I watched it and I can't really agree with Mike's opinion on Discovery. Discovery is trying something different, but they're not even remotely attempting to make it still feel like Star Trek. While The Orville may have reused concepts from other Star Trek series, I don't mind it because it at least feels like Star Trek should.

I find Mike's opinion interesting because he fully admits he doesn't see the show as Star Trek, yet he still likes it. I guess he's sort of divorced himself from the Trek part of the show to even have a chance of enjoying it. I understand his point of it trying something new even if I don't agree with it (it's still basically GoT: IN SPACE) and I get why he'd find The Orville not bad, but lacking in that regard. Still, it was curious to hear how he could love the show very easily, but is almost holding back, since all it would do is remind him of the good olf days of Trek. I think Mike likes the idea of a Star Trek that isn't in line with the ideals of your average Star Trek series despite knowing that at that point, it isn't really Star Trek. It sounded to me more like criticism for their shoving in random diversity and plugging Star Trek as a totally progressive show, then pointing out that if you go back and look at it through the years, they really only took little baby steps along the way and never really rocked the boat that much. Some big things like Kirk kissing Uhura, sure, but Trek isn't as progressive as some leftists like to portray it, which is why they included some clips of women in TOS. And that brings up the contradiction that STD is supposed to be ten years before TOS, and yet there's women captains and the gaaaaaaays and whatever.

People have been asking them to give their opinion on The Orville in more detail for a while now and they just do it in the middle of a STD review and still manage to spend more time on it.
