Like with most sensations, you can develop a tolerance if you gradually expose yourself to more of it.

It sucks, but it works for me. The only problem is that you gradually slip back into your vulnerable state over time if you stop being exposed to such stimulii, and you'll have to start all over again.

Funny, I've been wondering how I could become more sensitive, and less apathetic. Barely feel anything these days.

Oh, good question! Well, as said already, by brute-force desensitisation is one way, definitely.

Alternatively, practicing a mindfulness-type of acknowledgement may allow you to process emotion less impulsively, and with more control

As you mature, you also may expect some general increases in your ability to handle emotionally provocative stuff

Yah, I've already seen a lot of bad things on the net etc. I think gradual sensititisation for extended periods without exposure is probably what happens - I look forward to it, and I think it's working a bit already.

What exact things are you sensitive too? You can say that I'm sensitive to social justice discourse on the internet and what helped me is ultimately realizing that despite all the hubbub about it, a lot of those things don't really have much of an effect on your life, despite being in the right "demographic." It's really more about putting on a performance and seeing who can be the best "passionate" person.

For me, once I discovered how much I and others were deceiving themselves, the emotional effect that sort of thing had on me was reduced greatly. Brute-level desensitization never worked for me but maybe it will work for others.

There's a lot of good advice here too, including taking up meditation, learning about mindfulness (being self aware of yourself) and and being able to make fun of yourself. Although with the latter, it can go too far into bullying yourself to make yourself feel worse for an audience.

Ah, how nice. Ancient depictions of inner peace, lust, love and equanimity upgrade themselves to their equivalents in modern popculture. They do it on their own, the names even stay the same. Meme magic finds a way. May you reach satori's softness, brother

i wasn't kidding when i said i can't take it by hearing "your waifu a shit". every meme that's meant to offend weeaboos offends me tenfold.

one thing that makes it a bit better for me is if i know it isn't directed towards me personally. but that can be hard when they're talking about more and more specific topics.

however this isn't the core problem. the core problem is that deep down i want everyone to like me. i think if i can get rid of that root and just be myself and stop being so sensitive about insults that my life would improve greatly. if you know any tips on how to do this please tell.

everyone thanks for the other advice. i'm going to try out tai-chi sooner or later in order to be more calm.

OP here. after a couple of months trying the things suggested in this thread. i have concluded that instead of trying ways to desensitize myself through tricks myself it is better to stop browsing offensive sites/board, build up confidence and improve myself. that way i wouldn't take everything extremely personal and build up quite a resistance.

Why would you want to be? It is better to stay innocent.

To actually give an answer; if you want to numb down then you must kill a part of you inside yourself. The more he dies, the less sensitive you get. Partial spiritual and psychological death is not a good thing though, stay better away from the wicked than to become like them.

That is not a logical response to your irrational fear of opinions you dont agree with.

You need to use aversion therapy.

Like if someone is irrationally afraid of spiders, and you gradually expose them to spiders more and more eventually they wont be afraid because they know it cant hurt them.

Either that or they get bitten by a black widow and die.

In either case its Darwinism in effect.
