So I've been on a weird autocannon kick lately, and trying to learn more about the Oerlikon 20mm led me to discovering this beast.

Apparently the Polsten was the result of Polish and British engineers taking he Oerlikon design and simplifying it for mass production. Weighing in with less than half the parts and half the cost, the Polsten gun reportedly had the same accuracy and reliability as its more complex bother. The Canadians and even US armies supposedly used at least a few of them. I'm trying to find the blueprints for it (or the Oerlikon for that matter) for my collection, only to discover that autocannon plans, even those with long-expired patents like these, don't seem to have jack shit available for them unlike many other historical heavy weapons. Anyone have any leads?

We wouldn't want civilians having access to WW2 aircraft armament blueprints as that would surely increase the rate of divebombing raids on schools committed by white meximale incel nazis, think of all the children that could be saved by stricter autocannon control!

>civie legal semi-autocannon

I can see why (((they))) don't want that out there. Anzio could make a semi auto 20mm if they wanted. Projectiles are the main cost.

It looks like, and probably works like a big 20mm sten gun

That brings up an interesting question.

If you were building a >.50 Cal DD 'cannon', what would you chamber it in? What projectiles and brass are commonly available to wildcat with, or are you going to be relegated to making everything from scratch?

The closest you can get with commercial ammo is .50BMG. 14.5mm might work, but if you're able to get your hands on large quantities of 14.5mm brass it would probably be just as easy to obtain some actual 23mm brass.

20mm vulcan and 25mm bushmaster. One for AA, one for anti light armor. Both brass and tungsten projectiles can be found if you know where to look. 23mm ZU-23 could work too, but brass is harder to find stateside. 30mm ammo of various types could be looked at too.

It is fucking sad that you don't know 15.5mm HMG the literal largest energy machine gun ever made.

I'm going to screencap this post so I can na-na-na-na about knowing something /k/ didn't ten years later.

>can be fed with differently loaded belts from either left or right side at the same time

can be selected to shoot one type of ammo or another type of ammo with a switch, or shoot both alternately

>30% more energy than 14.5mm, 30% less energy than a 20mm

Perfect intermediate cartridge between autocannons and machine guns, the problem now is that there's slim pickings in the west between 12.5mm and 25mm.

>12.5mm fits best on willys-sized vehicles, around 1t each

>25mm fits best on bradley sized vehicles, around 25t,000kg each

And if you have no weapons for in between it's pretty fucking dumb to build vehicles in between those weight classes. Even if you want to transport your men safely enclosed from biological and chemical attacks as well as some kevlar to stop shrapnel it's still dumb to transport eight guys in a 20t stryker with 12.5mm armament when you can easily transport 3 guys in a 1t jeep with a 12.5mm armament.

>any HMG round against modern tank/IFV armor

No penetration or significant damage. Shit, 30mm can't penetrate as far as we know. With shells, you have the ability to fill them with HE or tungsten/DU sabots.

I envision a cannon like this being used in a more helicopter/attack aircraft defense then an anit-armor platform. Light armor and infantry is fair game, but right now, heavy armor will need to be attacked with conventional AT weapons.

But is there really a need for an intermediate cartridge between 12mm and 20mm?
