Do you play anything? Piano, guitar, bass, violin, anything at all? Or perhaps you sing? If not, what would you like to play the most and why?

If you do play an instrument, why not record a short clip to share and get feedback on it? We could even start a /kind/ band.

Inspiration, requests, recordings, or help is always welcome.

I was decent on the recorder in elementary school. My family used to own a drum set for some reason, but I never really did anything with it. I've always wanted to learn how to play the piano, but I'm too poor for that now, maybe sometime in the future. Nice thread btw.

I produce my own music and play the guitar, snig and play the piano. I really, really like music, listening to it and playing.

I tried to make it as a video game music composer but it just was too tough without a solid income to back myself up while I started, so I'm studying to get a good job, then gonna keep doing music as a hobby. Yay.

No, but I'm really interested in playing the piano and I've been trying to get into producing for a while now. Certainly not too easy for a guy who has never played anything.

Going to buy an electric piano real soon and will probably take some private lessons after I've asked about the price from the teacher. It'd work as a MIDI controller too, right? Wouldn't have any knobs and stuff though.

Currently I play lead tenor sax in my school's jazz band, clarinet in its symphonic band, and piano on my own.

Do many people even keep up with music after high school really? I couldn't even imagine giving up playing these instruments, way too important to me.

I seriously recommend just picking up an instrument piano's by far the easiest to learn and get started on

just fucking do it, actually start yourself up and keep working on it, it's seriously worthwhile in the end.

If anyone wants I can record something real quick and share it, my sax and piano are next to me right now.

I used to play the Alto Sax. I still own it, but it's old… I haven't played it years, so I'm probably pretty bad at it now.

It reminds me of my days in the marching band, where I would stumble on two left feet to try and helplessly keep in line with the other band members. I never did. I always got Ds in the class because at least I showed up. It's honestly one of the most embarrassing times of my life.

I started playing the recorder a while ago because anime characters always look so cute carrying them around in their backpacks. It's a fun and easy instrument to play, which is probably why they teach it to elementary schoolers in anime. I can also kind of play the ukulele. I want to learn to play the Melodica next, because there's lots of Melodica anime bgm I like. I love the cute sound of toy instruments. I'm not a good musician, but instruments are fun to play with!

I was told I was a good singer all the way through high school. I went to college and failed auditions again and again to get into music school. I kept working and kept studying and kept honing my voice and eventually, 7 years later, I did get into a good school for music. I graduated soon after, thinking that the prestige the school carried would have meaning.

I was wrong.

No amount of formal training could improve my mediocrity. I have never been in my own band, never been in a musical, never been in an a capella group, and despite the fact that i have the knowledge and training to do so, never directed my own choir. I have been trying to become a choir director for almost 5 years with zero success.

Voice is the most looked-down-on instrument. Anybody who has stood up to sing karaeoke can claim to be able to sing. While formal training requires a secondary instrument, singers have it rough trying to find groups to play in. Or maybe it is just me, whose ability to play any other instrument is laughable.

Every time I discover that somebody I know is a musician of sort, I break into tears. I want to make music, but I know I will never be at the level of skill in which I can work with others. All in spite of the fact that I have worked my whole life to aspire to something so useless.

piano/comp anon here, I'm just gonna avatarfriend Arima for this thread, I'm probably gonna make a ton of posts in this thread.

what are you saying, youre voice is delicious

>>22325

These are all feasible, I'm totally biased towards doing some jazz since I'm already a jazz player, but I don't know how well we could make it work without being together. Simple songs like undertale's OST would sounds good.

