Pharma has no pricing power. They get paid what medicare decides to pay them. Private insurers all use medicare pricing as the basis for what they reimburse. The secret/scam to the whole thing is big pharma gets a vote on the committees that set the price.
This isn't illegal in anyway. This is how the system is designed. They can effectively kill smaller competitor drugs in the reimbursement committees even after they get approval. This process is how virtually everything in healthcare gets priced.
This is why Big Pharma dumps cash on both parties. The system is perfect for them. They don't want a change. It makes no difference if private insurers or a national insurer is the payer.
Insurance companies don't care how much health care costs. State insurance boards cap their profits at a fixed % of the premiums they collect. Higher premiums mean a bigger float and a bigger piece of the action. As long as individuals aren't priced out of the market, the price makes zero difference. Demand for healthcare is so inelastic its nearly impossible to contain costs.
The entire public/private obamacare debate of who is paying for healthcare was the wrong question to ask. The right question is how on earth do these prices get set. The answer to that lies in byzantine CMS rulebooks that no one outside of the industry understand. They've even got their own ALJ court system that prevents a federal court from taking jurisdiction if you want to challenge any of the pricing decisions.
I would love to have a venue to discuss this without fear of reprisal.

I notice that the health business - pharma, CDC, medical - is being hit by a series of scandals OTHER THAN HIDING CURES. This is good because it will raise suspicions of the whole industry, and when information about suppressed cures comes out, it will not be such a big shock.
I am NOT a fan of the relese the cures memes. I think they are weak, show no creativity, and if they had been done well, they would have been too big of a shock.
Far better to have memes that focus on very specific things, a doctor who was murdered after certain research discoveries, a pharma company making big bucks for medicines that does not cure, and spends nothing looking for an actual cure, a specific resignation and why, red cross blood issues, etc, etc, etc. The way to make a meme campaign is to have a series of things. It needs to work like classical music (listen to some and learn) where one instrument after another joins in at time intervals and the music build and builds until it is a wall of sound that crashes, into very quiet melodies that give you time to catch your breath and think.
