MAUD! Episodes are always better with a little Maud in them, and this one doesn't seem any different. Written by Nick Confalone, who's had a few solid episodes behind him (as well a previous Pie Family Shenanigans Episode - Heathbreakers), we find the deadpan rockfiddler possibly settling down in Ponyville. While Pinkie may be determined to show that there's more than just rock, maybe just rocks is all she needs.
I should also point out that this episode is the 147th overall. Not long now until the big One-Five-Oh which, barring any schedule changes, should be Parental Glideance, the episode that is setting up to introduce Rainbow Dash's parents. Should be a doozy.
Meanwhile, enjoy your rocks!

Non status quo: Maud stays in ponyville and we are subjected to even fucking more of her boring shit in future episodes.
Status quo: She doesn't move to ponyville, episode was pointless.
God I hate this shitty character.

She is good for exactly one joke. Why would anyone want to see episode after episode centred around that same fucking joke. It was barely worth a chuckle the first time you made that joke, making it hundreds of times more isn't improving it!

On the positive side, having Maud around would give the Five someone new to interact with, which they need, since apparently having them learn to be friends with Starlight Glimmer is not part of the plan. Why is that not part of the plan again?

Sure there are some criticisms that seems fair like in the first episode the whole ark of finding what to do with Glimmer was bullshit because nothing happened, everything stayed the same, but I'd still have to say the pones are doing cute things in that episode. And in this episode sure Pinkie is annoying but when was the last time she wasn't written like that but the other pones are still cute.

I dunno what to say about the episode, as my feelings on it are rather nuanced.
Lets start with the bad. Pinkie Pie. Even then, aside from the challenge accepted point at the very start, she was far more tolerable than usual. I think this comes straight from the writers knowing that her being in a whole episode would require her to be paced out and toned down reference humor for some mild slapstick. It works, as she isn't anywhere near as bad as she could be given her personality and the roll shes filling. This is really just like saying 'this is the best kind of cringe comedy' to anyone with standards and hates cringe comedy, if its preforming as well as possible it will simply not get its stink on the other aspects of what is going on.
This downer really does make for a problem as the rest of the episode was S tier. Absolutely amazing pacing, use of characters, interactions and morals.
Starlight becoming more fleshed out and being given some development on her own rather than 'friendship lesson' and while they couldn't resist making two 'she was evil' jokes in the episode, they both worked pretty well. Hopefully they wean themselves off this running gag on a high note before it's completely run into the ground though.
Maud became an actual character. Which was nice.
The moral, as hamfisted as it was, at least worked. But really it was just the Maud/Starlight interactions that stole the show. The dialogue was on point and it was actually very entertaining to see the two characters develop what felt like a genuine friendship.

SO it looks like Treehouse is going ahead with it's schedule of airing episodes ahead of Discovery Family. This obviously causes issues to things like the weekly sticky much like the Tiny Pop bullshit did last year. As a result, feel free to make a thread discussing episodes that are being aired in advance. These stickies will continue to follow the "official" broadcast schedule on Discovery Family.

I disagree on Pinkie. She was back in full S4 mode. Worse than she had been in seasons.
Maud had no chemistry with anyone. The writers where still trying to tell that one same joke they always are with her and it still hasn't gotten any funnier in the constant retelling.
She is still devoid of any other personality traits than being devoid of personality.
She didn't have chemistry with Glimmer. The closest they got was "I like kites" with a reply of "cool" from a character who has never shown the slightest interest in anything not rocks. That's not chemistry or friendly banter, that's an awkward introduction you use for when some stranger keeps talking to you on the bus.

Well I'd be lying if I said I didn't see your points. But it isn't like two people can disagree on something.
It isn't as though I enjoyed pinkie in any way whatsoever, so lets just put that to the side.
I do think that Maud at least expressing a little understanding of other ponies liking things was a bit of character development on her part. It might have just been the establishment that she's just a very calm personality rather than something being legitimately wrong with her, but it was something.
Their interactions are predicated on that bit of exposition where she explains that she actually does want friends, given that she's been kind of on her own aside from her family, but it is there. I might also be reading a bit to much into things, but that's just how I'm seeing things. Heck I thought the kite things was an interesting detail because unlike all the other cast trying to bond with Maud Starlight simply stated something that she enjoyed without any attempt to relate it to rocks, though I'm pretty sure Flutters tried something like that.
So, yeah, I can accept your view on the situation, I just don't share it.

RARITY'S LIFE WAS A LIE/10
Asides from some small things that happened and made me giggle, the episode was really bad. It's almost like the new writers don't know how to work with any of these characters. Glimmer showing up and becoming friends with Maud was too predictable and pretty much the only thing I didn't want to happen.
Derpy being happy about the free pizza was cute though.
At least it wasn't a "waifu stealer" kind of episode.

Oh, neat episode 5 came out.
Neat concept. It's kind of a good fit to have Fluttershy present a clear concept and even lay the law down on the design just to have contractors go behind her back.
Nice to see Fluttershy move past fully past the doormat she was at the beginning.

I was actually starting to like Pinkie after finding her insufferable for the longest time. This doesn't undo all of the progress, but it really didn't help it. They really wrote her teetering on the edge of completely insufferably annoying for this one, which I understand was kind of the point, but I feel like it goes against some of the character development of the past. She kinda learned to be less intrusive before if I'm not mistaken.
There were some cute moments, and generally I don't have huge gripes with the episode.

4: Cute/10. Honestly, in spite of Pinkie Pie's cringey behavior (which I fucking HATE) this is probably the episode I enjoyed most this season, which isn't saying much. Also, hard-hat flashlight magic focii.
5:
>Instead of knocking first, Fluttershy tries to push a door open with her head
>Fluttershy's character has actually developed
>Animals are flooding into Fauna's office at an unsustainable rate, ravenously consuming resources, and they're refusing to move back to the forest
>Fluttershy wants to build a safe zone for animals in the forest
Also,
>When the client pays these contractors to do something, they just do something else
>Construction is so shitty it falls over when a bear headbutts it
>Fluttershy actually stands up for her vision in front of her friends
>Rainbow Dash has enough strength to pile-drive a fucking log into the ground while flying

So, Lewis and Songco seem to have officially been promoted to story editors. I already like that the show seems to be about character interactions now. There has been a definite change in focus. The opener did not even have any rainbow princess battles. Even the babysitting episode with its focus on the most cancerous and shallow characters in the show managed to keep to the theme of characters learning how to deal with one another. The narrative is still a shitshow (no fixing that), but it looks like the old formula is making a comeback.
The episode itself had some solid jokes, like the bit with Maud telling Starlight about how to conquer Equestria with a rock. Pinkie Pie was annoying, but that was the whole point. Still, God do I miss scatterbraind, sensitive, off-beat Season One Pinkie Pie.
>>288564
If Lewis and Songco are not going to write episodes anymore, we can technically check the "all the talented writers leave" box. It's worth it if they can finally replace Rob Renzetti.
▶ f35aeb (71) No.288774
Well, ep 4 wasn't as shit as I thought it would be, in regards to Maud. But now it's guaranteed she'll be in even more episodes because she lives right next to Ponyville. At least her and Starlight were nice together. Starlight's bit about appreciating not being judged all the fucking time about her past was nice. I still wish they'd stop focusing episodes around her though.
But Christ, despite how much I usually like Pinkie, she was insufferable in this ep, even if it was relevant to the plot. God damn, her hair tied in a bun tho
