Yup. I've never heard the full story, but I've read a couple of books where Brooks' reaction to it is downplayed enough that I reckon he must have gone full-Ferguson on their asses. I think that's why his character isn't fried in the show even though he fucks up doing the Allamarain; there were a certain amount of takes he was prepared to do and he bared his fangs when the director tried to go one take over Avery's line in the sand.

>What was different?

You know brief flashes on fucked up looking shit that flash on the screen for like a frame or two a time very quickly, well there was originally entire scenes of a hell orgy and other stuff in the film. Test audiences were a bunch of pussies and it was all cut.

http://www.craveonline.com/entertainment/1263775-heres-youll-never-get-event-horizon-directors-cut-sequel#/slide/1

>It was also notable for its shocking, rapid-fire depictions of Hell, which were culled from longer portions of the film. Talk had been rampant for years about a legendary “director’s cut” of Event Horizon, but in our recent Facebook Live Q&A with Paul W.S. Anderson, he revealed why it’ll never come out… even though Paramount, the studio behind Event Horizon, wanted to make it happen.

>“There was a lot more that was shot that isn’t in the movie,“ Paul W.S. Anderson confirmed. “But you’ll never see the messed up version because we made Event before the kind of DVD revolution. You know, DVD ushered in this era when you had to have additional footage, deleted scenes, things like that. There was no call for that back when we were just doing VHS cassettes and LaserDiscs.”

>You know brief flashes on fucked up looking shit that flash on the screen for like a frame or two a time very quickly, well there was originally entire scenes of a hell orgy and other stuff in the film. Test audiences were a bunch of pussies and it was all cut.

I cannot find it in my heart to blame them, given my memories of the flashes. It might have been more effective that way, anyway, as I can't remember details but I DO remember being profoundly disturbed (in a good way; mission accomplished on their end) as I realized a switcheroo had been perpetrated and what had been an Alien sort of movie had suddenly become Hellraiser. The flashes hitting one by one in rapid fire succession made sure that you couldn't find your balance with one before the next one was coring your brain.

Thanks for the links.

>Portions of the deleted scenes were included as bonus features on the 2006 DVD release. Unfortunately, they were sourced from poor quality footage, and had editor's marks visible in various places. Supposedly, the cut scenes were found in, of all places, a Transylvanian salt mine, but they had deteriorated beyond repair.

>Transylvanian salt mine

Transylvanian is the strange part, but old salt mines make good underground storage for film archives. Archival companies buy them up because they have a controlled temperature, low humidity, low fire risk. A stable environment with little overhead compared to the infrastructure required to setup a standard industrial building to maintain the same environmental controls.

It really is more effective that way, because that jarring effect makes it creepier and at least startling, but it's not merely "a cat jumped" startling, but startling with really weird gross stuff. The longer they show something, the more it gives the audience time to get used to it.

that's what i was afraid of. on the other hand, it looks really short - maybe as few as 20 frames for truffle shuffle clip. Just doing the banner would be easier because it's so low res that i could get by with quick and dirty shooping, but with stuff like this i like to also a full-size version.

I watched it and I can't really agree with Mike's opinion on Discovery. Discovery is trying something different, but they're not even remotely attempting to make it still feel like Star Trek. While The Orville may have reused concepts from other Star Trek series, I don't mind it because it at least feels like Star Trek should.

441e0e (2) No.15865>>15866

>>15864

I find Mike's opinion interesting because he fully admits he doesn't see the show as Star Trek, yet he still likes it. I guess he's sort of divorced himself from the Trek part of the show to even have a chance of enjoying it. I understand his point of it trying something new even if I don't agree with it (it's still basically GoT: IN SPACE) and I get why he'd find The Orville not bad, but lacking in that regard. Still, it was curious to hear how he could love the show very easily, but is almost holding back, since all it would do is remind him of the good olf days of Trek. That to me is very telling of what is rotten in modern Trek. I also think Mike should finish watching The Orville, I felt it was growing more comfortable in its skin by the end there and I agree with Rich that it will hopefully learn what to do better in season 2.

c544ce (3) No.15866

Yeah, I can understand why Mike has problems with The Orville, but I hope he gives it another chance.

>Still, it was curious to hear how he could love the show very easily, but is almost holding back, since all it would do is remind him of the good olf days of Trek. That to me is very telling of what is rotten in modern Trek.

The fact that he brought up the theory of STD being in the mirror universe makes me think he's really struggling to reconcile it STD on its own and STD as a Star Trek show.

f26433 (2) No.15867>>15873

>>15864

I don't think STD is doing anything different though. Different to old Star Trek, maybe, but that's because it's conforming to the standard of every current TV show. It actually would have been more bold and interesting to stand against the crowd by just making a classic style Star Trek series. What was the last show like that? Stargate Atlantis? That show ended nine years ago.

cd248d (2) No.15868>>15894 >>15895

I gotta be honest, Mike's idea for the mid-season twist is actually pretty damn good and would even make me interested in watching the show. I'd pirate it, but I'd probably watch it.

That's what I meant by 'different'. I think Mike likes the idea of a Star Trek that isn't in line with the ideals of your average Star Trek series despite knowing that at that point, it isn't really Star Trek. But I'd rather have classic-style Star Trek to make me feel good after all the stupid shit going on in the world.

