Around three years ago I switched over to spotify as my primary source of music. This came out of both convenience and necessity at the time since my phone had only 16GB of storage. However, lately I've started to notice that I have this fear of forgetting music. Like finding a really good band and then forgetting their name and not being able to find them - or in the case of spotify - having a favorite album or song get deleted and never being able to remember the name. It got to the point where i saved text files of my playlists in an attempt to archive the songs. Obviously this doesn't solve the solution of access but now that I have a stable income I'm starting to download or buy physical copies whenever I can. At first the convenience of streaming was appealing but now I hate it. Some of my fondest memories were going through thrift music stores for hours with friends. Fuck streaming.

Have you guys ever experienced this?

I think I understand what you're talking about. For me it's more about forgetting about the impact music can have when you can easily switch over to an entirely different artist on a whim. I can only think of two bands that I've stumbled upon and got into through Spotify: PiL and Echo & The Bunnymen; ToddInTheShadows has a better track record in that regard for fuck's sake. Every other band has been either word of mouth or looking up full albums on Youtube. Even pirating full discographies feels more satisfying/respectful to the artist than streaming.

spotify doesn't even have new underground stuff to find. most of the music i've found has come from the 2012-2015 bandcamp era of quality -and most times FREE- music. Almost everything I listen to now is essentially an extension of those bands. There was such a vibrant underground scene back then, man, i truly miss those days. I still try searching for new bands or genres but everyones just trying to be an indie rock band or some form of rapper.

Fuck man even soundcloud used to be pretty good. I remember seeing teamsesh's rise unfold in front of my eyes. remember when fifty grand was still a girl? lmao. her/his first few eps were fucking fantastic compared to the shit he makes now. they were called "I dont know why" and "join you" i recommend checking them out.

Idk man music used to fill me with such hope and inspiration but now it feels like a shadow of what it used to be. maybe im having an early boomer phase but the amount of quality releases in 2018 compared to 2016 is fucking embarrassing. that was such a good year for music.
