Who else here is a fan of dystopias, or is even writing one himself? What do you think is important in writing them well?

Taking the bait because why the hell not? Zombies died with Walking Dead, at least for the time being.

he's right though. dystopian works are always the same. either it' s in a stepford wives kind or way "everything is perfect!**or is it?" or "everything is fucked up and soul crushing".
either way you'll get a "shocking" revelation and the ending will depend on the mood of the author at the time he wrote it.
i guess the best ones, are the ones that sort of intercepted some trend in society and took it to their extreme consequences.but i must say that i can't think of one beside brave new world or 1984, which i liked for the concepts rather than for the book itself.

another one i can think about is turner diaries, which is utter crap. even though,as much as it pains me to admit, really did intercept a thing or two in society. but it's clearly not enough when you could not write to save your life and you're kind of an asshole.

I don't know, I like them. Guess half of that is just me being morbid and too much into grimdark. However, they also emphasize how society can get sick, how to live in such a society and how to possibly cure it. They can be a great tool for social analysis. Naturally, this tool is only ever as good as the one using it. Jennifer Government and Neuropath failed as dystopias because their authors had no fucking plan how the world works.

Turner Diaries is one of the worst books I've ever read in my life. Maybe the worst. Either way, it's fucking disgusting.

exactly, the difference, but this applies for every work of art, between the authors who have something to say and the ones following a fad.

Earth Abides. It's not dystopian, but the world does end. It's one of my favorite books.

I've been writing a book about the decline into a dystopia rather than just setting it in one.
It's from the POV of a family man just trying to do good by his wife and kids, stuck between all sorts of groups trying to recruit him for their own ends.

I mentioned it on another thread, but it all begins when Reagan gets AIDS from a botched blood transfusion after the attempt on his life. Pic related.
