Would Uhura also be considered a "lead" character? I mean she wasn't like a redshirt
Geordi also had a ton of episodes devoted to him. If one could consider TNG having an ensemble cast he would definitely be a lead.
Of course there's Avery Brooks and there's no disputing the guy was a very positive black role model (he was basically designed to be one. Given he's a single father who takes care of his son despite being in the military. Isn't just "Picard but negro", has his own character and so forth.)
It's just more fashionable to stretch the truth and claim that something is done "first" when most people who are following this news probably have only seen the JJ Trek movies.

They were definitely supporting cast members, stars though they were. It's all down to billing.
Avery Brooks, however, was most definitely the HNIC of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. He had top billing, given that he was the commanding officer.
Now, if those shitwits had said "First black FEMALE lead," they'd be okey-dokey. Given how touchy Brooks is about being black, this could get interesting.

I said something about this earlier in the other STD thread, but I want to see Trekkies be drawn to the nu-Klingons while showing contempt for the Feds. It would be hilarious to hear the autistic screeching of the writers as the one thing keeping the show alive is the object of their loathing.
(From the article)
>There are people out there who seem to want Discovery to fail for some reason
Oh noes they're on to us! But in all seriousness how hard is this to understand? I want a good show to succeed, and a bad show to fail, and all signs point to this show being bad. If STD can pull out of the nose dive it looks like its in, then I'll sing its praises. I'm well aware that they know the "some people" are actual fans of Star Trek, and they know "some reason" is that it isn't really Star Trek, and it will be shit. I'm just making conversation.
>>7469
I'm currently working on watching TOS, only have seen TNG and DS9, and while I would allow them to make the claim that TNG had a "terrible" first season, it's clear manipulation on the part of the author to make it sound as though such a statement is true for other shows. For DS9 the nonarguments from the author come down to:
>It was different than other Trek shows
>Jadzia's character wasn't well established yet
If we are going to be serious about making a good or bad foundation for a show, it really boils down to this: How good are your characters in terms of depth and opportunity for storytelling, and how good is the mixture of these characters together? Writers can only fix these fundamental problems by either replacing/removing characters, or by providing major events (such as secrets from a character's past being written in) to change a character. Story events can usually be turned around fairly quickly, however writers are stuck with a group of characters usually through a whole season. So for STD, if we are being completely honest about assessing the quality of the show, boils down to how good the characters are, and what the writers can do with them.
