What is shitposting? When someone says this are they just saying they don't like the post or does it have another meaning? I'm not even that new. I've just never gotten an actual definition of the meme/term in the few years I've been around imageboards.

Some Anons just call whatever post they don't like a shitpost.

It's supposed to be a post that someone makes to intentionally start an argument but like what the other guy says it's usually just a different opinion that someone doesn't like that said person deems a "shitpost" because he can't believe that someone would have that opinion. I mean, there are people who do shitpost for no reason other than they're bored but it can be hard to tell these days. Except the ones that are just gibberish.

The definition tends to shift around a bit depending on the particular site's rules and mods, so technically speaking, it is "whatever I don't like".
That said, however, most places' stated definition of shitposting is either >>30672 , or the one I'm more familiar with is "a post that does not serve to create or further conversation," generally in a meaningful way.

I always defined it as being passive aggressive or outright obnoxious by posting something lacking of any real goal to be noteworthy or applauded for wit. -so for example being an ass and answering everything with one-liners and memes or being sarcastic for no discernable purpose (both abusing the culture of imageboards to a degree where what you're saying has no value) would be shitposting. Really though it just sounds like a fun go-to phrase in itself to say that just ends up feeding the fire (much like actual feces sometimes do quite well funny enough) if a shitshow has already escalated.

It can mean anything from "stop liking what I don't like" through to "your post contributes nothing to the thread". It can also be a synonym for trolling.
How its used depends entirely on how much of a shitposter the person using it is.

Most people take the internet too seriously. "Shitposter" is the buzzword they use to brand those who don't.

Everything on the internet is shitposting, including this entire thread.
However the quantity of shit that exist in a shitpost is directly proportional to the self-importance of the written submission.
Journalistic opinion pieces therefore tend to be the most masterful shitposts one can find on the internet.

No, that's not how it works. If you're adding to the discussion, and the discussion itself is not shit, you're not shitposting. Even if a thread goes completely off topic multiple times, it could still be legitimate discussion. old /tg/ used to have threads like that all the time. I have an example here of a thread that started as a shitpost and developed into actual discussion.
>Journalistic opinion pieces therefore tend to be the most masterful shitposts one can find on the internet.
You might be right about that.

Well I always thought that shitposting can have both positive and negative meaning, shitposting in an actual discussion thread is low-quality post that doesn't mean anything.
Shitposting in a non-serious thread might just be a joke, or a bad post that is written to be deliberately shitty.

This is the best explanation I've read in the thread. It's simply posting without really trying to engage or contribute. If you haven't thought out your response or considered the posts of others, you're not putting the correct amount of effort into your reply.
Not to say there's no place for shitposting nor that there's not an art to it, but decent places don't let those voices dominate the conversation.

Basically blatant behavior that anyones or inflames, for example post the same thing 400 times, post "Pokemon sucks" on Pokemon.com, filling a thread about how bad Pokemon is with images of Pokemon, etc..

but what if pokemon DOES suck and that guy is trying to educate them on their poor choices in life and taste. Blatant inflammatory comments aren't necessarily shitposting even if they usually are just because they are a dissident. They are just more of a mallet instead of a chisel.

As shown by groups like /pol/, BLM or any terrorist organization whose ideals were realized later on it's not always about being polite and logical. Sometimes people have to first be loud, obnoxious, and make absurd claims in order to open a dialogue for the actual intellectuals to get to work.

And that act, in itself, is shitposting. It might be shitposting with an end in mind, but it is still hot air that is not on its own intended to add to the conversation..

according to my definition (>>30673), yes. The caveat to that, though, is that hammering out "da joos", "dem wites", "nationarist pigs", "ze german pigdogs", "eenfidels", or what-have-you, does not do that. These may or may not serve an end which is to meaningfully contribute, however, it is a shitpost. In real life, or the tubes.
