With the show's quality being so inconsistent would it be worth making a list of every episode rated as either, dogshit, bad, eh, good or really good based on a general consensus?

>inb4 form your own opinions

I can't think of any episodes which I thought were good, but the hivemind thought were bad.

f03ef8 (1) No.294087

I haven't watched in a damn long while, so I'd say yeah, as I would love to know what's worth bothering with

I stopped watching a fair ways back, though. 'Least season 3. Briefly watched a few newer episodes, notably griffonstone and the gabby bit, and both of those further drove things down for me.

Mostly because it just seemed so terribly forced. Used to be they seemed to care about the worldbuilding.

'Least the first one netted us best girl.

"The Crystal Empire" is a difficult episode for me to rate. On the one hand it was terrible, an attrocious mix of McCarthy's rail-jumping and studio meddling. Like the rest of Season Three it marked an absurd departure from the established universe. The villain was straight out of DeviantArt. The Crystal Empire itself was an obvious toy commercial. It marked the return of the world-breaking and utterly vapid Princess Cadence and Shining Armor. Spike "saving the Crystal Empire" was just him falling off a building like a klutz.

On the other hand, holy shit was it funny. Sombra was so ridiculous with his "SLAAAAAAAAVESSSS" and "CRYSSSSSSTALLLLLLSSSSSS" that it was difficult not to giggle whenever he was on-screen, whether in his Donut Steel form or as the smoke monster from Lost. Shining Armor tossing his sick wife off the balcony is possibly the funniest thing that has ever happened on the show especially because they played it completely straight. Horn Herpes was endlessly amusing. Rainbow Dash straight-up abducted some random little girl like the gay pedo that she is. It was a goddamned gut-buster. Seriously, rewatch that episode, and tell us that it didn't send your sides into orbit. There were even a few intentionally funny bits.

As a bonus, it even has the single shippiest line in series history: "But good things are better when they're a rarity."

b7d74c (1) No.294109

Same, even the "bad" episodes are watchable if you turn your brain off. I tend to watch more for the character interactions than the overall plot though, so that might be why.

AND MOTHERFUCKING FRIENDSHIP IS MAGIC JUST MEH

Are questionable. I didnt even bother going past season 3. Season 4 was sort of ok and after that all seasons have 5 good episodes at best, the other 17-ish range from literally nothing happened, to we already did this 2 seasons ago, and just fucking painful to watch

While we're on topic, why there's so many people saying fim was bad? It embodies everything the show should be

I should make a decent 1 to 10 scale with all episodes soon. This is a good basis. We discuss it, reach consensus and leave it for posterity

Yeah, I suppose I could see that. I rated Crystal Empire as dogshit mostly because it was such a departure from the first two seasons, and I remember how weird and unsatisfying it felt after waiting through the hiatus and getting all hyped up for a new season. A lot of the episodes where I departed from the dogshit-really good axis are the ones that are difficult for me to rate. For example, "The Cart Before the Ponies" is a pretty shit episode objectively, but it's hard to be objective when Cheerilee keeps making your nose bleed.

I can see the arguments that could be made for all of the other episodes you posted, but please tell me why in the world "Owl's Well That Ends Well" should not be considered a steaming pile of rancid dogshit.

Because I liked it. But really I dont think it's complete dogshit, maybe just a 5/10 but I think it's ok

I think you're in the minority there, then. People didn't even like that episode when it first came out, and that was back when autistic hugbox levels were really starting to spiral out of control. The Owl was stupid and unnecessary, Spike was dumber than usual, and the whole thing was poorly written.

But, I suppose coming to a consensus is the point of this thread. What do other anons think?

41d7e5 (2) No.294115>>294119

>>294111

Personally I'm not a fan of Crystal Empire.

The place has been cursed in the show, and every single episode set there has been unmitigated dogshit.

Sombra was described as this big scary baddie, but he was utterly moronic. He hides the one thing that can kill him, in the first place anyone would look for clues to where it might be hidden, his personal chambers, at the top of a tower with open doors in every direction with the heart sitting in the middle of the room in plain view.

The only way he could have done a worse job of hiding it would be to leave it in plaza where it normally was.

He was no threat in any way to anyone. Even when he had Shining Armor at his mercy all he did was give him horn herpes. No brainwashing, no enslaving, no holding the guy hostage, no using him as leverage to force the ponies into letting him into the town. He just let him go.

The only humor I found was cringe, and I don't like cringe.

Also, wasn't RD manhandling fillies from Games Ponies Play? The episode where the mane 6 learned about why it pays to bribe people in power into giving you favours?

>>294114

It was Rancid Dogshit.

Spike spend the entire episode acting like a retard, being neglected by his "parent" and in the end he had to apologise for Twilight never noticing the problem…

Also, fuck that owl, that one joke wasn't funny the first 10 times you used it, nor the dozens of times since, stop trying to make it into a running gag.

e3b4e7 (1) No.294117

>that was back when autistic hugbox levels were really starting to spiral out of control

Oh no, it was well before that happened. Remember that people back then used to bitch about Cutie Mark Crusaders episodes just because they took screen time away from the Six. The hugbox did not really get going until mid-way through Season Two right after Derpy spoke.

f921cc (2) No.294118>>294161

>>294111

The worst thing about "The Cart Before the Ponies" was that it felt like a TV-Y7 kids show. It was relentlessly stupid. Apart from that, though, there were good things about it. Cheerileader was indeed surprisingly… appealing. The world needs more Cheerleader Cheerilee porn. The cart designs were fun. I even liked the song.

f921cc (2) No.294119>>294122 >>294161

>Spike spend the entire episode acting like a retard, being neglected by his "parent"

Spike is always like that. The only good Spike episode had him turn into a huge monster for half of it.

