An initiative in WA is entering the ballot pretty soon that will reduce the states shitty gun laws to sub-california tier pretty soon. In order to purchase a semi-automatic rifle, read: not scary black assault rifle, you need to do the following
>be at least 21 years old
>The purchaser provides proof that they have completed a recognized firearm safety training program in the last five years including instruction on basic firearm safety, secure gun storage, the safety of children and firearms, suicide prevention, safe handling, and state and federal firearm law
>The dealer is notified in writing by the chief of police or sheriff in the jurisdiction of the purchaser's residence that the purchaser is eligible to own a firearm and that the application to purchase is approved. Under the measure, the chief of police or sheriff must use the national instant criminal background check system established under the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act and other databases and information centers to determine whether a person is eligible to possess a firearm
>the department of licensing could require the dealer to charge each purchaser or transferee a fee of not more than $25.00 to fund the state, mental health institutions, and local law enforcement for the cost of meeting their obligations under the measure
and for some reason all firearms purchases need to include this warning
>"CAUTION: The presence of a firearm in the home has been associated with an increased risk of death to self and others, including an increased risk of suicide, death during domestic violence incidents, and unintentional deaths to children and others."
This initiative would also include """""enhanced""""" background checks ie a full gun owner registry, and this bill would extend it to all firearm purchases.
>An applicant for the purchase of a firearm must sign and deliver an application to the dealer which includes the applicant's name, address, date of birth, race, gender, driver's license number or state ID number, a description of the firearm and manufacturer's number.
and even then the police department can just reject your background check for unspecific reasons.
It also includes the law that basically prohibits you from using your guns for self defense
>Under the measure, a person who leaves a firearm in a place where a prohibited person (someone who is prohibited from firearm possession under state or federal law) could potentially gain access to the firearm would be guilty of community endangerment, a class C felony
>Additionally, every place where firearms are sold would be required to display the following sign, in block letters (capitalized) and at least one inch in height: WARNING: YOU MAY FACE CRIMINAL PROSECUTION IF YOU STORE OR LEAVE AN UNSECURED FIREARM WHERE A PERSON WHO IS PROHIBITED FROM POSSESSING FIREARMS CAN AND DOES OBTAIN POSSESSION.
>Under the measure, violators would be guilty of a class 1 civil infraction and could be fined up to $250
Now some fun shit. During the petition part of this initiative the petition they passed around varied from area to area. When I was in Lewis county they told me the petition was to allow CCL holders on school grounds, which turns out wasn't their initiative but a different one entirely. Apparently people who were collecting signatures for 1635, an initiative that would outlaw a grocery tax, were also collecting signatures for 1639, which should be completely illegal. anectdotal, I know The petition they passed around didn't include the full text of the initiative on the back of the petition, and included fine print that was too small to actually read without a magnifying glass. They redrafted the initiative to make it vaguer after they got enough signatures to get on the ballot. The money tossed in to support this initiative is over 2.5 million, whereas opposition is 6 grand. And wouldn't you know, Bob Ferguson is involved.
I'd highly recommend reading through the actual paperwork yourself, it's pretty ridiculous, and far longer than I can copy paste.
