Being a gentleman I've decided that I'd like to own some dueling pistols to settle disputes with the other men of class I drink scotch and play cards with. Unfortunately, I know next to nothing about them.

What are some good makers of dueling pistols? Should I buy a pair from the good old days or can I have a set custom made with my waifu engraved in them? How much money will I be spending if I go the custom route? Are we legally allowed to use them to settle disputes as long as all parties involved have agreed and there are witnesses?

You can't duel people to the death anymore in the US. Used to be a serious problem among American officers.

The only real criteria for duelling pistols is that they're both identical in make and model. If you insist on black powder, it's not too hard to make them yourself from a kit.

It reminds me of that old series on Discovery Channel where two teams had to build various machines (usually vehicles) from whatever they could find on a scrapyard, and then compete with those. I remeber that in one episode they had build cannons, although they were powered by air from what I remember. Now imagine a /k/ version of that game.

You can make blackpowder guns from black iron plumbing pipes. 1/2" pipe can fit a .495" (50 cal) lead ball with patch, and can be fired with up to 100 gr of powder. A pet dog I know of tests his pipe guns once with 150 gr to proof them. At 50gr I heard it only dented the cooking pot cover he was shooting at; at 100gr it penetrated. In theory, the black iron of the pipe is soft and should only bulge instead of shattering and exploding even if the metal failed, but that's only if you use black powder (pyrodex black powder substitute is fine and what said dog uses), because if you use smokeless you're going to blow yourself up, but that goes for virtually all muzzleloaders
