to him, a gamergate opposer and SJW shill that founded SJWiki.

Look at the dialogue surrounding the scene in question, the deliberate use of the term "lurker" preceding and following the display the code. It's a fucking taunt directed at chans.

As far as the other stuff, it's interesting to say the least. On the one hand the staff could have looked up "stuxnet source" and - well - the dialogue is just as bad here as it is everywhere else on this show. On the other hand Trek shows are usually somewhat careful with references. Anything is possible and the dialogue certainly is odd with the lurker stuff and all that. Just the fact that Wes is getting mentions at all is not positive.

If it wasn't for the "lurker" comments before and after showing the code, I'd stand by my original theory >>8899 that it was maybe a lower level CGI supervisor trying to slide something in past the producers, but the dialogue choice sounds like it was written exactly to emphasize the inclusion of this code as handpicked by the writers.

A) CBS basically owns Bethesda/Zenimax

B) Laurelai's public profile has gone up in recent years inexplicably even with a lolcow rap sheet longer than the source code for Windows 10, to the point where there's acknowledged work with traditional media

C) Imageboards have been targeted in the recent past by the same interests in traditional media, with boards conversely frustrating their efforts here and there (from Gawker to Paid Mods v1.0)

Can't take this mulatto seriously. She's also a fairly coarse race mix, it's difficult to believe that her brain is highly refined while her outer features are in transitional disarray.

Any background to why her name's Michael? Is she supposed to be transsex also, or is Michael just an occasional name for a girl? My guess was that it's the latter, that we're supposed to take Michael as a perfectly acceptable girl's name; but, also, that it's some idiotic writers board's notion of a way to subvert the viewer's white supremacist assumptions about binary gender. Like the same way you can't tell which race(s) it is, its sex is 15% uncertain. Really makes you think, goy! This is the sort-of substitute we're now getting for TOS's actually provocative philosophical quandaries or TNG's exploration of topics such as law and Shakespeare quotes ‒ not challenging just annoying.

It' to be edgy. Though there have been quite a lot of women named Michael, even though it's always been considered a man's name.

Apparently Brian Fuller (the former showrunner who got kicked off the project) is known for giving female characters male names. He's a SJW, so it's to be edgy or something.

When we know nothing about them, we can imagine that they are more interesting than the arrogant cunts like the main character or any of the other characters in the show.

Same reason Saru is so much more interesting than Michael. The most important thing he did in the 3rd episode was done off screen, so we can only guess at how he made the case for bringing a convict to salvage operation for retrieving top secret research materials.

I mean, bringing a convicted mutineer to help get all those secret projects that aren't even supposed to exist, knowledge about which could change the course of the entire war if anyone else found out about it, kind of projects, seems like an idea so insanely idiotic that surely they cut Saru arguing for this to keep him mysterious and make him seem smart, without having to actually try to come up with some kind of logic, any kind at all, that could make this seem like a non-retarded idea, somehow.

>bringing a convicted mutineer to help get all those secret projects that aren't even supposed to exist […] seems like an idea so insanely idiotic

Not necessarily. If a mutineer has a talent that could be used for a secret project, why not?

The main issue is that we keep getting told that "Michael is so awesome", "the best of Starfleet" but we actually never saw her do something "awesome" or worthy of being called the best of Starfleet.

>>8971

>Is she supposed to be transsex

No, she's a stronk black womyn.

Her name is Michael because like >>8973 said, Brian Fuller has a habit of giving male names to his female characters (see the character Georgia Lass in Dead Like Me, she's always refered as George).

Being a black woman is a special talent that makes you uniquely capable of retrieving top secret materials who's secrecy is a matter of state security?

How the fuck does that work?

AFAIK the details aren't really public. CBS asked Bryan Fuller to step down as showrunner last October. Officially, there was talk about how he had too many projects on his plate (and Discovery had already been suffering delays at that point), so he'd be returning his full attention to "American Gods". Some of his ideas got dropped, including "more heavily allegorical and complex story" points (read: commentary on the US election).

>What can we do to stick in their craw even more?

CBS is dependent on this being a lure to their streaming service, attacking their bottom line is the best way to go about that, that means presenting the decoded SJW messaging in such a way as normalfags can digest it, and also start dumping torrent links and file locker upload links ASAP all over normalfag ST outlets and encourage piracy over paid access, with the ultimate goal of getting people to tune out completely or bankrupt the show.

Why I do think that it's very concerning that Laurelai got a mention in the show, I don't think this will be a problem. It's on life support anyway; maybe about a dozen people signed up for All Access because of it and there's little in the way of confirmed toys and other merch and any possible second season is in 2019 at the very earliest. Netflix will NOT want to spend more money on this shit and I doubt Les Moonves will want to shell out 6-8 million an episode for something noone wants to see, propaganda or not.

I hope that's true, and if the reported Khan spin-off series is a fallback for this failing hard, they've anticipated the collapse.

Go ahead and create as much blowback regarding this incarnation though, it may ensure the next attempt at a Trek show is more faithful to the franchise than this load of shit.
