Is there any other genre of music that is so self-absorbed, so desperate for validation, so pathetically obsessed with itself, so childish and image-conscious, so accepting of conformity and mediocrity as Punk? No. There isn’t. Because Punk is the fucking worst, at least in North America, and it needs to get right or go away forever.

Punk is a petulant little child that is wrought with an Oedipus complex, an oral fixation and a collective transference of identity issues (somehow stemming from a lack of identity) that causes it to be constantly screaming for attention. Punk ALWAYS needs a great big dick in its mouth to calm it down and stroke its melodramatic ego. Punk wants to be heard and seen. It wants to rebel; yet, if you look at it, it ironically shuns your gaze because you are not credible enough to soothe its aching teats. Punk wants to be different, but only within a strict set of guidelines. Punk is a tireless masochist. It suffers, it moans, it whines, it annoys; it is a culture of emasculation, castration, penis envy, communism, capitalism and third-grade intellectualism. Punk is weak, ill-formed, small-minded, an accident. Punk is modern man in search of a soul, yet it looks not to the heavens for answers — instead it stares in awe up its own gaping asshole, whispering with quivered lips, "You go, girl." Yes. YES. Punk is a cliche, a reproduction, derivative and fucking lame. Punk is an echo chamber.

Took the words right out of my mouth, wasn't the Sex Pistols also put together by their manager because he wanted his clothing line to sell. Proto-punk and post-punk are good genres but punk itself is for the most naive of faggots, I'd rather listen to Lil Pump or some other Soundcloud faggot.

This, does anyone listen to punk anymore, you're barking up a dead tree OP. It's a redundant genre with 3 chords a song on average that rightfully died out which is why post-punk happened as a successor that everyone hopped onto. If you like metal whatever but the majority, at least two-thirds, of the folks who like it are first-grade level counter-culture tryhards.

Stagnation, Pantera and Korn, jumping on various trends ranging from nu-metal to muh uber technical metal to name a few. There are of course metal records from 94 forwards that are pretty good, but not nearly to the heights of the giants. tbh a lot of the stagnation was setting in as early as 1991 or 1992 when the Swedeath clone bands were picking up, along with the other Studio Sunlight/Morrisound bands becoming more and more prominent. It was around '94 or so that capped the end of the death metal craze and black metal was the new hotness, along with the groove/nu/pseudo-industrial/(((progressive))) bands popping up that were basically glorified pop.

its like only the Japanese would be able to fuse Nazi, hair metal and road warrior aesthetic with gruff vocals, d-beats and power metal solos and punk riffs and make really good shit in the process. its a great tool to troll those poefaced US/Can/Euro that take themselves way too seriously that you internally cringe at their stage banter.

Mate, what you fail to understand is exactly why Punk came into existance, why it died, and what it was originally.

A little context for you:

Before Punk, there was Prog. Prog was fine, until it got so unbelieveably up its own arse that twats started putting 10 minuite long keyboard solos into every fucking track. It had stagnated and the people got bored and started playing classic rock songs with their own twist on it - Pub Rock. This gave people the idea of "Hey, seems like a laugh. I can do that, but I wanna sing about shit that bothers me." and so Punk was born.

Thing is, back in 1970s/80s England, we actually did have shit to complain about, what with Thatcher putting the working class out onto the street and the mountains of bin bags piling up in the middle of town because of strikes. Nobody could get a job and anyone with a job refused to do it because they were treated like shit, thanks to Maggie's labour laws.

The Sex Pistols basically started the Punk movement by accident because of one interview on a popular tv program - they told the interviewer he was a rude bastard (largely because one of them was off his face drunk) when he was, which make them the poster children for the "I'm not gonna keep quiet for you" feeling in youths, and thus history was made.

Only, once it became commercialy viable, it got a big following and became a 'look'. There was even a sketch on a popular comedy show about a guy going into a shop and asking for the "punk look" and coming out loking like the guy in OP's pic. Look at the Pistols in pic related, yeah they have coloured hair and alt clothing, but nothing to the absolute extreme, like in OP.

The thing is, that is what happened when people took Punk at surface level, ignoring the fact it's actually about disaffected people with real problems that just weren't being listened to, so they decided to shout about it. People only heard the volume, not what they were saying.

Jonny Rotten said "ever feel like you've been cheated?" at the end of the last sex pistols gig, which was basically him looking out at the crowd and seeing a bunch of poseurs who never gave a shit about them until they got popular and thought "fuck this, it's not what I'm about."

There's no denying that PIL was a much better band than the Sex Pistols or that Lydon has since sold his fucking soul away, but they were pretty much the essence of what it is to be punk - Living how you want and saying what the fuck you want to say, even if nobody wants to hear it.

American Punk is entirely different to British Punk, so don't lump us in with your shitty problems, mate.

I don't know what sort of pussy shit modern punks are doing, but back in the 70s there was a rise in Neo-Nazi shit with skinheads spraypainting swastikas and brutalising minorities, which started to cling onto Punk. Only, the actual punks didn't like that so they kicked the shit out of them. Lot of people died, too. So forget that weak #punchnazis shit.

X-Ray Spex is fucking rad and I won't hear a word against them

Well, their second album was shit, but Germfree Adolescents was great

Yes, and as someone with family who witnessed both sides of this conflict both in Europe and in America I can quite honestly tell you that that pendulum was swinging one way more often than the other. Don't forget punk quickly became popular and a lot of "regular punks" were just kids. Nazi punks gained a lot more teeth than they lost, if you catch my drift.

 No.88809

The problem lies not with punk itself, but with the generation of music critics that heralded it as some sort of messiah for rock.

 No.88811

British punk is the absolute gutter of the genre. Their philosophy towards making music was "hey, we know how to play our instruments well, but we're instead going to play them like toddlers in order to try and replicate some kind of "primal energy," yet still somehow come across banal and obnoxious."

The vomit-inducing political and social culture surrounding crust punk is what prevents it from becoming truly great, which is a shame, because it has arguably the most musical depth out of any of the subgenres. It's telling that one of the best crust punk albums isn't even by a crust punk band.