>>22267

>>22343

I have finale 2014, so the drums part can be covered. Now that I think about it, I could hand out sheet music to you guys for whatever song we play, if you wanted, using finale. And my halloween was great, played some spooky vidya and made cookies with friends c:

~~~~~~~~
SO before we do any narrowing, we should figure out what instruments we have so far, and decide on something based on that. Then we can decide what to cover, or what to compose if we /really/ want to. (I wouldn't mind taking the brunt of that, I'm pretty hyped for this idea if we can pull together for!)
From what it looks like(if everyone who posted is still around), we have:
piano
tenor sax
clarinet
guitar x3
trumpet
trombone
recorder
bass
and a male voice (who doubts himself even though he sounds great)
With this in mind, let's brainstorm and suggest songs to cover, or what kind of song we could compose. does anyone wanna start a skype group for the people who are interested in joining this project? I'm 500% hype if we can make this work
Let's get cooking!
I'm having a bit of trouble finding stuff we could cover, mostly because I have very little exposure to /kind/ music, I play and listen to mostly metal. That said I still really like lighter music like this, and I'm all for whatever you guys like.
Like I said before, also extremely hype for this. The only band I've been in was for a stage show where we played the most boring music imaginable for 3 hours a night, 5 nights a week.
Also, I don't know if I'd count all of the people who have posted in here as being down for a song together. (You forgot a *cock* player, by the way.) If you could do tabs for guitar that'd be great, because I *never actually learned to read sheet music…*
I'm totally fine for some jazz, I really like most of the songs from Sakamichi's OST. Depends what everyone else wants. A skype group or something similar might not be bad too so we can just spam youtube links to possible songs.
E D# C# (repeat)
until it goes to chorus , then turns to
(B B E D# - B B C# C#) repeat few times
(B C# B B - B C# B B) repeat few times then end with (E E E E)
2 chorus
(E E E D - E E E D - C# E E D - C E E E) repeat few times
Then repeat all over again, to be frank the chord progression doesn't go more than B C# D# E. Its within these 4 chords. Good luck practicing.
Wanted to play a little better and fix up the articulation/tempo/pretty much everything on parts, but it's maddening how I can casually play it decently enough, but as soon as I hit that record button, it all goes to hell when I play. This was my least bad recording after about 8 attempts. Figured I might as well share something though and help keep the thread going.
Anyways, this is just a small sample from Mili's song Unidentified Flavourful Object. I was excited ever since a youtuber Wang Luke ripped the piano from a game that a lot of Mili's songs come out in, and have been doing some notation so that I could play along with the piano.
Oh, and sorry if some of the higher notes are a bit grating.
Depending on where you live, dedicated bassists are in really high demand for local bands. If you can find one near you they will almost definitely want you to join.
And joining a band is probably one of the most motivating things for musicians: it encourages personal improvement and develops your ability to work in a group.
I get what you're saying about being ignored as a bassist, but the best way to counter that sentiment is to be the best damn bassist you can. When or if you gig, you make it your goal to play your part perfectly, so that when everyone else in the band screws up their part they turn to you. But again, that means you have to practice practice practice.
Playing bass is probably the most under-appreciated part of being a band besides being the keyboard player, so if you want to be appreciated you have to be good.
If you don't mind being bullied a little, this guy does some videos on how to be a decent player in any band.
On my EWI USB, with flute as the instrument. I don't have the confidence to not play along with the vocals when recording, but it also makes me lag behind the rhythm a bit. Not to mention quarter note-eighth note triplets were always my weakness in band, I have a tendency to play them like dotted eighth notes-sixteenth notes, and did it quite a few times in this recording.
But you're right, I just need to have more patience. I'm always in a rush to learn a song whenever I'm finally done with the notation. I get more interested in playing it somewhat decently instead of making sure it's right.
Follow the beats, not bg instruments.
Experience player should able to hear the beats inside their head. You need to get used into that. Assuming you know all the chords and you have no trouble on switching into fast notes, you should able to do it.
Sometimes playing it through just by using metronome only would help, and it's a good practice I believe.
It's a bit embarrassing, but I never built the rhythm in my head thing. I've always relied on external factors due to all the time spent in concert and marching band. I'll definitely work on it now though.
I probably just need to get use to playing on my EWI some more, too. I've been a brass person for so long, which makes it a bit jarring how responsive this thing is. Before, there was always this slight delay between when your fingers start moving and when the valves were in place to play the notes. But on my EWI, the note will come out the moment you touch the key, so it's screwing with how I play a bit. I'm either rushing on accident, or lagging behind trying to overcompensate.
I'll definitely follow your advice though, thanks!
necrobumping because why not?
I jumped around a lot, looking for something I liked and could play at home without being so loud my parents kill me. The end result is that I consider myself reasonably fluent in:
>the trumpet
>saxophone
>clarinet
>violin
