Washing Time! So how do ya'll wash your dakis and how often?
I was mine every 2-3 months. I know I should do it at least every month, but 90% of the time I remember to do it I'm either in the mood to cuddle with it, already getting ready to do to bed, or the washing machine is already being used. As for the method, I fold it inside out, fold that into thirds and then stuff it inside a pillow case in order to reduce damage on the fabric. I usually stick it in there with another blanket or something on the Handwash setting with both detergent and fabric softener. If I don't have time for legit washing/drying and it still is reeking from my stank then I'll spritz some Febreeze on there

To this day I have seen dozens of dakimakura of Youmu, but not a single one that (a) isn't too lewd and (b) doesn't feature Yuyuko on one side. Most are either (a) or (b).
I'd really like to customize a dakimakura with the Youmu halves of noritamago-sensei's dakimakura, but they are watermarked.

That being said, what would you guys suggest as far as material? Peach skin, natural velvet, smooth knit, or 2way tricot? I know that a lot of people get the 2way tricot because it's the most expensive, but I've also heard that peach skin feels the closest to real skin. Opinions?

I’m planning on making the big jump and buy my first daki of Flandre. Fortunately, many models are available of her; unfortunately, many do not fit my needs: They are either way too lewd, have weird faces, weird bodies, have boobs, etc.

How did you approach the artist for your commissions? Did you have a precise idea in mind and gave him/her detailed instructions?
I feel that what I would ask would be vague and general, like:
For side A, I want her to be lying on her back, with her original costume, and I want her to have a cute smiling face.
For side B...I'm not exactly sure what I want for side B. Something both echhi and cute, and I want her face to show tenderness and passion.
Maybe I could look at numerous random daki and sent the pics to the artist and ask him/her that I want that pose, that facial expression, etc.?

I haven't commissioned a daki myself I'm too shy because that seems more intimate than random waifu drawings, but I have commissioned artists before.
You don't have to have a detailed image set in your head, but you're likely to have better results if you do. Most artists that I've worked with, if you're doing an image that is highly detailed like a daki would be, are going to give you WIPs to make sure that they're doing the image correctly. You can always ask them to make changes to your liking, although try to get them at as early a stage as possible because it's harder to fix things later on.
Also, most artists love references so giving references is a good idea. Some artists think that more than a few pictures is overboard though so make sure you read the artist's terms before sending 20 pictures if they say 5 maximum or something. (Most aren't that exact, but you know what I mean.)
16crystals, I've given artists similar descriptions to yours before when I didn't mind if the artist took some liberties. If you really want something super specific, try to put an image in your mind first. Also it's okay to say things like "please don't make this lewd" or "I want her to not be wearing socks".

There are several people who mentioned here how the main reason for them to not having dakis is that they could not reconcile buying one with having people start asking questions in case they would see it I count myself in that group. It’s done! I finally ordered my first daki from Moe Gallery! Among the 4 candidates that I had pre-selected, I finally chose this one.
Although her facial expression is a bit weird and her hair looks somewhat too thick, this model had many advantages. First of all, I very like her body proportions and her silhouette. Also, she has the best looking skin; the colors and the light reflection are the more realistic. Even the red of her dress looks more vivid and you can even see the shape of her legs through it. I also like both her poses. Finally, side B is erotized but not lewd; I like seeing her legs, her cute belly and her chest, but think it’s beautifully erotic that her skirt just gently covers her genitals. Oh, and also, she has no boobs (I censured it, but it’s a flat chest); I don’t like when they depict lolis with boobs.

I’m a bit anxious about something. As any of you ever noticed color fading and fabric degradation after washing your daki?
It is time to give my daki (2 way tricot) a first wash and I’m afraid it will damage the daki. Maybe it won’t be noticeable after just 1 wash, but I’m afraid it will get noticeable after many washings.
I know how to prevent damage and color fading: Wash by hand, wash daki inside-out, use cold water, add vinegar to set the dye, use a color protection detergent…Still, I can’t help but being worried…
I’m also worried about the very long term degradation, and wonder if I should order a second daki of the same model as I like it a lot and there is a strong possibility that it won’t be available forever.

That's the worst. There are a bunch of designs all over the place, and I am pretty sure they are mostly bootlegs, but you can't tell the quality from those little previews. Now I have the scans of some of these designs (they were only released in a doujin and have no official daki prints I think) I could retouch in photoshop and use some of that waifu2x magic on them just like with my previous daki. So I am not sure if I should risk getting a bootleg or buy a "custom" one again (unless they're like the same price, then it's better getting a custom), when I decide to get another. I kinda want to get a lewd one someday.

