The idea of classic radio stations are good and all but they suffer from the same problem as their contemporary counterparts: they only play the most popular stuff. It's less like listening to an actual period radio station and more like listening to a greatest hits compilation with adverts in between, and eventually it gets annoying.

I want to know if there is any way to expressly find songs that never made it anywhere near the Top 20, yet were still very popular in their own right. Stuff like vid related. Only made it to #29 on the Billboard 100 in March 1985 and was the band's only hit after nearly getting cut from the album entirely at the record label's insistence as if you needed more proof that record labels are cancer. I mean fuck it, I'll read through old copies of Billboard if it's the only way but someone must've compiled this sort of thing elsewhere in the past, right?

Honestly, you answered your own question here. They have archives that are easy enough to navigate. Between Billboard chart archives and wading through countless compilation records put out as label promos, there really isn't anything out there like what you describe that I know of.

I agree, though, classic rock/pop stations are greatest hits trash. It would be an undertaking, but it would be possible to put together a playlist of hits through the years (or fuck even break down years and individual months if you want to really sperg out) that didn't stand the test of time/record company bullshit.
