The French Revolution needed a villain figurehead. They chose the King's wife.

She refused the ridiculously expensive necklace when she didn't ask for it, and still got blamed for it. She got blamed for "let them eat cake," even though she never said that. If anything, Marie is a lesson on how a King's Court gets way out of hand with gossip and bickering.
