Hi /lit/, /pol/ here. I was wondering if there was a preferred book that has the Hercules legend in it. I want to read it to further my knowledge about him being a Sun god like Jesus after finishing this book. If you know a good one for Osiris or Baldur I'll take those too.

From pic related:

"The following computer-generated description may contain errors and does not represent the quality of the book:

The attention of the writer having been called to the fact that all Indo-Germanic nations have worshipped crucified Saviours, an investigation of the subject was made. Overwhelming proof was obtained that the sun-myths of the ancient Aryans were the origin of the religions in all of the countries which were peopled by the Aryans. The Saviours worshipped in these lands are personifications of the Sun, the chief god of the Aryans. That Pagan nations worshipped a crucified man, was admitted by the Fathers of the early Christian Church. The holy Father Minucius Felix, in his Octavius, written as late as A. D. 211, indignantly resents the supposition that the sign of the cross should be considered as exclusively a Christian symbol; and represents his advocate of the Christian argument as retorting on an infidel opponent thus: "As for the adoration of crosses, which you object to against us, I must tell you that we neither adore crosses nor desire them."" - Published 1889

what?

what's the similitude with hercules and jesus of nazareth? beside the divine birth, which in hercules' case involves actual sex.

otherwise hercules tends to be kind of a dick, iirc.

btw his story, read by my history teacher in elementary school, i what got me into greek myths.

even though most of what i actually read about him comes from greek and latin mythology dictionaries. not bad reads, if anything because it allows you to know the deeds of the other characters mentioned in one entry, or not.

The book OP posted has a bit of reputation for exaggerating(or in some instances flat out fabricating) similarities between Christianity and pre-Christian myths. IIRC, there are instances where it even says things like Horus was born of a virgin and that Dionysus parted the Red Sea, which are just untrue.

that explains a lot.

A mythology dictionary sounds inherently boring.

>similarities between Christianity and pre-Christian myths.

Well yes, that was the point. Though there are more similarities when you stop being myopic enough to notice them. Seeing that the ankh is just a cross being an example.

The rest is just the nature of all Aryan religions being inherently based on the travels or adventures of the Sun through the constellations. Including the spear of destiny.

> Dionysus parted the Red Sea, which are just untrue.

Yeah, I remember that one. I'm still gonna look that up as well. The book is fairly well sourced, so I'll also check if that part had one, though I expect any books it sourced to be impossible to find now.

not for me.

to each his own.

yeah. and a cross is just two lines intersecting each other. if you want to find it you could find it anywhere.

not to mention that likely christians would have not picked up crosses as a symbol if jesus of nazareth hadn't been crucified.

and regarding the spear of destiny the only relevence it had regarding actual religion and not movies with nazi undead sorcerers was something about this

but i must admit i'm far from an expert-