0b3c7c (1) No.15891>>15895 >>15899

>>15870

I didn't take it that way at all. It sounded to me more like criticism for their shoving in random diversity and plugging Star Trek as a totally progressive show, then pointing out that if you go back and look at it through the years, they really only took little baby steps along the way and never really rocked the boat that much. Some big things like Kirk kissing Uhura, sure, but Trek isn't as progressive as some leftists like to portray it, which is why they included some clips of women in TOS. And that brings up the contradiction that STD is supposed to be ten years before TOS, and yet there's women captains and the gaaaaaaays and whatever.

Honestly, the fact that they spent maybe five minutes talking about STD in a 40-minute review says a lot.

I love that. People have been asking them to give their opinion on The Orville in more detail for a while now and they just do it in the middle of a STD review and still manage to spend more time on it. Hell, despite what Mike eventually said, they still manage to make The Orville look more appealing. You can see that reflected in the comments as well, most people shit on STD so much.

>>15868

yup, it's actually a theory I've seen in other places as well halfchan's /trek/, for instance. I don't know if it'd make the show better since we don't know what they'd do with the setup, but it would explain a bunch of things (tho I do think the MU was never as edgy as (in this theory) STD's MU, but whatever, it's a mess anyway).

I would argue Mike was just pointing out how people liked to praise the show for being "progressive" when it really wasn't all things considered. If you've watched Mike in any BotW episode he's usually the first to make fun of this shit. If you watch their latest nerd crew he does a similar thig where he points out how "diverse" the cast for the new Star Wars film while highlighting how every fucking director has been white. Basically pointing out their hypocrisy. I don't doubt the RLM crew probably more liberal than conservative, but they know how to keep that shit out of their episodes and are usually humble enough to keep that in mind.

Your job was to get completely and utterly pissfaced?

a06036 (4) No.23300>>23302 >>23364

>>23299

Well, that specifically wasn't my job, but my boss fully supported me doing it. His friends would stop by and be like, "there's something for you in the bathroom." I'd go in there and they're be a line a coke. The boss would come down from his apt and bring me some beers. After my shift I'd take a klonopin to get to sleep, then wake up and do it all again. This was at a shitty motel.

There was this one time my bro/coworker's knee or something was hurting, so the boss gave him a small bottle of decent whiskey to drink during his shift. One of the tenants had tipped him with an OP 80, which is a massive dose of time released oxycontin. He split it in half and took the big half. Then he started drinking. He polished off the whiskey, then in a fit of drunken idiocy, took the other half even though I tried to talk him out of it.

He. Got. Fucked. Up.

Later, I forget why, he went into the back office to do something, and dropped something while sitting in the office chair. Instead of standing up and then picking it up normally, he tried to reach it while sitting, tumbling out of the chair, and completely fucking his already achy knee up in the process. The fall was so loud it woke up the boss, who lived in an apartment upstairs. The boss came down to see what was going on, and my bro proceeded to cuss him out and tell him to, "Go the fuck back to sleep," or some other inappropriate shit along those lines. After his shift ends, he's still absolutely fucked up, and won't let me give him a ride home. He takes off walking while I'm in the bathroom, and I go chasing after him in my car. He's walking past a large parking lot, and I whip in and step out of the car, trying to reason with him to let me give him a ride. He pulls his fucking pistol on me. Right there in broad fucking daylight, standing on the sidewalk along a major thoroughfare. Luckily it was still relatively early and there was miraculously no one on the street yet. I argued with a drunk/high guy pointing a loaded gun at me. I forget what exactly I said, but at one point he just sighed and said, "Logical as usual, Mr. Spock," put his gun away, and got in the car and let me give him a ride home.

The craziest part is that this man shitposts among us on this very board almost every day.

>Is he the Dukatposter?

Indeed, when on an anonymous message board it is best to assume that every *poster is literally a single individual and it is entirely appropriate to re-direct the thread to account for their crimes. Otherwise, shit you don't like or understand might become one of those meemee's that the deplorables are using to bring back literally Hitler. If I could do a reverse time-skip and confront whoever keeps posting those frog pictures all over the damn place, I'd admonish them strongly and ask them if they wouldn't rather post something constructive instead.

4c1542 (4) No.23329>>23334

Not all Dukatposters are made alike, anon. Like our other anon implied, there are Dukatposters, and there is the Dukatposter, the one whose posts perfectly emulate the essence and raw masculinity of Gul Dukat. Even if it's multiple people, together they form the phantasm that is the Dukatposter.

dab4fd (3) No.23334>>23335

>>23329

i see. we shouldn't be afraid to coin a verb, then. In other words, perhaps it's a problem that a wee bit of capitalization can fix. There is dukatposting done by dukatposters and then The Dukatposter, who manifested and expressed perfect dukatposting and whose archetypal form exists as the aspirational ideal

dab4fd (3) No.23335

(cont.) also, most anons would have figured it out, but the verb in this case would be dukatpost.

There's been quite a bit of unwarranted and frankly inappropriate low-iq hostility towards autism and effortposting lately on /strek/ and message boards in general so any chance we the aspiring swoly get get to maximize the tryhard, we should take it.