>cello
>bass
>drums (kit, and I also marched for a while)
>xylophone
>marimba
>guitar
>bass guitar
My primary instrument is the guitar. I consider myself an electric bluesfriend, but I'm trying to teach myself to play fingerstyle and classical right now.
I'd like to learn to harmonica and the banjo. I'd also like to learn how to sing, but that's a much harder fight, as the nazis would have used my singing voice in battle had they run out of bullets.
Teaching?, you must be very good then. I haven't played classical guitar for very long time now ever since my finger hurts a lot whenever I played it. The string height of my guitar is nonadjustable, especially the gap between the fretboard and the strings are not thin enough for me. Back then when I bought it cheap, I never actually studied these kind of technical stuff. But once I experienced it, now I felt kinda of regret for having the kind of guitar.
If I ever play it again, I would prefer a better quality classical guitar that's easier to do maintenance. Yeah, I believe they are very pricey, considering I'm a poorfriend, I doubt I ever buy one.
Aside from that, I enjoyed learning piano by myself lately. At least it doesn't hurt my finger, but in the same time its a lot harder than playing a guitar tbh.
The skin of my finger tips are very soft and feminine like. Yes I can harden it through training, but still whenever I would like to do bending or sliding, it felt very sharp as like my fingers wants to bleed especially on lower strings.
It shouldn't a be a problem if the gap of the strings weren't high between the fretboard. Changing the lower strings to nylons helps a lot in reducing my injury but then the sound quality wouldn't be great.
I once had a harmonica when I was about 5 or 6. It was pretty old and rusty, probably made in commie Poland too. I wonder how I avoided tetanus. Anyhow, I have this early memory of blowing into it on a hot summer day outside the blocks my family had recently moved into. Mom wanted me to socialize with the block Chadlets, so she sent me outside and wouldn't let me back in. I usually just took books and a bottle of water. For some reason I ended up taking the harmonica with me and playing with it on a bench, but without much success. I probably dropped it somewhere, or lost it in a mess I made and my parents threw it out. Maybe with it I would have ended up a musician.
Actually, I might get a new one, I don't know how much they cost, but I've gotten quite a bit in prize money this school year, so it would be my own earnings I'd be spending.
Harmonicas aren't that bad, considering most musical instruments. Of course, you can always find the $600USD solid gold, ivory-inlaid, baptised-in-the-blood-of-a-virgin, hand-crafted, god-slaying variety, but you don't need to spend more than $20 for a really bloody nice one.
I doubt most of us even notice the messiness, it just that your dynamic range need a bit more higher especially playing the chorus. I knew the harder you blow, the harder you need to control into hitting the note and making it doesn't sound bad. Have some more confidence playing the EWI.
Ah, so you noticed the volume issue. Yeah, I sorta nerfed the maximum volume the sampler could output from the breath sensor in order to mask some issues the sampler was having with sustaining a steady volume on longer notes and on long strings of notes slurred together. It's hard to explain. But there's also a bit of a confidence thing, too. It feels a lot easier to mess up playing a lead synth instrument than a classical instrument like a flute or trumpet on the EWI.
And shucks, you're flattering me.
Does anyone play violin here? I got into it recently and I've been learning via the suzuki method, which is mainly aimed for kids but i heard it's good for adults too. I can't make a good sound yet. Proper bowing technique is hard to achieve. Any protips?
I guess that means I play instruments, then. Does that mean, I'm, like, talented or something? I could use an excuse not to hate myself.
I think you're talented! I might play guitar and such, but production software intimidates me a bit. Even when I was in the recording booth, I had no idea what was going on outside my cozy little plastic and foam corner.
I've been playing for a few years. The first thing to really address if you're having trouble bowing is to look at your hold technique, which should look like pic related. If you've got that down and are comfortable with it, try bowing an open string up and down. Focus on keeping the bow perpendicular to the strings as you draw it. As your arm moves concentrate on your elbow and wrist in particular; they should be the two major points moving. If you find yourself using your shoulder to move the bow, relax it and put more emphasis on elbow movement.
If your bowing form is right, then take a look at the bow: is it at the appropriate tension? Does it have enough rosin? Is there stick rosin residue on your strings?
Most of this stuff is all about habit forming: if you consciously think about proper form long enough, eventually it will just come naturally.
On a different note, how is the Suzuki method? I never took formal lessons, just jumped into a community orchestra and learned by osmosis and practice.
I'm going to try these tips next time and practice them.
Suzuki method is okay. It's actually nice to have a book that progresses gradually in difficulty. That way I don't have to think what to practice next. It's also good for PLAYING sheet music, but it does not actually tell you the note names, so actual reading is a no-go which is kinda bad. But that can come later.
Not really great for learning actual theory, but getting used to the instrument.
I'm also busy playing guitar. Which is easier to pick up and play for fun or learn new songs with, because i'm more skilled playing it. Kinda ruins my motivation for the violin. Of course, I like the violin more than guitar to be honest.
