I want to talk about this guy. Specifically, his genetic retooling. The thrust of the show with his parents was pretty much that we should be angry with them for considering their kid defective and buying him a few upgrades.

But, all emotion aside, what does the Federation do with its tards? I've never seen one, and while the Feds seem to be all about the diversity when it comes to collecting aliens like pokemon, humanity itself seems confined to a very narrow spectrum of existence. I can see weirder humans out my window than I can on trek. What does the 24th century do with 30 year olds who can't tell a dog from a cat?

I don't know but that one episode with Geordie implies that they don't abort for even genetic or congenital disabilities.

Maybe severe genetic anomalies don't really pop up much anymore because Colonel Phillip Green was so successful in cleansing the gene pool.

Just put them in a retirement home for the disabled/retarded where a computer and volunteer staff can look after them.

Just because the federation doesn't have them put down don't mean they can all complete training in starfleet academy.

The real question you should be asking, is why isn't places like section 31 or starfleet HQ full of genetweaked superintellects?

Sure, eugenics war's and all that, but in a society made up of many different races, you will inevitably have some races being smarter or dumber than everyone else (Packled's for example) so why is there still such a stigma attached to genetically engineered people? And more interestingly, do all the member races of the federation share this sentiment, or do some allow it?

>The only reason the Federation's massively stupid policies can continue is because of the genetic cleansing that occurred during the Eugenics wars

I can believe it.

I'm pretty sure there's all sorts of ways to deal with it in utero. If I recall correctly, they went to a back-alley Khan-struction worker and paid extra for the "Flowers for Algernon" package. The problem wasn't that he was turned into a normal, the problem was that he was turned into a superhuman, which was a cause for concern in the past.

I think an interesting take on the series would be that genetic modification is extremely common among the elite in the federation, just well hidden and not discussed. I remember a reporter one time saying that it isn't just athletes that take performance enhancing drugs; a lot of CEOs and others take amphetamines and shit like that.

Yeah considering that section 31 is completely unofficial there's no good reason they're not genetically modified. If Bashir could hide it, a bunch of off-the-grid black ops can definitely hide it. As far as Fed elite being genetically modified, that seems less likely, simply on account of how uptight those assholes are. Plus, I can't imagine being a superhuman even helps a lot when it comes to politics. Science, medicine, combat, sports, sure, but being a superhuman doesn't get a guy votes.

Yeah, your co-workers are on adderall or ritalin and cranking out shit, wanna compete, get on the dope.

Microdosing with LSD is big in silicon valley also, and their are some pseudo-legal variants that you can get shipped straight to your home from "Research Chemical Companies". 1p-lsd is one of the current hot sellers, it doesn't meet the federal molecular definition of LSD, but the body converts it into LSD at around 60-70% the efficiency.