41d7e5 (2) No.294122>>294124

>Spike is always like that.

Only in spike centric episodes. The rest of the time he's usually the sane voice in the room. This is why its so jarring when the episode presents him like a complete moron.

>The rest of the time he's usually the sane voice in the room.

I keep seeing people post that, but I never see it in the actual show. Can you recall any specific examples? I can think of a lot of episodes where all he did was say stupid things.

Looking down the episode list the only times that I can recall Spike being reasonable are in "Boast Busters" when he admonised Snips and Snails for liking Trixie, "Lesson Zero" where it would have been difficult to be less reasonable than Twilight (that episode ended with everyone laughing at him), and maybe "The Best Night Ever" for his plan to spend the party together. I do not remember the later seasons as well, because I have not been as keen to rewatch them. Maybe there are more examples there.

literally every character was PAINFULLY stupid

one of the plot archetypes I absolutely DESPISE in TV shows is the whole "the only reason this misunderstanding has escalated this far is because you kept your idiot mouth shut during the 5 entire separate opportunities you could have easily escaped this situation with zero conflict had you just explained the fucking problem you useless idiot"

the worst part is how those "opportunities" are specifically written to highlight and amplify how the problem could be fixed by just opening your fucking mouth

it relies on secondhand embarrassment on behalf of the viewer and that is by FAR the worst plot device out of all the cliche episode plots

>>294119

I just had a flashback to the times of all the welovefine t-shirts making godzilla poster parodies and the countless autistic memes relating to the episode of the week's main subject, and somehow I managed to simultaneously cringe while also reminiscing longingly.

idk why but I remember being entertained a lot by the humor in Baby Cakes. Haven't watched it in years though, who knows

also, it seems like the general rating is something along the lines of

S1 and 2 are a lot of pure gold with the occasional shitstain

S3 is mostly garbage with a couple great eps (invert of S1/2)

S4 is this weird back and forth whiplash of good/trash/good/trash

S5 is like a 3:5 ratio of good : bad

S6 was actually pretty good mostly, has lost the slice-of-lifeiness and coziness of S1/2 (pic related) but for simple entertainment factor it's pretty up there

S7 so far just feels like more of the same as S6 (not a bad thing)

so really the show is in a pretty good place right now, the true "Dark Ages" were pretty much the twilicorn times and a bit after, and the show wasn't even complete garbage, there was just a noticeable change in creative direction and a much higher ratio of bad to good eps for a while. Not a good combo for all the cynicists and edgelords around here ;)

frankly I feel like glimmer would be an excellent character for morals, actual feels, and plenty of character interaction comedy (hamfisted retribution aside), the writers just utterly neglect and ignore her and favor the mane 6, whose flaws have all been basically fixed 3 times over so now they're just rehashing the same shit morals or inventing arbitrary new problems that never existed before.

So yes, I actually WANTED glimmer to be a mane7 and steal the show, I just knew the writers wouldn't be able to pull it off well - and they didn't. So I'm not surprised at all, just sad.

anyway tl;dr show's still good, just a lot of fucking wasted potential

a7fb66 (1) No.294172>>294196

>>294162

>there was just a noticeable change in creative direction

It was not even a change in direction so much as it was a loss of any sense of direction at all. It is still unclear whether or not they had any plan at all for the breaks in the established universe that they created. I mean, Luna's dreamwalking made her into the narrative equivalent of the Wonder Twins, but what was the rest of that shit supposed to do? What was the plan behind the introduction of Cadence and the Crystal Empire? Okay, we know that one was to sell new toys. Why free Discord? Just because we liked him in The Return of Harmony? That's great and all, but that sort of thing changes the universe in ways that should be planned for. He needs a role. Why make Twilight a princess unless the plan was to radically change her role in the series? You can't just give the main character a crown and not completely alter her life. She is an aristocrat; she is not a neurotic librarian anymore. What did they expect to accomplish with any of it? Did they ever even have a plan?

0e8330 (3) No.294196

>>294172

all of these Big Important Decisions are mostly either obvious toy-bait or fan-pandering.

which, yeah, is pretty shit, but there's nothing we can do about the toybait and the fan-pandering wouldn't be all that bad on its own (frankly I don't mind discord being relevant occasionally).

Lauren Faust was concerned with telling a coherent story and building a coherent universe that had like, I dunno, morals and feminism and shit. McCarthy seems like she's just letting Jewsus take the wheel and driving the show right into capitalist hell

but honestly I still enjoy a lot of the newer episodes, mostly just for the comedy and general situational amusement. I would definitely prefer S1/2's direction over the aimless confusion of wasted potential we have now, but the show is at least still USUALLY entertaining. When the writers aren't being incompetent buffoons, at least (see: kart race episode).
