Lily and her two floral friends were the kind of oddball characters that one might find in an oddball small town. The stakes are a bit too high and Ponyville is a bit too big now for their particular brand of gags to work anymore.
You know, it would have been funny for them to be a part of some kind of support group with Fluttershy, or maybe it could be like a concerned citizens' league dedicated to pointing out the tremendous dangers posed to ponykind by various every day things like squeaky fence hinges and clogged gutters.
