 No.78071

What kind of instruments does 8/mu/ play? What instrument would you want to learn given the chance?

 No.78072

Electric guitar, bass guitar, drums and some piano. Vocals too if that counts.

The shawm .

 No.78074

I play guitar and its close relatives

Sometimes keyboard, and I also sing

 No.78078

I had some "classical training" with some elderly woman playing violin, a trumpet and a piano when I was a little teenybopper, but my parents were too niggardly and only bought an already decade-old trumpet that started rusting in months, while the violin never stopped being painful to play. The piano on the other hand, was always a blast to mess around with; still never knew how to play any songs on those instruments. Fast-forward to today and I'm just doing shitty bedroom rock, in the most "I Have No Budget" way (used guitars, tiny MIDI keyboard).

 No.78084

Piano, classically trained. Taught myself to play the recorder and some guitar recently. I have a theremin I played for a while when I was younger but I need to re-tune it, the circuits are completely out of tune and it's unplayable atm.

 No.78087

>>78084

Oh boy

Was it hard to learn theremin?

 No.78088

File: b7cfb38b2bd7217⋯.png (261.03 KB, 400x400, 1:1, rejoice.png)

Been playing drums for 12 years, took regular private lessons until two years ago. Started teaching myself keyboard two year ago and got pretty good for a while, then dropped off practicing and got super rusty. Got a cheap bass guitar on the first day of this year and haven't been able to put it down because I love playing it so much. Also play some ukulele, harmonica, banjo, and I sing. Everything besides the drumming is self-taught. I've wanted to pick up a wind instrument for a while. I think tenor sax in particular would be great, but my great uncle recently left my mom an heirloom trumpet of his that she said she's probably going to give to me, so I'll probably spend some time with that in a while once I'm more comfortable with my bass and don't feel like I'm abandoning an instrument too early. I absolutely LOVE learning new instruments, but the novelty is too powerful and it's really easy for me to get distracted from one and jump to the next without putting enough substantial time into the first. So far I'm loving bass so much that I don't foresee any problem sticking with it.

 No.78089

Guitar and trumpet. I'm fucking terrible at the trumpet, since guitar is way more fun and you can play more than one note at a time on it.

 No.78092

>>78087

Yes. First half year or so I spent just on spatially memorising how far I need to go if I want my chords and scales not to be completely off tune. I'd say I'm comfortable playing with a backing track (not necessarily with the melody I'm supposed to be playing, just the chords) but I still can't play it solo.

 No.78108

Would love to learn to play piano and violin

 No.78126

Bass guitar (14 years), drums (7 years), guitar (7 years) and clarinet (20 years). I would love to learn how to play the organ.

 No.78135

Piano, keyboards, synthesizers.

Drums would be nice to learn.

 No.78192

Any DJs here? I bought a controller and like to mix songs together. Still working on landing my first gig. :(

 No.78193

>>78192

You can't even do it and yet already looking for a gig? What is wrong with you?

 No.78603

Bass guitar (7 years) and jaw harp (2 years).

I would love to learn the violoncello and the duduk.

 No.78631

>>78071

I play bassguitar for a bit over two years now, my first instrument that I ever picked up. I also got an electric upright bass which is working out okay and a guitar (I can strum some chords, that's about it). Oh and I picked up a cheap keyboard because why the hell not, they're 20 bucks used.

Okay I decided to open the circuits and tune it so it's in playable state now. Might get featured on an ARF some time soon.

HOLY SHIT YES

Keep in mind next ARF is going to be noise-themed, you might run it through a few dist pedals and make a theremin solo :^)

 No.80048

How should I approach learning an instrument? I'd be interested in guitar but I'm not sure where to start.

 No.80061

>>80048

Start by learning some basic chords, like E, A, C, D and G, and learn how to hold a pick and switch between the chords quickly. Then you might want to learn how the notes of the strings relate to the notes of the frets, and learn how to play songs you like. There are a lot of tab websites. It gets way easier once you can switch between chords and move your fingers around independently.

Mainly flute/piccolo, marching bass drum, very very small bit of marching snare, and marching cymbals.

I'm the Pied Piper who'll come and steal your bitch :^)

I'm at the stage where I've not even bought a guitar yet, I take it I should get a cheap acoustic guitar and then learn online as you suggested, maybe work towards being able to play some songs I like then expand from there?

 No.80110

>>80088

Exactly, although I got IRL lessons so I wouldn't know what direction to point you in for online lessons. I started with a cheap (well, free) shitty acoustic guitar for a couple years. You should be able to find a good starter's acoustic or even maybe a classical guitar (the symmetrical ones with the nylon strings) for $50-$100 second hand, but I don't know where you live. By the way, if you do ever decide to get a better guitar, including if it's an electric, the most expensive thing you see in a music shop is almost definitely not worth the price. You don't need to spend $3000+ on a Gibson or a Fender. It's marketing and a bit of elitism.