Hey calm down here. I can perfectly understand the strong desire to hold your waifu in your arms, but I suggest you don’t make an impulsive purchase that would turn out to be suboptimal (we’re talking about your waifu after all, so you better not rush anything).
First of all, have you look on many daki websites for the perfect model? Here are some of the biggest ones:

Second, I expect that a custom model will be more expansive than one already on display. I suggest you take a look to see if these 2 images that you provided would not be already offered on one of the 4 websites I mentioned (so you can save money). Still, these 2 images do not seem to come from the same daki model, so if you really want these 2 images on the same daki you will probably have to buy custom anyway…

Well, when I ordered my daki on moegallery, I remember that the inner pillow was offered at a lower price if one would buy both the daki cover and the inner pillow at the same time. I expect that this is probably the rule on most daki websites. So buying both is probably the most ‘’cost effective way to get a daki’’.
I know some people combined regular pillows to fill their daki. You could do that, but the fit won’t be as good (less aesthetic) and it will also probably feel less comfy. With 90$, you appear to have almost all the money you need for a 2waytricot with the inner pillow, so I suggest you be patient and take the time needed to get the few more dollars necessary for the full kit. But still, the final decision is yours.

A life-sized daki of him would have to be completely custom-made, which would be impractical to make and to own, but what's the point if it's not life-sized?
On the other hand, elementary school flashback Midousuji would fit on a normal pillowcase if he was curled up, but the consequences of someone seeing that by accident could be much worse than a normal daki and I want to make it through my life without ending up in the party van. I usually grab it by the corners and shake it around a bit, then flip it and do the same. I repeat this a few times.
My daki usually gets kinda round too, so what I do is put it on the bed pomf =3, cover it with sheets and just lie on it to flatten it a bit.
I guess it'll also depend on what kind of material is the fill made of and how much there is.

I'd say go for Cuddly Octopus cuz octopuses are my fav animal. On a serious note they'll both probably be about the same wait time but i personally like the feel of the 2way tri i got from cuddly octopus more than the hobby heart one i have. Though i haven't used custom printing from either service so i can't speak for it but I'd go with cuddly octopus since they have better customer service in case something goes wrong.

A lot of people swear by the A&J DHR6000, pic related both of mine are that pillow. Well stuffed and quite fluffy, the inner pillows 'case' is one of the softest things i've ever felt but it gets covered up by your case. Inside seems to be just typical polyester stuffing. They're quite springy and dont just fold over which I enjoy but makes them hard to sit in chairs.

CuddlyOctopus is usually the go to if you want a quality custom daki. They offer some fast shipping but they make their orders on a monthly rollout.
So like, if you make your order by a specific date, you'll be added to that month's order, which will be sent to their printer who prints them and then ships them out.
Also, when you say custom, do you mean like, art included? Because you're not really going to find a place that will also do the art for you. You're going to want to commission the art and then take it to them to print.

Cuddly octopus won't. They were created in an effort to combat bootleg dakis. They'll only do a custom print if it's art you commissioned. Hobby heart and/or moegallery will probably print it for you though as long as it's to the right resolution.

I find that most jap artists are pretty expensive and have a bit of a pretentious attitude. Japs are either the nicest people in the world or massive assholes. I've commissioned a few not for dakis though. I wouldn't limit yourself to just jap artists tbh, there's alot of talented artists who draw amazing dakis from all over the world, loen who drew my favorite daki is from South America. I wouldn't worry about anything getting lost in translation if you provide enough reference material. It's easier to draw based on pics than on words.

I have a custom dakimakura in mind which would involve taking some high resolution official art I like, rendering/cropping the backgrounds out and adding some comfy bed like background to it.
The problem is, both of the artworks I want to use have either a small part of her body cropped out of the picture or a very small area obscured by another character's hand.
Can you commission artists for help with things like this? Pic related is examples of what I would need doing and a rough mock-up of the idea, just the areas with the hands redrawn and a duvet or something drawn in to cover up the end of the legs.
It seems like it would be such a small thing to ask of a proper artist but I wouldn't mind paying and I'd like somebody who actually knows their way around a virtual brush to do it so it looks as good as possible and as if there was no editing done there at all.
Anyone had anything similar done in the past?

I've been wanting to buy another 7 meter daki, but the process was so draining last time.
Getting it, and getting it printed was so damn nice, but finding an artist this time is going to be almost impossible it feels like.
Not only did I get an amazing deal for my last one at only 70 dollars a side because I was friends with the artist.
he had to upgrade his computer before he could even finish it because of the file size.
I'm worried about finding another artist who even has a computer that can handle it, let alone what the price for just the art is going to be. and then the printing process is expensive.
To top it all off, because it's so huge, CuddlyOctopus won't give it that coverage of reprinting if there's some kind of fuckup. It's understandable considering it's like printing 5 normal dakis, but it still sucks.
I don't think I can go back to a normal daki after having my 7 meter ones, but I still want to add to my collection.
