I'm wondering if it started with the Hans Christian Anderson book. Karen was an orphan, she wore the red shoes to church for communion, where the priest wasn't happy. She then ran through the woods, getting cut up and bruised, to end up at an executioner's house. Did Anderson write this after seeing the truth?