 No.80268

Acoustic Guitar, and some Keyboards

I'd like to play Clarinet or Cello

 No.80299

Is Fender or Gibson better for music that isn't heavy metal.

 No.80301

>>80299

You could always go to a music store so you can play both and decide for yourself. It's subjective. There are also more than two brands that are any good. Don't fall for the marketing and try a bunch out.

 No.81714

Anyone here have any experience with the Squier Affinity? As far as I can tell its a pretty good starter Electric, and is worth the extra money compared to the Bullet, the only downside being that as its thinner you can't upgrade the Tremulo later (I doubt it's much of a concern on a starter guitar). I'm happy to give it the go ahead but I irrationally value feedback from imageboards more than elsewhere so figured I'd ask here first. This is the pack I'm looking at: https://www.rockshop.co.nz/shop/squier-affinity-pack-brown-sunburst-affinity-hss-strat-w-frontman-15g-amp.html

Note it's NZ dollars so don't start screeching that it costs twice as much as it should.

 No.82114

Does anyone know of any good resources for learning to play the trumpet?

 No.82124

Electric, acoustic(steel string), and bass guitar, piano, dulcimer, a little bit of saxophone and sitar and those instruments that anyone can play, like harmonica. I want to learn classical guitar, but I've heard you need a specific kind of guitar for that and I don't have the money to buy one of those at the moment. I was just going to put nylon strings on one of my regular acoustics, but the guy at the music store I was about to buy them from told me it doesn't work like that.

Who else is /recorder/ here?

I have somewhat overcome the beiginner-intermediary stage of the learning, only really having problems with some of the high notes and pretty much ready to move on to trills and the such.

What about other woodwinds? I'm trying to get into transversal flute with a cheap fife i bought but i'm having some difficulty getting the blowing right.

It is shameful for a /mu/ having no active instrument thread, so i'm gonna try to salvage this.

 No.85573

>>85566

/recorder/ here

personally I like to use more gritty techniques, besides accents by overblowing I also sometimes use rasp by trilling the tongue (say /r/ as a Russian would while blowing it). Classical purists don't like this but I'm sure this got actual use back in Baroque when ornamentation was rarely written down as it was it intended to be added by performers in the way they liked.

I need to get myself a transverse too.

You guys ever tried the tin whistle? I've tried recorder but apart from slow airs I prefer the whistle, especially for Irish music.

Idk, mine is wooden but on contrary I have never played a plastic one.

>>85589

I have a friend who has a couple of them (in different sizes). So yes I've tried it. I like the sound of tin whistle but I also enjoy the extra control I get from the thumbhole; overblowing is more comfortable that way.

 No.85593

Gitstick, bass, dulcimer, banjo, whistle, synth, zither, johico (did I spell that correct) also mess around with a few others but on and off. Samplers, turntables, single drums etc

 No.85663

Well definitely not that generic brand bass.

 No.85665

>>85663

Yamaha makes surprisingly good guitars and basses (but the designs are generic) that aren't your standard humbucker and Fender copies, the BB1200 has a rich metallic sound to it that sounds like a baritone guitar.

 No.85669

>>85665

I just meant the fact that it's a popular brand means that its tone can't be that unique. I've played one, but I think it was a cheap one.

 No.85672

They don't make anything like they used to, if you want a good guitar the older you go the better it is, it's something that has to be worn in like a gun or boot.

 No.86218

I had violin lessons when I was young but I'm still shit at it. Now I play piano, steel acoustic, and toy drums. I have my plastic recorder from school as well as a novelty tin whistle and harmonica too, but I haven't put too much work into those since I'm not even good at my main instruments.

I would like to be able to sing but my voice is complete shit. I'd also like to have an electric and an actual set of drums.

 No.86219

>I would like to be able to sing but my voice is complete shit.

Christ I know that feel. Not being able to sing/not having any confidence in singing has definitely had an impact on the type of music I try and make.

you just need a custom chinrest

 No.86302

also, tbchwy, most of fine motor skills done on a violin involve the left hand fingerings, the right hand only strokes the bow, so I'd dare claim that the default violin is left-handed. (opposite to plucked instruments where the left hand often just holds the chords while the right hand does most of the job)

 No.86371

>>86302

Violin is overall a very difficult instrument, you have to have a good ear and good muscle memory. Bowing is a lot harder though, wince the bow is so big and you're likely only hitting two strings at most (you're probably only going to be doing one most of the time), and you have to get both the strokes and pressure just right if you want a good sound.

t. guitarist who's tried to play friend's violins before.

 No.86381

I have 2 Ibanez basses and I regret buying the second one, what should I get for my next one? I prefer more warm and soft sounds akin to an upright bass, what people call bright just sounds harsh and tinny to me. My better electric has tapewound strings.

 No.86388

>>86364

It has two outputs and one replicates the 4001 and has a lot less variety in tone. I use my Ric into orange amp/ampeg speakers and it can go from nice and warm to extremely harsh. Probably worth playing around with a little more if you think it's a one trick pony.
