I've recently accepted than I'm an impatient bastard and, from highschool through college, I'd been forced to teach myself to skim and glance over text for key words and phrases, resulting in being wholly unable to become absorbed in text.

On top of being unable to enjoy a good book, it's both crippled my writing ability and made me an obnoxious critic.

How do I slow down, /lit/? I just want to sit back and read something.

Easy Mode - Can anyone recommend some good audiobooks? I've been hooked on them since I listened to a reading of Lovecraft's Herbert West, Reanimator.

Although skimming is a natural reaction to something that is too difficult to make sense of.

Speaking from experience, I assume, seeing as you can't comprehend what I wrote.

Maybe that wasn't the best thread. The idea is to pick better books. In this case the issue is density. If you try to skim your average short story, or an explanation of something complex, you won't understand and have to reread. If you look at novels, these things address tangential points, descriptions, characters, whathaveyou all the time.

Get off the internet.

No, really. The internet is an ocean of piss where the only way to find something good is to flit around until you find something that grabs you. The mental mode of browsing the web doesn't translate well to books, unless you live in the 1980s, flipping through reference books in the library to hunt down some sources for a college paper.

A book is something written over a long period of time. Personally, I can't really comprehend them if I'm taking them in little sips, like couple beers after work. I have to get trashed on a fifth of vodka, reading for hours at a time. Metaphorically:^)

>slowing down

Anon, you're going to need to go even faster now.

>How do I stop skimming?

I remind myself that every single word in the story was written for a reason.

No, but its not like you look at every pixel.

Skimming is fine, as long as you do it efficiently.
