I always see discussions about the best series, best captain, best ship, so I thought this would be an interesting new topic for debate.

So, how about it /strek/, who's the best CMO and why?

This. Aside from Phlox being more likeable than Polaski, Polaski was really just a failed attempt at a Female McCoy.

McCoy & Spock:

>"Damn it, Spock, Jim is putting his own life in danger! He's your captain, your friend, how can you be so heartless about this?"

>"Doctor, I am simply carrying out my duties to the ship and crew."

>"You're acting like a damned computer is what you're doing!"

Polaski & Data:

>"Data, you don't know anything about human competition. Why would you even care?"

>"Although I do not understand many aspects of human behavior, I have always aspired to be more human."

>"But you're just a silly computer. XXXDDDD"

McCoy & Kirk:

>"Jim, if your plan doesn't work, you could die. As your doctor I can't let you do this!"

>"Bones… if I don't do this… I may be condemning these aliens to death. I have to try!"

>"…Alright… but you had better come back, I wouldn't want to be stuck taking orders from Spock full-time."

Polaski & Picard:

>"Jean-Luc, this is a stupid idea."

>"I see no other way, doctor. Mr. Worf, target their engines, fire on my mark."

>"Don't say I didn't warn you, Captain. :////"

McCoy's background:

>After failing to save his father from a terminal illness, Dr. Leonard "Bones" McCoy chose to traverse the stars, lending aid where ever he can, putting on his shoulders the responsibility of safeguarding the welfare of the crew of the Enterprise, the flagship of the Federation. Throughout the series, Dr. McCoy serves as an advocate for humanity, and embodies many of the best qualities of the human race including compassion, integrity, loyalty, and duty.

Diana Muldaur, Pulaski, was a good character actress but they put her in the wrong role. She kinda gives off an unlikable arrogant vibe so she didn't stick with the audience like everyone else did, especially since they wrote her as hostile to Data. She'd had been better as a reoccurring baddy or an admiral or something.

McCoy obviously is the best.

Pulaski gets shit on, but character-wise she was great. She brought many things to TNG S2 that were sorely needed

>someone much more human on the ship, like the audience

>someone sterner

>someone to call out bullshit when she sees it

>someone who questioned Data's humanity, which helped turn Data into a fan favorite. Prior to "Elementary, Dear Data", he was almost as bad as Wesley

>also made Worf more likeable

As a kid, I hated her, because I was popping boners to Dr Crusher and Troi every week. But from a drama standpoint, she pretty much saved S2, and got TNG to S3 when it finally came together as a cohesive show.

First choice: McCoy, for obvious reasons.

Runner-up: Pulaski. Everyone hated pulaski but unlike all the other stronk idypendynt wymyn of colyr on trek she was actually believable. The actress did a good job towing the line between portrayals of competence, professionalism and smugness. The twist where she was a total cunt to picard because she was trying to hide her power level (admiration) for him was a nice touch. I found the anti-data angle to be really hamfisted and inconsistent with the other traits the character has.

If I had a medical condition I'd visit my old country doctor. If he wasn't available I'd go see Pulaski because there was a guarantee of no bullshit and no sugarcoating.

I liked the season 1 EMH (competent and appropriately smug given his level of expertise - no social graces because medical science is science, dammit, and decisions are life of death. ). It kills me that they made him into an obnoxious beta male late in season 1.

Phlox was just OK. Nothing to write home about I enjoyed the actor's portrayal of an eccentric and jovial gentleman that can be serious more than the character itself.

Bashir was terminally boring (except for his interactions with Garak) and Crusher was supremely annoying and insufferable and above all unprofessional (though it could be argued it's because Wesley is probably Picard's illegitimate autistic kid)

>At least the Captain hates him…

That was one thing I hated about the Jellico episode. Ronny Cox starts the first part being based as hell, but part 2 makes him into a total ass. I've always wondered if there were some Stewart contract negotiations going on at the time, because it looked like they were prepared to slide the based version of Jellico right on into the Captain's chair.

>Cox: I know, and I never saw him as an unlikable character. I think there were a lot of things that he did that were really important for that show. Having Troi put on a damn uniform? Give me a break! This is an officer on a ship and she’s running around with her boobs hanging out?

So based. I love Marina Sirtis' tits as much as the next guy, but he's absolutely correct about how stupid she looked on the bridge. Threw the whole dynamic off. And she always looked hot as hell in blue.

What exactly did Jellico do wrong in the second half?

Not cave into the cardies at the negotiations? If he had, the results would have been far worse than the feddies loosing one captain.

Did he push too hard to prepare the ship and crew for the eventuality of a war? At best, the Enterprise would have been the only warship on the frontlines if the shooting started. The problem here isn't that Jellico was too demanding, the problem was that picard had run the federations flagship like a luxury cruise liner for diplomats for years, which is why Jellico was sent to take over during the negotiations in the first place. To whip the ship into shape before the shooting could start.

Or do you find it unreasonable for Jellico not to let his pride get in the way of getting the best pilot he could for a crucial mission, by going to Riker?

Jellico is to date probably the only captain who has actually tried to run the Enterprise, any enterprise in the show, like an actual warship.

There was a change between the two episodes. Episode one shows Jellico to be a by-the-book, no nonsense type of leader. Episode two makes him subtly more petulant and not in control of the situation. It's been a while since I watched them, but I remember being shocked by how likeable he started out and how cringey he ended up.

Are you kidding? Kirk constantly put the Enterprise at risk by failing to follow simple protocols that Starfleet had in place to govern those situations. USN would have thrown Kirk out on his ass, and Spock with him for failure of first officer to check his captain. Khan only stands a chance of success of ambushing the Enterprise because Kirk disregards protocol to raise shields, do you see the command team of Jellico/Worf making that mistake?

Regarding Bashir… thought this was interesting.

>The most interesting stuff was regarding Siddig’s views on how in season 5 of Deep Space Nine the writer decided that his character was secretly genetically modified (in "Dr. Bashir, I Presume"). Siddig said he didn’t learn about the change in his character until the last minute:

>"I did it the only way that an actor can. I completely destroyed the lines that they gave me regarding the situation. Every time something came up that was to do with being kind of Data-esque -- I mean, I couldn’t get away from the fact – I thought I was being a Data, which is what they wanted to do, they wanted to switch the characters from all the shows, which they ended up doing with Voyager …Well, it was a bit cynical at the end of the day. But I just fluffed the lines; well I didn’t fluff them completely I literally pinned the lines on the back of someone’s shoulder once, reading them. I wasn’t bothered even to learn them. I just pinned them around the office as if they were lines needed for daily modification. And they got the message and dropped it kind of."
