Hancock's work (specifically Magicians) is on my list to read. From what I've read thus far (a bit of Fingerprints), the history is correct, but he over-generalizes the spread of the "atlantaens" (first urban wave maritime culture). Probably wasn't a unitary group of peoples or a state like he posits but a more or less stable oikumene but larger and slower.

I saw his name getting tossed around recently so I looked into some interviews and there was a clip of him promoting the use of halucenogens.
Have to give him a chance now :)

A guy looked at all of these ancient maps that shouldn't exist. One for example shows Antarctica without its ice caps, that was over 8,00 years ago. He theorized a highly advanced civilization lived long before us

First one is basically "well, duh". When you consider how badly the average computer chip would be preserved a thousand or more years from now, it's not unfeasible to think that an advanced civilization could have existed early on.
Second one is also kind of "well, duh". It only takes about ten minutes of research to figure out there was some serious fuckery going on with the hippie scene.
