To which events are you referring? I was under the impression that due to the South's lack of industry, poor infrastructure, and limited ports they pretty much had everything besides quality of generals stacked against them, and it would have taken several extreme blunders on the North's part for the South to come out ahead.

Their strategy was based around international recognition, which is what finally won the revolutionary war for the US. The south had much more motivated soldiers and plenty of sympathizers up north to boot, and all these combined to give them a real, honest to God shot at victory.
