There's no discharge in the war!

What kind of gun would you generally say is best for individual survival.

I was thinking rifles and pistols would be generally the topic but any advice is welcome.

Any double-barreled 12 gauge shotgun of sufficient quality, due to reliability and versatility.

I wanted to say that black-powder rifles are the best, but >>598492 is right, because you can also use them with black powder.

I recommend getting a good .22lr due to its low cost and plentiful ammo

very dependent on where you are (arctic, rain forest, desert) and the context of the situation (war time or peace time)

for just going out into the woods around me and bringing home some free meat would be a 22 for small game probably

Black powder is over rated as a survival items. Just because they could make it in the past doesn't mean you will be able to make it in shtf. Sure charcoal is easy and you can make amonium nitrate from your piss but where are you getting sulfur from with out strong interregional trade links. Your better off stockpiling modern powders.

You are correct, sirs. Most versatile and reliable weapon there is, can throw anything from birdshot to slugs and if there is a condition where the gun fails anything else would have failed worse. Can do almost anything within its short range from top to bottom, can be loaded to meet the need.

Interestingly, blackpowder has the ability to stabilize and improve with proper storage, aging can be a good thing for it, while it is always going to be an issue with smokeless if enough time elapses. Stockpiling modern smokeless is a good strategy, far safer than volatile blackpowder, and its age won't be an issue for a few decades. Just a point to be made.

Also another favor of the shotgun is that cases can be improvised if need be. Not only can someone manage to try to make blackpowder, rudimentary shells can be made out of heavy duty wax paper. One can easily nigger rig some sort of projectile/s. The only thing is you are going to be short of primers putting you in the same boat eventually with the rest.

Make sure you have plenty of calories from other sources. Don't be a victim of rabbit starvation. If there is any advantage of bigger cartridges in these survival style scenarios is that they can more easily take bigger game that is more energy efficient in more situations. Keep in mind that in war lots of ammunition is great, but in hunting a handful of well placed rounds can feed a man better than a couple of bricks of 22 that can't reach out and touch and effectively kill a deer/moose/ect at range when you need it to.

If you are the type who packs a multi-tool to work and expects it to do everything you ask of it, a single barrel pump shotgun with stair-stepped sights is going to be your friend, as it will stand in as a slug gun well enough with sabot slugs and do bird and buck well enough to feed you. It won't do longer ranges like a rifle will, nor will your multi-tool do as well as a dedicated tool. But if it's all you have, you're still well equipped.

Jeff Cooper was a big advocate for a good, solid bolt action scout as a fighting rifle, and said it needed to be light enough at 7lbs and under including scope, accurate enough to hit a man size target at 300m, and powerful enough to reliably down a 1000lb target, and go bang every time. Some automatic rifles will pass this test, so they can also be included in these criteria, but not as scout rifles.

A favourite author of mine, Elmer Keith, advocates the revolver as the weapon for the innawoods situation, as there are no parts to lose, and they can be chambered in powerful enough cartridges like 44 magnum or 454 casull to down most things in north america. To him, all handguns are a weapon of opportunity, as you are more likely to have it on your person than a rifle or shotgun if you are busy with your hands and either some miscreant or predator decides to target you. I will throw in my own opinion and say that a 10mm handgun does not seem like a bad idea either.

Ideally, you should have one of each type to suit the job, but my personal pick would go to a six inch 44 magmun with good sights.

An AR-15 or an AK variant.

A pistol, Glock or HK.

Fuck fudd shit my friend, fuck it to hell.

I'm actually thinking about a simple break-action shotgun that can fire integrated cartridges, yet it can be turned into a muzzleloader, either a caplock or a flintlock. For this to work the ends of the chambers are threaded, and you can insert endcaps to turn it into a muzzle loader. The firing pins are integrated to they receiver; they are hollow and can accept percusssion caps, therefore they also work as the nipples. The hammers are classic flintlock hammers, if you thread them together they will hit the firing pins (or the percussion caps at them). To turn it into a flintlock form a caplock you just have to put flint into the hammers and attatch the pans to the receiver (somehow, I'm yet to figure out that part).

Yes, it's an exercise in futility, but I'm sure that there would be at least one autistic survivalist who'd think that this is the best invention ever.

>44 magmun

Wouldn't a .454 Casull or even .460 S&W revolver be better? You could fire various .45 cartridges from it too, therefore you could match the firepower to the threat. And more importantly, you could fire .410 shotshells from it, and that would give you access to a host of additional options. Also, I've seen adapters for 12 gauge shotguns that allowed them to fire various other cartridges, as the adapters also worked as the barrels. Maybe you could scale down that technology for .410 to fire .22 LR fror the revolver.

Black powder guns are only usable if you are facing as many hostiles as you have barrels (or can take down the game in same number of shots), pretty shit if you ask me. Plus black powder is crazy corrosive so you better have time to clean the gun after every shoot-out. Just use a normal 12 gauge and stockpile as much as you can. Buckshot, birdshot, slug, anything you can feed it.

>just one best for survival

There is no best.

1. high-ish caliber fullsize semiauto pistol. 10mm, .357m, .44m, anything comparable, as long as it's fireable / readily available. No need for muh dubstack zins, those are for antisoyboy calibers, like 9mm. Close range, stopping power, moderate use when hunting, best weight/volume to firepower ratio.

2. 12 gauge shotty, with at least 3+1 mag. More the better, as long as it's compact enough. Versatile, but big. Ammo is bulky. Can be used as a melee weapon.

3. Intermediate cartridge out of simple semiauto. I would pick some CZUB in 7.62x39 just because I'm a czfag. Medium to long range, power, moderate bulkiness. Don't use faggy cartridges though, go for simplest available which is still powerful enough. .223 rem might be a bottom line in stopping power.

4. Revolver in powerful caliber. The more power you have, the less ammo / drum you get, so it is a kind of worst option. There was that faggy taurus revolver pistol that was taking shotshells which can have bird/buck/micropenis slugs. It sucks because it does a shitty job of being a shotgun while only having 5 round drum, but it's still versatile and strong enough.

.22lr is a good idea in only one scenario: you don't have literally anything else. The biggest meat you can get is a piglet / a niglet, but in both cases you would need William Tell accuracy, as both have brains size of walnuts.

Capacity for survival is stupid. Your every shot counts, you are not spraying, but take calculated risks and fire no more than needed, and sometimes less.

Personally, I would take 1 if available, and 2-3 with equal priority depending on circumstances.

A good sperm cannon can get you and your seed pretty far in a SHTF situation.

Best all around hunting round is the .35 whelen.

Combat? Who the fuck knows, everyone has an opinion.
