>But by trying to get them "right," they slave their story to the canon…and the terrible developments it's had.
Considering that those later canon developments did not realistically follow from Faust-era canon I do not think that getting the characters spot-on has that effect at all. In fact, writing the characters as they were precludes some of those shoehorned plot devices. "You've been kind for far too long" Fluttershy and "that big dumb meany" Discord being besties? Doesn't make a damn lick of sense for the characters, so writing them as they were means not making them best friends. That's just one example, and I don't think we even need to mention Twilight.
>If you're trying to set your story in season one, can you really ignore Twilight having a brother, even though it wasn't revealed until later? What about Fluttershy's brother? Can you REALLY write a story where the Crusaders get their cutie marks, when we've seen how that happens, without it feeling autistic as hell?
Why the hell not? It would be less than a fraction as autistic as most of the shit out there. Besides, how is religiously adhering to every stupid mandate that Hasbro suits shoved down show creators' throats any less autistic?
