I was just a lonely tween when alternative ruled the airwaves. My entire exposure to the genre was through MTV and Q101. I was wanting to go back and see if I would have a new appreciation for the music now being an old blackpilled cynic.

I was hoping to check out more than just whatever I remember being promoted by the mainstream. I found this chart, there are a few things one there I haven't heard before, but a lot of it seems entry tier. I was hoping I could get some lesser known gems recommended.

I know it's not obscure per say but Mother Love Bone is mandatory listening.

I dunno but I really need to get back in Failure again.

Mr. Bungle and Faith No More aren't grunge but sort of alternative, early stuff was thrash metal Killing joke meets new wave.

Die Kreuzen - October File was an album I jammed just out of high school around 2001.

trying to think here. late 80s Dischord records was full of this stuff, Ignition, Dag Nasty, etc.

Killdozer and the Jesus Lizard too. major party foul on that list for forgetting them.

I'll come back to this thread.

cuckchan for some reason goes out of their way to inflate the role these bands played even though they were more of a fringe thing.

Anyway, I've brainstormed some records that we've been passing around as teens (typical alternative nation retards) in my circle of friends in the 90's yet aren't included in this chart. Maybe OP will like some of them:

Cracker - Kerosene Hat

Howlin Maggie - Honeysuckle Strange

Shudder to Think - Pony express record/50000 bc

Local H - As Good as dead

Spain - the blue moods of spain/she haunts my dreams

Shelter - Mantra

Brad or any Shawn Smith project

Biohazard - Urban Discipline

Hum - You'd prefer an astronaut

Social Distortion - white light, white heat, white trash

Pist.On - Number one (produced by Type O's keyboarder)

Life of Agony - Ugly/River runs red

The Notwist - Shrink

Pitchshifter - Infotainment/www.pitchshifter.com

Therapy? - Troublegum, Infernal Love, Semi Detatched

The Boo Radleys - Wake up

One Inch Punch - Tao of the one inch punch

James - Laid

HIM - Razorblade Romance

Hellacopters - Payin' the dues

Gluecifer - Ridin' the tiger

Backyard Babies - Total 13

Blood for Blood - Livin' in Exile

Turbonegro - Apocalypse Dudes

Helmet - Meantime

Acid Bath - Pagan terrorism tactics

Connels - Boylan Heights, One simple word

dEus - Ideal Crash

Motorpsycho - Angels and Demons at play

Blind Melon - same

Pothead - Learn to hypnotize

King's X - Dogman

Galactic Cowboys - same

Reef - Replenish/Glow

Ride - Nowhere/Going Blank again

Lemonheads - it's a shame about ray

Nada Surf - High/Low

Sebadoh - Harmacy

Frank Black - The cult of Ray

Teenage Fanclub - Bandwagonesque

Porno for Pyros

Quicksand - Manic Compression

Soul Coughing - Ruby Vroom

Tortoise - Millions now living will never die

Ash - 1977

Dog Eat Dog - All Boro Kings

Dub War - The Wrong side of beautiful

311 - 311 (i think they blew ass but "Down" had such substantial airplay that it would be dishonest to leave them out)

Orange 9mm - Driver not included

24/7 Spyz - Gumbo Milennium

Live - Secret Samadhi

I might add some more down the line

Thanks for such an extensive list. Just listened to Low by Cracker and it was a like a nostalgia rocket. One of those deeper cuts I've obviously listened to plenty of times, but had forgotten about. It also reminded me how prevalent heroin was a theme in.

When I think back on it, while I generally enjoyed the music, one common critique I had as a kid was that alternative tended to be to slow for my taste. I think it isn't uncommon for kids to prefer higher tempos and more noise. Looking back on it, I wonder if some of these alternative sensibilities would find a new audience currently due to all the people on opioids and promethazine.
